The most compelling thread here is David’s unreliable certainty: first he remembers Steve standing safely at the roadside, then he spends months turning a dream-date into destiny, only to discover that Steve died at the crossing without him. That escalation is sharply controlled, and the final return to the original memory gives the story a satisfying echo. I was less convinced by how quickly the Colin Kerr and Ben Macklin material becomes the explanation-shaped centre of the story. Colin’s silence, his sudden statement that “Ben Macklin is dead,” and the timing of Macklin’s death are wonderfully eerie, but because the connection remains almost entirely ungrounded, the later chapters sometimes felt like they were promising a revelation rather than deepening the uncertainty. The ambiguity works best when it stays attached to David’s guilt and distorted perception. Even so, the story’s strongest achievement is making coincidence feel morally charged: David is spared by the murder he intended to commit, yet the final memory suggests he may have been part of something stranger all along.

The assembly scene with Martin’s hat is devastating—the school’s casual cruelty feels more frightening than any overt violence. That final sense of the institution simply absorbing everything lingers.
