I’m Mariah. To be honest, my life used to be pretty normal — exactly the kind of thing people wish for. Instinct kicked in, loud and furious. The next moment we were rolling on the cold ground, dusk closing in, my voice breaking under the sound of its guttural growls.

It all happened so fast. Claws tore into me. Fire ripped across my skin. I fought back because what else was left? I only had my family. The Wendigo didn’t care. It buried its teeth in me, and the sound I made barely felt human. I felt something inside snap. Colors bled from the world, my grip on myself slipping away piece by piece.

When I opened my eyes again, I hardly knew myself. The change was ugly, sure, but power shimmered through me. I felt the Wendigo in my bones now, a hunger clawing at whatever was left of my soul. Not totally human, not really a monster—just caught in between. And that voice inside me? It wasn’t quiet. It started whispering. It showed me how to move through shadows, how to survive, how to get revenge.

Days faded into weeks. I trained, sharpening the strange new senses—the Wendigo instinct lit everything up, every noise sharper, every scent sharper still. I could feel her out there, the Wendigo queen, always lingering in the back of my mind, cold and heavy as a thundercloud. I wanted to find her. Not just for my family anymore. This was personal. Her darkness had poisoned me straight to the core.

Then, under a huge swollen moon, I spotted an old man step from the dark. His clothes were torn, but his gaze was fierce and old as the dirt. He held out a knife. Blue flames shimmered along the blade, so bright it made my eyes water.

He got straight to it. “You have to take my place,” he said, his words ringing through the woods. “The supernatural world’s falling to pieces. The Wendigo queen can’t win.”

I froze, heart hammering in my ears. The weight of that choice was real, almost crushing. “What am I supposed to do?” I asked, my voice barely steady while everything inside twisted and spun.

He answered, “Accept it. Let your past burn—you can’t hang onto both lives. You’re a fighter now.”

So I took the knife. Power surged through me, wild and hungry. I went home—to the place where I used to belong, where my laughter and love lived. And I set the whole thing on fire. Flames crawled up the house, devouring every memory, leaving only ash. I watched it all fall. In that moment, something in me snapped free. I stopped pretending I could ever be normal again.

After that, I changed. I started hunting the supernatural, a Warrior with a Wendigo’s blood, chasing her—always her. Every battle dragged me closer to the queen. The fire inside me burned sharp with vengeance. I tracked her through the woods, every footstep heavy with promise. She’d taken everything. I wouldn’t rest until I tasted revenge.

Night after night, I ran through shadows and half-truths, always chasing, never catching. Her presence stuck to me, cold, always close. The old grief faded away, and something sharper took its place. I hunted harder. That blue-flame knife led the way.

Time spun out, months sliding by. I sank into this world of monsters, hunted until I hardly remembered the old me. But I wasn’t alone. I found others—hunters broken and re-shaped by their own losses, refusing to let the dark win. We joined up. Shared stories, compared scars, built a new kind of family out of what was left. Together, we hunted. Vengeance wasn’t just mine—it belonged to all of us.

But always, for me, it circled back to her. The Wendigo queen. I could feel her worry, panic as I drew closer. Every battle, every wound, every fresh hunt got me nearer. Through all of it, I felt my family—my husband, my child—right beside me, their voices in the back of my mind, telling me not to stop.

Then came the night I’d waited for. I faced her—the Wendigo queen. Her eyes burned with old hate and something ancient. The fight was brutal. The forest shook, shadows danced, blows landing like thunder. I gripped the blue knife and hacked away at the darkness holding her together.

Right then, something inside shifted. It wasn’t just about payback anymore. It was about piecing myself back together—making myself something more than what I’d lost. Every time I struck, I could almost feel my family’s love holding me up. When she finally fell, her scream ripping the night apart, I knew my story wasn’t over. Far from it. My name’s Mariah. I’m half-human, half-Wendigo, and I finally figured out what I am.

Now, I’m a story whispered about by other hunters. I left the past in those ashes, and found strength in what came after. I fight for the people who can’t fight back. The queen was just the beginning. Loss rebuilt me, and now I keep going, using that darkness to make sure nobody else loses what I lost. My hunt isn’t finished. Not even close.
