The eviction notice didn’t knock. It just appeared one morning like bad weather taped to the door. Dante watched his mother peel it off slow, like it might bite her. She didn’t cry. She just folded it once, twice, tucked it into her purse, and said, “Pack what matters, baby.”

What mattered turned out to be two duffel bags, a shoebox of photos, and a quiet kind of hope that didn’t take up space but weighed a ton.

Uncle Ron’s place smelled like coffee, incense, and something old that had stories to tell.

“You got taller,” Uncle Ron said, pulling Dante into a hug that felt like a sturdy bridge. “Or maybe I just got shorter.”

Cliff appeared behind him, smiling with a softness that made the room feel warmer. “He got taller,” Cliff said. “And probably hungrier. Come on in.”

Dante stepped inside like he was entering a different rhythm. There were records everywhere. Stacked, leaned, half-slid out of sleeves like they were mid-conversation. A saxophone sat on a stand in the corner, gleaming under a sliver of afternoon light. Dante noticed it right away.

Uncle Ron noticed that he noticed.

“You ever heard one up close?” Ron asked.

Dante shook his head.

Ron grinned. “You will.”

That first night, Dante couldn’t sleep. The couch was soft, but unfamiliar. The city hummed outside, a distant choir of sirens and laughter and somebody arguing over nothing. He turned his head toward the corner. The saxophone stood there like it knew something he didn’t. By morning, Dante had already decided.

“Hold it like this,” Uncle Ron said, adjusting Dante’s fingers with patience that didn’t rush. “Don’t fight it. Let it sit with you.”

Dante brought the mouthpiece to his lips. Blew.

It came out wrong. A squeak that startled even the walls.

Cliff laughed from the kitchen. “Sound like a duck stepped on a Lego.”

Dante lowered the horn, embarrassed.

Uncle Ron didn’t laugh. “That right there? That’s your first step. Every great sound starts ugly. Don’t let nobody tell you different.”

Dante tried again.

Still ugly.

But less surprised.

Days found a rhythm. Morning light. Breakfast. Practice. Afternoon. Records spinning. Cliff moving through the house like a DJ of memories.

“You need to hear this,” Cliff would say, pulling a record from its sleeve like it was sacred text.

He’d drop the needle and let the room fill up with sound.

“That’s Louis Armstrong,” Cliff said one afternoon. “Listen to how he smiles through the horn.”

Another day: “That’s John Coltrane. He doesn’t just play. He searches.”

And then: “Charlie Parker. Fast like a thought you can’t quite catch.”

Sometimes Cliff would switch it up. A guitar would cry instead of a horn.

“That’s B.B. King,” he’d say. “He bends notes like they got feelings.”

Dante would sit there, quiet, letting it all wash over him.

Practice got louder. Then softer. Then better. The squeaks turned into notes. The notes into something that almost made sense. Dante’s fingers began to remember things before his mind did.

One evening, Uncle Ron leaned against the wall, arms crossed, listening. Dante played a phrase. Stumbled. Found it again. Played it again. This time it stayed.

Uncle Ron nodded slow. “There it is.”

“What?” Dante asked, lowering the sax.

“You,” Ron said. “That’s you starting to show up.”

But some nights, the music didn’t come. Some nights, Dante thought about the apartment. His room. The way the light hit his window at sunset. The way his mom would hum when she thought nobody was listening. He missed it like a missing tooth, always aware.

One night, he tried to play and nothing came out right. Everything sounded off. Wrong. Like the horn was arguing with him.

“I can’t do this,” Dante said, setting the sax down harder than he meant to.

Weeks later, Cliff came home with a grin that meant trouble.

“There’s a spot down on 9th,” he said. “Little place. Open mic night. They let anybody play.”

Dante froze. “Anybody?”

Cliff nodded. “Even lil blues boys.”

“I’m not ready,” Dante said.

Uncle Ron raised an eyebrow. “Ready for what? Approval? Or the truth?”

Dante swallowed.

The club was dim, lit like a secret. People talked in low voices, glasses clinking like tiny percussion. The stage was small. Just enough space for a mic, a stool, and a dream trying to be heard. Dante’s hands felt heavier than usual.

“You ain’t gotta be nobody but yourself,” Uncle Ron said, squeezing his shoulder. “That’s more than enough.”

Cliff added, “And if you mess up, we’ll blame the acoustics.”

Dante laughed despite himself.

When they called his name, it echoed louder than it should’ve. He stepped onto the stage. The room didn’t quiet all the way, but it shifted. Curious.

Dante lifted the sax. Closed his eyes. And for a second, everything rushed in. The eviction notice. His mom’s tired smile. The couch. The records. Uncle Ron’s steady patience. Cliff’s joyful lessons. All of it. He took a breath. Played.

The first note didn’t ask permission. It just existed. Then another. Then a phrase that bent, stretched, found its footing. It wasn’t perfect. But it didn’t need to be. It told the truth.

Somewhere in the middle, Dante forgot to be scared. He just played. And the room… listened.

When he finished, there was a pause. The kind that holds its breath. Then applause. Not loud like fireworks. But real. Like rain finally hitting dry ground. Dante looked out. Uncle Ron stood there, proud in a quiet way. Cliff clapped like he’d been waiting for this moment all his life. And in the back, Dante’s mom wiped her eyes, smiling like something had been returned to her.

Later that night, back at the apartment, Dante placed the sax on its stand. It didn’t look mysterious anymore. It looked like home.

“You did good,” Uncle Ron said.

Dante nodded. “I just… played what I felt.”

Ron smiled. “That’s all the greats ever did.”

Cliff added, “Welcome to the conversation.”

Dante glanced at the records. At the horn. At the space he now filled differently. He wasn’t just listening anymore. He was answering.

And somewhere between loss and music, between an eviction notice on a door and a note in the air, Dante found something that couldn’t be taken from him.

A sound.
