The town lay somewhere in East Anglia, flat enough to make weather feel personal. September had arrived without ceremony, bringing with it a thin, bureaucratic cold that seeped through blazers and brick alike. The sky hung low and undecided. Buses hissed along damp roads. Fields beyond the estates were already losing interest in summer. It was 1985, though nothing in the town felt especially modern: the buildings were tired, the routines inherited, the future vague. This was the kind of place where things happened slowly, and then all at once, and where no one could quite say afterward who had been in charge. At the edge of the town, squatting behind railings and tarmac, stood the school.

“—put him in a coma. Actual coma.”

“Coma, yeah. They said his eyes are open but the brain’s not home.”

“No one’s saying who did it?”

“They’re saying it’s Peter Shaw.”

“No—Stephen’s brother?”

“Yeah. Still in school, isn’t he.”

“Jesus.”

“Didn’t even get suspended.”

The two boys stood in the corridor like minor royals at a funeral, reverent but animated by the gossip, which was currency here—more valuable than meal tokens or merit stickers. Just outside the door to Class 3-1, a grey rectangle with a fire escape plan taped to it like a confession. The corridor smelt of wet wool, antiseptic, and the formaldehyde of institutionalised adolescence.

Inside, Ben Norris was being introduced to his future in the time-honoured way: humiliation-by-consensus.

He had been at the school for a matter of days, but he might as well have crawled in through the sewer. There was something about him—his posture, perhaps, or his anxious decorum—that made his presence a kind of affront. He was acne in uniform. A sore in the middle of a lesson plan. The kind of boy who made teachers sigh internally when hands were raised.

A ruler clicked across a desk. A pencil case unzipped with malice. Laughter, always ten decibels too loud, seemed to follow him like a tune only others could hear.

And then came the moment.

A knock at the door. A boy with a note. A whisper between carrier and teacher. The teacher, Mr. Webb, looked up with his face arranged in that classic mixture of exhaustion and authority.

“Ben Norris?” he said, in a tone of bureaucratic pity. “Gather your things. You're moving to Class 3-3. Now.”

There was a hush. The kind of hush that precedes ritual humiliation, like a bell before a hanging. Ben’s chair scraped the floor with the long, slow moan of the condemned.

The door to Class 3-3 was already open, as if expecting him. The room was noisier, somehow warmer—like a predator’s breath. Laughter slid across the surface of the air as he stepped in.

“New meat,” someone said.

“Look at his face.”

Ben stood in the doorway, clutching his bag like a hostage negotiator clutches a vest.

“Ah,” the teacher said, without looking up. “There’s a desk at the back. By the window.”

The laugh was gentle, almost tender. An intake of breath before a slap.

Ben walked.

He’d barely made it three paces before a voice cracked the air.

“Oi—ugly. Crawl here.”

Stephen Shaw.

Front row. Uniform in disarray. The posture of someone who believes in pain as pedagogy.

Ben hesitated.

“I said—on your hands and knees. Crawl here.”

A girl giggled, sugar-sweet.

“Do it,” she said, “or he’ll kick your fucking head in.”

The words had weight only because of how lightly they were delivered. Like a joke in a murder note.

And Ben, whose legs had been fluent a moment before, found himself sinking. He knew Stephen Shaw's reputation. Palms to linoleum. Knees to earth. And then—motion.

He crawled.

The class roared. They clapped. It was pantomime and sacrifice and nativity all in one. The new boy, playing the beast.

At the front, Stephen didn’t smile.

He waited.

Ben reached him.

“Shut up,” Stephen said. The room obeyed.

Ben, on all fours, glanced at the teacher.

Still flicking through a textbook, feigning ignorance with the skill of a man who'd taught long enough to know that seeing too much invites paperwork.

Stephen leaned in.

“Don’t look at him,” he said, voice thick with disdain. “He’s fucking useless to you. I run this room.”

Ben stared at the floor.

“I got you moved here,” Stephen said, softly, like someone announcing a chess move three turns ago. “This is my form. My house. My rules.”

He paused.

“I can’t decide whether to kick you straight into the ICU or let the mouse run for a bit.”

A smile now. Not kind. Just tired.

