The Ladies of Liberty

In 1924 Philadelphia, Ella Carpenter is a factory worker with grease-stained hands and a dream the world refuses to take seriously. Denied the chance to play baseball simply because she is a woman—and a Black woman at that—Ella refuses to accept the limits placed on her. Instead, she creates her own. With the help of a reluctant former Negro Leagues player and a fearless group of working-class women—maids, teachers, laborers, and dreamers—Ella forms the Philadelphia Liberty Belles, an all-women’s baseball team determined to prove they belong on the field. But chasing a dream comes at a cost. As the Liberty Belles rise, they face ridicule, resistance, and real consequences that threaten their jobs, their reputations, and their futures.
