1. The Confession
It was just another evening after work. I logged in, and right at that moment, my best friend came online too. We started chatting, sharing the usual bits of our day, when she suddenly dropped a confession: she was in love with me. "I've wanted to tell you this for a while, but I was scared of what it might do to us," she began, her voice trembling slightly. "But I can't keep hiding it... I love you." For a moment, it felt like the world stopped. I could barely breathe. Her words pulled me back seven months in time, to a place I had buried deep.
2. The Past
Seven months ago, there was another girl in my life, someone I loved more than anything. But then I found out she was cheating on me. At first, I couldn't believe it-it felt unreal. But when I confronted her, it was as if she had transformed into someone I didn't recognize. Her words were distant, like they were coming from a stranger. The warmth between us was gone, replaced by an echo, a void that no amount of shouting could fill. Just like that, it was over. Now, seven months later, my best friend was asking for something more.
3. The Fear
I hesitated, thinking it over. I wasn't rejecting her because I didn't care- I did. But the truth is, I was terrified. You see, cheating may be the worst thing that can happen in a relationship, but it's not the only thing that can break it. Back in that past relationship, my mind was a battlefield. I'd overthink every little thing, even things that didn't really matter. Whenever she mentioned another guy-even casually-I'd feel a surge of jealousy, a feeling I couldn't shake off. I never told her to stop talking to them because I didn't want to cross boundaries or invade her privacy. But the jealousy... it gnawed at me, slowly consuming me from the inside out.
I told my best friend all of this. I explained that it wasn't about her; it was about me. I was scared-scared that if I entered another relationship, I'd fall into the same patterns. I'd overthink again, I'd become jealous again, and it would slowly eat away at me. It would distract me from my life, from everything I'm trying to build. "I can't fall in love again," I said quietly, almost to myself. "I'm afraid of what it'll do to me. I don't want to go through all that pain again. Even if I don't say anything, I know the jealousy will still be there, lurking beneath the surface. And I can't keep doing this to myself, knowing that it'll tear me apart."
4. The Hope
She was silent for a moment, her gaze searching mine, and for a second, I thought she might try to convince me otherwise. But instead, she nodded, her voice soft but steady. "You're not him," she said. "The person you were back then... that's not who you are now. But I understand. I'll wait." Her words hit me harder than anything else. I wanted to believe her. I wanted to trust in the possibility that things could be different this time. But the weight of the past held me down like chains. I wasn't ready to risk it all again. Not yet. Maybe not ever.
"I wish I could be the person you deserve," I whispered. "But I'm not. Not right now." There was a long pause. I expected her to walk away, to be hurt, to leave me standing in the wreckage of my own fears. But instead, she smiled a small, sad smile. "I'll be here, whether you're ready or not." And just like that, she was gone, leaving me alone in the quiet of my thoughts, with the fear still lingering... but maybe, just maybe, a sliver of hope too.
