Rami sat cross-legged on the curb, just outside a noodle stall on Thappraya Road. The metal bowl of kuay teow sat half-eaten in front of him, but he wasn’t hungry anymore. He kept rolling three five-baht coins between his fingers, absentmindedly—click, shift, roll, click.

Rami stared down at the coins in his hand like they were mocking him. Three five-baht pieces—his last real money. He'd gone all-in on some Solana shitcoin just two weeks ago. It pumped hard—10,000%, briefly. He could’ve walked away with more than he’d made in five years of full-time work. But he held. Greedy, stupid, sure it had more room to run. Then came the rug pull. Liquidity vanished in minutes. Now even his pitiful leftovers were stuck—no volume, no buyers, just a dead chart and a broken DEX.

The air was thick and slow, like it always was at that hour—late morning, just before the sun committed to baking the city flat.

"You handle those coins like an accountant," came a voice from behind.

Rami looked up. The man was older, Thai, but not quite local-looking. Mid-fifties, lean, dressed in linen like he didn’t sweat. Calm in the way only people who didn’t need anything could be.

“Sorry?” Rami asked.

“I said, you move those coins like a man used to spreadsheets and silent offices.” The man squatted beside him, not asking for permission. “Accounting, yes?”

Rami narrowed his eyes. “I haven’t done accounting in years.”

“But you are one,” the man said, simply. “Certified, trained, skilled. Bored of it, maybe. But it’s still there.”

Rami felt a flicker of irritation. “Sorry, who are you?”

“Someone who notices things,” he said, smiling just a little. “My name is Pan.”

Rami didn’t answer. He looked back at his soup and then at the coins.

“I know a place,” Pan continued, “down in Jomtien. Big restaurant. Good food, sloppy books. They’ll be audited soon.”

Rami laughed dryly. “How the hell would you know that?”

Pan tilted his head. “Because I listen. You should try it.”

“I don’t have a visa to work. You want me to get deported?”

“You won’t be working,” Pan said. “You’ll be saving someone’s ass. Quietly.”

He reached into his pocket and slid a torn napkin across the sidewalk. A name. An address.

“Show up this afternoon. Ask for the manager. Offer help. Don’t talk too much. Just tell him his ledgers are a mess and that you can fix them. Cash and board. He will accept your help.”

Rami stared at the napkin.

“What’s in it for you?” he asked.

Pan stood. “Less noise in the world.”

And with that, he was gone—folded back into the city like he’d never been there.

Rami went.

The restaurant was huge—three floors, heavy wooden beams, packed every night with tourists and middle-class locals. He found the manager chain-smoking behind the kitchen, barking at a supplier over the phone.

When Rami introduced himself, the man looked him over once, then again.

“Uhhhh....well, how can I say this. I hear you’re about to get audited,” Rami said. “Your books aren’t clean. But....I can help.”

The manager laughed. “Well...you talk so strongly to me. And who are you?”

“I’m an accountant,” Rami said flatly. “Qualified. I’m not here to bust you. I’m here to keep your ass out of jail.”

That got the man’s attention.

“I’ll do it for a little cash,” Rami said. “And a room. Just until it’s done.”

Rami remembered Pan's flippant last remark: He will accept your help.

And he did.

The records were a mess—boxes of half-wet receipts, Excel sheets with no dates, random entries in Thai and English mixed together. Rami took one look and felt his old reflexes kick in.

He worked late. Alone. Some days he didn’t sleep. He created a full-year report, matched inventory to revenue, and identified eight red flags the owner didn’t even know existed.

On the fifth day, two men from the Revenue Department showed up. Plainclothes. Polite but serious.

Rami was nowhere near the meeting. He had handed everything over to the manager the night before—two folders and a USB drive. He had walked the man through the spreadsheet logic, flagged every risky area, and even rehearsed answers to common audit questions.

It went smoothly.

After the officials left, the manager came out back where Rami sat smoking.

He looked long and hard at Rami, no expression.

Eventually: “Thank you.”

Rami nodded.

Another awkward, long pause.

“You want to do this officially?” the manager asked. “I have fifteen restaurants—Chonburi, Rayong. From here to Sattahip. I’ll get you a work visa. A condo in Jomtien. Rent-free.”

Rami blinked. The smoke from his cigarette drifted sideways, like it couldn’t believe it either.

“You serious?”

The man nodded. “You’re the first farang I’ve met who did more work than talk.”

That night Rami stood on the condo balcony, watching Pattaya hum like a neon mosquito — persistent, high on sugar, impossible to swat. Signs bled into rainy-season puddles, scooters backfired like popcorn, and someone below was either laughing or sobbing into a Singha. The city was still its usual self: corrupt, loud, humid, and somehow thriving on bad decisions. He felt like an outlier in all this chaos — legal job, stable income, no existential spirals this week. He thought of Pan. Less noise in the world? Rami could say there was less noise in his head. And for that, he thanked the mysterious man who helped him.