“My brother’s done enough damage lately, I suppose. You lucky rodent.”

Then, with the flat indifference of a butcher rejecting a cut:

“Now fuck off out of my sight.”

Ben stood, legs shaking not with fear but with sheer biological recoil. He returned to his desk like a man retreating from a battlefield he hadn't chosen.

And the class? They watched. Not with pity, not even with amusement anymore.

With recognition.

Because they knew what had just happened.

Ben Norris had entered Class 3-3.

And Class 3-3 had entered him.

Because they knew what had just happened.

Ben Norris had entered Class 3-3.

And Class 3-3 had entered him.

2e:T1086,

The room knew before anyone else did.

Rooms like this always do. They develop a kind of peripheral awareness—an architectural nervous system tuned to humiliation, mutiny, failed authority. Class 5-1 had the posture of something pretending to be inert. Desks aligned like teeth in a skull. Windows fogged with old breath. The air faintly sweet, faintly scorched.

Into this stepped a man carrying certainty.

He brought it with him the way others bring cologne or bad news. Certainty in the shoulders, in the angle of the chin, in the way the bag hit the desk with a sound that said listen. His voice arrived first, followed by the words.

“I’m Mr. Faulkner,” he said, voice calibrated for projection. “I know this school’s got a reputation.”

The word reputation moved through the room, stirring nothing.

“So do I. I’m ex-army. I’ve seen things no man should see. I don’t have time for unruliness in a classroom.”

Silence received this politely.

“But,” he added, with a faint, hopeful adjustment, “first impressions are good.”

A hand rose. A gesture rehearsed somewhere between irony and theatre.

“Sir. Just wanted to welcome you to the school.”

Applause followed. Light, correct, almost tender. It had the quality of a courtesy extended to someone about to miss a step.

Faulkner smiled. He nodded. He began.

The new teacher had been talking for the better part of fifteen minutes, and had relaxed into the lesson, into the muscle memory of instruction, trusting the rows behind him with his spine. He turned to the board and began copying out a quotation—something long, Victorian, piously doomed—his handwriting stretching, line after careful line. The room held. Chairs didn’t scrape. No one spoke. It was almost convincing.

The breath came halfway through the quote.

Hot. Close. Wrong.

Then smoke—exhaled deliberately, directly across the nape of his neck, close enough that he felt it settle there, warm and oily.

Faulkner spun round.

Peter Shaw stood there, grinning faintly, cigarette still burning, having already claimed the moment. The smoke hung between them like a shared secret.

The classroom erupted—not gradually, not politely, but all at once. Laughter broke rank, surged forward, collided with itself. Desks rattled. Someone clapped. Someone howled. The room finally exhaled what it had been holding since the bell.

What followed wasn’t a confrontation so much as an erosion. Peter remained standing too close for comfort, the cigarette still live, still productive, and said things without ceremony—remarks pitched as jokes, but weighted like inventory. Something about spare beds. Something about continuity of care. The suggestion that the hospital ward might appreciate the company, that there was precedent for these things, that occupancy was apparently flexible. The laughter adjusted its pitch accordingly, sharpened, learned what kind of day it was allowed to be.

Faulkner tried to recover ground by invoking procedure. He spoke in the tones of escalation, of recourse, of offices that were meant to exist for precisely this sort of moment. He left the room with urgency, the way men do when they believe proximity to authority will solve a problem of physics. The door swung behind him with a confidence that had not yet learned doubt.

Time behaved strangely in his absence. The room did not deteriorate; it settled. The cigarette shortened. The air redistributed itself. The class absorbed the interruption as proof of concept rather than anomaly.

Faulkner returned alone.

Whatever he had attempted—knocking, calling, waiting—had failed to summon anything resembling intervention. The headmaster remained theoretical, sealed somewhere above or behind or nowhere at all. Authority, it turned out, was not absent so much as unwilling to be made visible.

Faulkner gathered his things with care, as if sudden movement might provoke further demonstration. There was no speech. No ultimatum. Just the quiet logistics of departure.

By lunchtime, his name was already being used in the past tense.

2f:T1164,

The gymnasium was a coffin turned sideways.

