Stories cling to Whitefall like frost clings to windowpanes. They say the forests are haunted—not by the dead, but by the cursed. They say to never stray after dark, for the wendigos roam then, their hunger an endless ache, their eyes like chips of blue ice. The old folk say there are other things, too. Wolves that walk as men, teeth glinting in the silver light, born of the wilderness, bound by loyalty and blood.

I grew up on these tales, tucked beneath patchwork quilts, my sisters on either side of me. We listened to the wind battering the cabin walls and wondered—was it truly the wind? Or something older, hungrier, stalking the night?

I never believed I would become the monster in those stories. But stories in Whitefall have a way of coming true.

Chapter One: Shadows in the Snow

My name is Ash. I am twenty-two, and I am a werewolf.

I live on the outskirts of Whitefall in a cabin built by my grandfather, a man with secrets buried as deep as the town’s frozen lakes. I shift, bones cracking as I become Ash again. My breath hitches as I step toward her.

“Did anyone see you?” I whisper.

She shakes her head, hair tumbling over her shoulders. “No one cares what I do—except you.”

I want to hold her, to shield her from the cold and the hunger that has haunted her since she was cursed. But even now I see the wendigo in her—the way her fingers tremble, the way her eyes sometimes flicker with an ancient, gnawing need.

“I shouldn’t have come,” she says, voice thick with regret.

I reach for her hand, my own rough and scarred. “I don’t care what you are. I love you.”

She flinches, as if the words are a wound. “You shouldn’t.”

The wind sighs through the trees, carrying with it a memory of blood and snow.

“I know your curse,” I say. “But I also know it can be broken. If you have not fed—if your heart can thaw—”

She looks at me, desperate. “Do you really believe that, Ash?”

The battle is chaos—blood on snow, snarls and shrieks, the air thick with the copper stench of violence. I fight with everything I have, claws raking, teeth sinking into icy flesh. Sable and Skye fight at my side, back to back, our pack a whirlwind of rage.

Wendigos fall, shrieking, their bodies crumbling to ice and dust. Wolves die too—friends, family, their blood staining the snow black.

In the heart of the storm, I see Malachai—the wendigo leader, tall and skeletal, his eyes burning like hellfire. He points at Zorynth, who cowers inside the shattered doorway.

“She is ours!” he screams, voice like breaking glass.

“She is mine!” I roar back, lunging at him.

We clash, strength against ancient hunger, the world shrinking to pain and fury and love. I drive him back, but he is old, powerful, nearly unstoppable. Around us, the battle rages—wolves and wendigos tearing, howling, dying.

At last, Malachai falters, his body smoking, ice cracking along his arms. He retreats, dragging his wounded kin with him. The surviving wendigos melt into the forest, leaving only silence and ruin behind.

I stagger to the door, blood pouring from a dozen wounds. Zorynth runs to me, sobbing, hands pressed to my chest.

“You’re alive,” she weeps. “You’re alive.”

I kiss her, tasting salt and blood and hope.

“You’re safe,” I promise. “As long as I breathe, you’re safe.”

But even as I say it, I know the war is not over. Malachai’s words echo in the night:

We will return. She will never be yours.

Chapter Five: Hearts Aflame in the Frozen Wild

She throws back her head and howls. The sound splits the night, triumphant and defiant. I join her, my sisters too, our voices mingling, echoing through the frozen trees.

We are packed. We are family. We are love that survives the curse, the war, the winter.

But as the echoes fade, I see eyes watching from the forest’s edge—cold, hateful, hungry. The wendigos are not finished. The war is not over.

I look at Zorynth, her new form radiant in the moonlight, and I know: whatever comes, we will face it together.
