The woods were old—older than the houses that pressed at their edges, older even than the legends that lingered in the hush between the trees. Tonight, the moon rose swollen and red, drenching the forest in a bloody glow. Shadows shifted, and the air itself tasted of iron and secrets. It was a night for monsters, and for lovers.

Abel moved through the darkness like a ghost, his bare feet silent on the moss and leaf mold. He wasn’t breathing hard, though he’d run all the way from Olivia’s cottage, heart hammering against ribs that hadn’t felt a true pulse in centuries. His senses were sharp as razors—he could hear every mouse beneath the bracken, every shiver in the canopy. But it was Olivia’s despair that drew him forward, a thread of pain singing in his veins.

He remembered her laughter, the warmth of her hands in his, the way she’d kissed him beneath the twisted branches of the old willow. Abel had lived through plagues, through wars, through endless nights of starvation and blood. But nothing—not even the slow burning of sunlight—had hurt as much as seeing Olivia’s face twisted in terror, her eyes wild as Caspar dragged her away.

Caspar. Abel’s brother in damnation, bound to him by the blood they’d shared and the darkness that filled them both. They’d loved together, fought together, starved together. But tonight Caspar had crossed a line that could never be uncrossed.

Abel found the clearing where it had happened, the grass still pressed down, the earth torn by Olivia’s heels. The scent of her magic was sharp in the air—sage and rosemary, bitter wormwood and sweet myrrh. She’d fought, but Caspar was older, hungrier, and his jealousy had been a living thing, gnawing at the edges of his sanity.

The moon burned brighter, fat and low, painting the world in shades of scarlet. Abel knelt and pressed his hand to the earth, searching for her. All he found was pain.

A branch snapped behind him. Abel’s head whipped up, lips curling back from his fangs.

Caspar stood at the edge of the clearing, black eyes glittering. “You’re too late, brother,” he whispered. “She belongs to the forest now.”

Abel’s voice was a growl. “What have you done?”

Caspar smiled, lips bloody. “I gave her a new shape. A new hunger. She wanted power, didn’t she? Now she has it.”

Abel lunged, but Caspar vanished, melting into the shadows like smoke. Abel’s scream split the night—a sound that was half agony, half promise.

I will find you, Olivia. I will save you, or die trying.

The next night, Abel traced Olivia’s trail through the forest, her scent dissolving into something colder, hungrier. The stories of the wendigo were old, older than even Abel—tales of hunger that could never be sated, of souls twisted by magic and starvation. The transformation would be slow at first—a fever, a gnawing emptiness, a thirst that no water could quench.

He found blood on the snow. Not much—a smear, a droplet. Abel pressed his lips to it, tasting her magic, her fear.

A raven cawed overhead, black wings flashing in the moonlight. Abel glanced up, eyes narrowing. The old ones said the wendigo king wore a ring of ice, cold as the grave, stolen from the heart of a glacier. Only that ring could reverse the curse, if it was placed on the victim’s finger before their heart was lost to hunger.

The ring was deep in the forest, in the heart of the king’s domain. And between Abel and salvation lay the skinwalkers’ sacred lands.

He set his jaw. He had no choice.

The air grew colder as Abel pressed forward, every step a war against the ancient protections woven into the land. The skinwalkers were guardians and tricksters—spirits who wore the skins of wolves and owls, watching from the shadows.

Abel heard the rustling first, the whisper of fur on bark. Then a voice, high and mocking: “Vampire, what do you seek in our woods?”

A woman stood before him, her eyes like burning coals, her hair tangled with feathers and bones. Her smile was all teeth.

Abel bowed his head. “I seek only to save the woman I love. Please—let me pass.”

The skinwalker laughed. “Love? Monsters know nothing of love. Only hunger.”

Abel met her gaze, unflinching. “Then let me prove you wrong.”

The skinwalker’s grin faded. “If you pass, you must give something up—something precious.”

Abel thought of Olivia, of the laughter they’d shared, of the memories that kept his heart beating in the darkness. He reached into his coat and drew out a silver locket—a relic from his human life, the last photograph of his family, stolen from a world that had forgotten him.

He handed it over.