Brick walls the colour of unbrushed teeth. Light bars humming overhead like mechanical tinnitus. Rows upon rows of students—cross-legged, blank-faced, already half-anaesthetised by routine and polyester.

The floor had a slight give to it, like something underneath was still breathing.

Ben Norris sat among the rest, knees tucked, back straight, the way you’re supposed to when you don’t want to be noticed. The gym smelt of boiled shoe leather and the kind of sweat that doesn’t come from exercise but from institutional heating.

At the front stood Mr. Bennett, who was not the headmaster but had—by some common understanding among pupils and staff alike—become the headmaster by attrition.

He was tall, but not tall in a distinguished way. He had the build of a man used to barking at fifteen-year-olds and winning. Skin the colour of grey clay, lips thin as biro lines. His hair was retreating strategically.

He was talking already. He didn’t need silence. He generated it.

“You boy—hat off!”

A ripple passed through the crowd. A head turned. Then more. Martin Davis, fourth year. Wore a soft-brimmed sun hat. A ridiculous thing, objectively—pale blue with a rim like a frisbee.

“Off. Now.”

Bennett’s voice didn’t shout. It cut.

Martin looked up. There was a pause. Not defiance—just delay. Like his body didn’t want to follow through.

And then, slowly, mechanically, he removed the hat.

Gasps.

Not dramatic ones. But audible. A collective inhale, as if someone had opened a door onto something private.

Martin was bald.

Not stylishly. Not by choice.

His head was pale, almost translucent. The kind of baldness that hadn’t been earned over decades but extracted—by chemicals, by treatments, by hands in latex gloves.

The hat, it turned out, had been serving a purpose.

Mr. Bennett didn’t blink.

“There you go,” he said, already looking elsewhere. “What medical purpose was that hat serving you, son? Nothing. Let’s keep it off at all times.”

And that was it. No pause. No shift in tone. No realisation.

Just order, reasserted.

Ben stared forward. He could feel, more than hear, the confusion in the row around him. A few kids whispered. One muttered, “he doesn’t know.” Someone else replied, “he does know.” But the muttering stopped before it grew.

There were rules. Even grief had to sit still during Assembly.

Still no headmaster.

The chair on stage—throne by implication—sat empty. Again.

They said he drank in his office. They said he didn’t have an office. They said he lived in a flat above the science labs and only came down at night.

Some said he wasn’t real.

Others had seen him—once, twice—a pale man with a red face and yellow teeth, wandering the halls with the aimless precision of the terminally hungover.

Teachers rarely mentioned him. Pupils never saw him. Parents, presumably, received his name typed at the bottom of newsletters—Mr. P. Durrant, Headmaster—as though that were enough to make him real.

He hadn’t come to Assembly in over three years.

And yet here they all were, cross-legged on the parquet floor like penitents at a funeral. And Bennett, dictating order with the grim joy of a man whose inner life had been permanently cauterised.

Not a word was said about the hospitalised teacher.

Not a whisper about Peter Shaw.

Not a hint that anything was amiss.

Just the same tired script:

Uniform expectations.

Littering on the east field.

Something about a fire drill.

A reminder that lateness would not be tolerated.

No mention of comas. Or violence. Or fear.

No mention of how many staff were quitting, or how many teachers had gone on stress leave, or how many parents had made calls and never received answers.

Just order.

Even if it had to be wrung out of the dying throat of the institution.

Bennett dismissed them with a nod.

They rose—silent, twitchy, dust-covered—and filtered out.

Ben stayed seated for a moment longer. The floor beneath him felt colder now. Or maybe he was just starting to feel the building in his bones.

It wasn’t just the school that was sick.

It was the silence.

30:T13bb,

By December the school had developed a rhythm that no timetable recorded.

It was not marked by bells or lessons or the periodic redistribution of authority that Assembly pretended to represent. It was marked instead by the repetition of small injuries, by the way certain names were spoken, by the routes people learned not to take.

Ben Norris learned these routes quickly. He learned them the way animals do: without commentary, without theory. He learned where laughter pooled. He learned which corridors carried echoes longer than they should. He learned the difference between being seen and being noticed.

Stephen Shaw did not bully him in the obvious sense. Ben was not worth that kind of attention. Stephen outsourced. He delegated. He specialised in inconvenience. In interruption. In tasks that had no purpose except visibility.

Some of the errands were static.

Ben would be instructed to stand in the middle of the playground during lessons, alone, while the rest of the school sat indoors. He stood there without movement, hands by his sides, jacket zipped or unzipped according to instruction, his presence framed by rows of classroom windows. Faces gathered behind the glass. Laughter arrived muffled, distorted by distance, but unmistakable. Teachers passed without comment, stepping around him as though he were a piece of equipment left out by mistake.

Other errands required motion.

He was sent into classrooms that were not his, asked to interrupt lessons to request pupils who did not exist. Names invented for the occasion. Each entrance reset the humiliation ritual: the pause, the turning of heads, the collective appraisal. He learned to ask clearly, to pronounce the names with care, to stand long enough for the laughter to finish before leaving. Precision mattered. Sloppiness invited correction.

Once, he did not go.

There was no public reckoning, no announcement. There was a sudden, concussive impact on the left side of his head, after which sound rearranged itself permanently. Afterward, he noticed the sound first—a high, continuous tone in his left ear, thin and unignorable, present especially in silence. It did not fade. It accompanied him to sleep and back again. He learned to live around it, to treat it as a feature rather than an injury. The school had ways of making lessons permanent. The tone settled in and never moved again; it would accompany him for the rest of his life.

After that, he stood where he was told. He entered rooms when instructed. He did not test the limits again. The humiliation was cumulative rather than spectacular. It arrived in looks held a fraction too long, in faces pulled deliberately, in the careful placement of feet when he passed. The school did not hate him passionately; it found him available.

This availability was noticed.

Claire Shaw, fourth year, operated on a different register. Where Stephen rearranged space, Claire rearranged bodies. She did not perform often, but when she did, the effect was decisive. One girl—older than Ben, louder than him—left the school entirely after an encounter that was spoken about in fragments and gestures. Claire remained. This was noted.

Peter Shaw remained too. Peter was a weather system. He moved through the building trailing consequence. His presence altered rooms before he entered them. Teachers adjusted tone in anticipation. Students adjusted posture. His name circulated in the way certain words do when people want to acknowledge something without summoning it.

Nothing touched the Shaws.

That was the lesson.

Ben absorbed it.

By December, his thoughts had begun to thicken. Not into madness—nothing dramatic—but into a constant, low-grade vigilance. He replayed moments for errors he might have committed without knowing. He noticed patterns that sometimes existed and sometimes didn’t. He listened for laughter that might already be happening elsewhere.

This was not irrational. It was adaptive.

The school rewarded anticipation. It punished surprise.

He slept badly. He woke early. He carried the sensation of being observed even when alone. Not paranoia exactly—more a reasonable inference drawn from experience. The building had taught him how to think.

Some days passed without incident. These days were the worst. They suggested possibility. They implied respite. They tempted hope.

Then something small would occur—an errand, a look, a name spoken slightly wrong—and the system would reassert itself.

By the time Christmas decorations appeared, taped half-heartedly to windows that refused cheer, Ben no longer expected anything to change. Change was not how this place operated. It repeated. It accumulated. It remembered.

The Shaws were still there.

The teachers were still tired.

The headmaster was still theoretical.

And Ben, moving carefully through it all, had learned the precise dimensions of his own containment.

31:T1742,

Ben had been walking into town at lunchtime for weeks by then.

Not to escape exactly—escape implied direction—but to thin the air. The school released him like pressure through a valve. He took the same route most days, past the betting shop, the boarded-up chemist, the newsagent with its rack of local papers bleached by the window.

He was halfway through deciding whether to go in when the man spoke.

“Going in there too, mate.”

Ben turned.

The man was already beside him, close enough to suggest coincidence, far enough away not to demand response. Mid-thirties, maybe. Ordinary coat. Nothing borrowed from menace.

“Sorry,” the man added. “Didn’t mean to startle you. I know it’s a bit odd. You don’t know me. But I know you.”

Ben felt the familiar tightening. The internal audit.

The man lifted his hands slightly, as if surrendering to the moment.