The skinwalker turned it over in her hands, eyes narrowing. “You may pass, vampire. But beware: the forest hungers. And so do you.”

Abel nodded, and pressed onward.

The forest pressed in with every step, trees warping into twisted, skeletal shapes beneath the blood moon. The wind howled like a grieving widow, carrying with it scraps of laughter and screams that might have belonged to the living or the damned. Abel kept moving, mind fixed on Olivia.

He saw her in every shadow—her eyes, once warm, now rimmed with frost; her voice, once honeyed, now sharp as broken glass. The curse was working fast. He could sense her hunger, vast as the sea, clawing at her insides.

A shape darted between the trees. Abel froze, fangs bared, but it was only a deer—emaciated, eyes black with terror. It ran, and Abel felt a flicker of kinship. They were both prey in these woods.

He pressed forward, mouth dry with dread. The deeper he went, the more the air felt wrong—thick, cold, tasting faintly of rot. The moon above seemed to pulse, a heart beating in the sky.

Then he heard her.

A ragged sob, half-human, half-something else. Abel followed the sound until he found Olivia crouched by a stream, her hands stained red. Her hair was tangled with leaves, her dress torn, her eyes wild and unseeing.

“Olivia,” he whispered, afraid the name itself might scare her away.

She looked up, her face streaked with blood. For a moment, something human flickered in her gaze. “Abel?” Her voice was hoarse, hungry.

He knelt before her, careful not to move too fast. “I’m here, my love. I’m here.”

She pressed her hands to her temples, fingers digging into her skull. “It’s so loud, Abel. The hunger—make it stop, please—”

He touched her cheek, feeling the cold seep into his bones. “Hold on. I’ll save you. I swear it.”

A snarl ripped from her throat, and she lunged away, vanishing into the trees. Abel’s heart broke anew. He rose, fists clenched. There was no time left.

The trees thinned, giving way to a clearing bathed in blue-white light. Frost rimed every branch; the air was glacial, burning Abel’s lungs. At the center stood a throne of ice, jagged and cruel.

Upon it sat the wendigo king.

He was enormous, draped in furs and bones, crowned with antlers wreathed in mist. His eyes burned like dying stars. Around his neck hung a chain, and at its center gleamed the ice ring—clear as crystal, cold as eternity.

“You seek what is not yours, vampire,” the king rumbled. His voice shook the ground, shards of ice spiraling from his lips.

Abel stood tall, though his body screamed to run. “She is mine. Her fate is not yours to decide.”

The wendigo king laughed, a sound like glaciers grinding. “Love is weakness. Only hunger endures.”

Abel shook his head. “You’re wrong.”

He surged forward, faster than thought. The king rose, claws sweeping—Abel dodged, feeling the wind of death pass inches from his face. He struck, fangs bared, but the king’s hide was like stone. The ring glimmered, close now, so close.

They battled ancient strength against desperate love. Abel’s body broke and healed, broke and healed, but he would not stop. Not while Olivia needed him.

With a final cry, he tore the chain from the king’s throat, the ice ring burning his flesh. The king howled, but Abel ran, crashing into the forest, ring clutched to his chest.

He found her where the moonlight pooled thickest, her form half-human, half-nightmare. She turned to him, hunger warring with memory in her eyes.

“Olivia,” he gasped, holding out the ring. “Take it. Remember who you are.”

She recoiled, claws raised, but Abel fell to his knees, baring his throat. “If you must feed, feed. But I will not leave you to this.”

For a heartbeat, time stilled. Then, with a sob, Olivia reached for the ring. The moment it touched her finger, the curse shattered—cold light exploding around them.

Her screams were agony, but Abel held her, whispering love, promising forever.

When the light faded, Olivia collapsed in his arms, human once more. Abel held her, silent tears streaming down his cheeks.

Behind them, the forest sighed. The blood moon slipped behind a cloud, and the night became just night again.

They walked from the forest together, battered but alive. The hunger was gone, but the memory remained—a scar neither would ever truly lose.

Olivia pressed her hand into Abel’s. “You came for me,” she whispered.

“Always,” he said, and the first light of morning painted the world gold.

Together, they vanished into the brightening day, the darkness behind them, the future uncertain—but theirs.