“Nothing sinister. I used to go to the school you’re at now. That’s all.”

Ben said nothing.

“All I want,” the man went on, “is for you to deliver a note to someone. That’s it. Just be a messenger. It won’t put you in danger. It’ll help you, actually.”

Ben frowned.

“Who’s it for?”

The man smiled faintly.

“Hold your horses. Let me grab a can first. Special Brew. Hope you don’t mind me drinking in the afternoon. You go get whatever you want. We’ll walk up to the pocket park—quiet up there. I’ll explain.”

They went in together, not together. The man bought his drink. Ben bought nothing. Outside, the man cracked the can open with an ease that suggested rehearsal.

“I’m Craig,” he said as they walked. “I went to that school about twenty years ago. It was as shit then as it is now.”

Ben glanced at him.

“How do you know me?”

Craig nodded, as if expecting that.

“My nieces. Twins. They’re in the year above you. They talk. Names come up. Patterns. Once I knew who you were, and who was in your class… well. This started making sense.”

“The Henderson twins?”

“Yes. And now you know I'm their uncle, we are no longer strangers.”

They reached the pocket park. A bench. Winter light. Bare trees that looked tired rather than dead.

Craig took out a folded piece of paper.

“I’ve got a note,” he said. “You’re going to give it to Stephen Shaw.”

Ben stopped.

“What?”

Ben felt something shift—not fear exactly, but interest. Focus.

“And after that,” Craig said, “your problems are over. You won’t be touched. None of them will touch you.”

Ben hesitated.

“Show me.”

Craig handed him the paper.

Ben unfolded it.

Names he didn’t recognise. Addresses in Cornwall. Devon. Phone numbers. Dates. The geography alone made no sense—hundreds of miles away. At the bottom, a short line: we know everything. Another beneath it, more precise: you do not touch anyone who gives you this note.

Ben looked up.

“This means nothing.”

Craig nodded.

“To you. Not to him.”

“Who are these people?”

“You don’t need to know.”

“Why me?”

Craig took a drink.

“I’ve been sitting on this for weeks, wondering how to deliver it. When your name came up, I thought—this might actually help someone.”

“What if I don’t?” Ben asked. “I mean—Stephen’s a nutter.”

Craig considered that.

“I believe you. And you don’t have to. I can do it myself. I just thought—if you do it, it changes things. Not in a loud way. In a quiet one. They won’t know who you’ve spoken to. That matters.”

Ben folded the note.

He didn’t say yes.

He didn’t say no.

Back in the room, time had returned to its usual viscosity.

Ben sat behind Stephen Shaw, the familiar geometry reasserted: backs, necks, the casual dominance of shoulders. The ringing in his ear threaded the silence. He watched Stephen’s head without intention, without narrative, and then—without instruction—he smiled.

It wasn’t large. It wasn’t expressive. It was simply there, an error in posture.

Someone saw it.

“Oi, Steve,” a voice said, already amused. “That little shit’s taking the piss out of you.”

Stephen turned. The smile was still there. The room adjusted.

Ben stood.

The movement was enough. Chairs shifted. A ripple passed through the desks like static. Stephen held a naked, quizzical look, his mind trying to calculate the situation.

“You want ringing in the other ear as well?”

Ben said nothing. He raised his hand. The paper was visible now, white and folded, absurdly ordinary.

Stephen kept talking as he reached for it, momentum carrying threat forward out of habit.

“You’re dead, mate. I swear—”

He took the note.

The sentence didn’t finish.

Stephen read. Then read again. His face didn’t change, exactly—it emptied. The laughter behind him wavered, lost purchase.

“Come on,” someone said. “You not going to sort him out?”

Stephen lifted a hand without looking up.

“Shut up,” he said. “I’m reading.”

The room fell quiet in a way Ben had never heard before—not obedience, not fear, but recalculation. The teacher spoke into it, voice thin, attempting to begin something that no longer had a place.

Stephen folded the paper once. Then again.

He stood, walked past the teacher, and left.

No slam. No announcement.

Just departure.

Ben sat back down.

The note was gone.

And something in the room—something that had always been assumed to be permanent—had shifted its weight.

Nothing happened after that.

Which was how Ben knew everything had.

32:T1208,

By the following Monday, the Shaws had become absence.

Stephen’s desk was empty. Claire’s locker untouched. Peter’s name still sat on the register like a clerical error. The family house stood open to inspection by rumour: beds unmade, furniture in place, a television still plugged in. Clothes gone. Car gone. No forwarding address. No explanation that could be phrased politely.

They had not moved.

They had left.

The school adjusted.

It always did.

A week later, during second period, the door to Ben’s classroom opened without knock or apology.

The man who entered did not look like a teacher. He was too carefully assembled for that—tailored jacket, polished shoes, hair arranged as if for an audience he rarely met. His face was flushed, shiny with a thin film of sweat, as though he had walked a long way very quickly or climbed stairs not meant for him.

The room hushed.

The man stood there for a moment, saying nothing, letting the silence re-form around him. He looked at the desks, the walls, the pupils—not searching, exactly, but accounting.

Then he spoke.

“Ben Norris.”

Ben felt the name detach itself from him, float briefly, then return with weight.

“Come with me.”

No explanation. No emphasis.

The whispers began as Ben stood. They followed him to the door, pressed close behind his back like breath.

The headmaster’s office was smaller than Ben expected. A room that had learned to lower expectations. Bookshelves half-filled. Papers stacked without order. A window that did not open.

Ben noticed a dog-eared paperback on the headmaster’s desk — Far Journeys, by Robert Monroe — its spine cracked as if it had been read more than once.

The man sat behind the desk and gestured for Ben to sit. He did not introduce himself.

“I’ll cut to the chase,” he said. “Three pupils left this school without notice last week. Their family home is empty. No explanation has been given.” He paused, as if weighing something, before adding, “It’s… unfortunate.”

He paused.

“I don’t recall that ever happening before.”

Ben said nothing.

“It has come to my attention,” the headmaster continued, “that you handed Stephen Shaw a note.”

He watched Ben carefully now—not with suspicion, but with interest.

“Nobody knows what was on that note,” he said. “It would help us understand what’s happened if you told me.”

“I can’t,” Ben said.

The headmaster frowned, as though this were a technical issue.

“That’s not how it works,” he said. “You tell me what was on the note.”

Ben waited.

“If you don’t,” the headmaster added, “you will be in a great deal of trouble. I know you may not care if you’re expelled, but I can make sure that follows you. Other schools don’t like damaged goods.”

Ben looked up.

“Why wouldn’t I care?” he asked.

The headmaster sighed.

“It’s no secret you’ve been having a hard time here. But bullying happens everywhere. You’re not the only one. That’s school life.”

Ben nodded slowly.

“So,” he said, “you call me in for this. But you never called them in.”

The headmaster shifted.

“Lots of pupils struggle,” he said. “That doesn’t make you special. We all have problems.”

Silence returned to the room.

“I didn’t write the note,” Ben said finally. “I was given it. I was told to hand it to Stephen. That’s what I did.”

“Who gave it to you?”

“I don’t know his name. I met him in town.”

The headmaster watched this closely.

“Do you have any information,” he asked carefully, “about anyone else in this school?”

Ben shook his head.

“Staff?” the headmaster pressed. “Myself?”

Ben hesitated, then shook his head again.

“You're shaking your head.” the headmaster insisted. “That's a no?”

“I have no more information. I didn't even understand the information on the note I handed Stephen.”

The relief was visible. Brief, but unmistakable.

“Well,” the headmaster said, standing. “I suppose I have to take your word for it.”

He opened the door.

“All I want now is for things to remain calm. You get your head down. Finish your time here. No more notes. If anyone gives you trouble, you come to me.”

Ben stood.

“Yes, sir.” he said.

The headmaster did not reply.

33:T83f,

The school rebalanced itself.

It did not mourn. It did not pause. It redistributed.

New bullies emerged—not replicas, not heirs, but opportunists sensing vacancy. Their methods were cruder, their reach shorter. They lacked the refinement of those who had gone, but the structure welcomed them anyway. Power, like water, sought the lowest available point.

Mr. Bennett continued barking at assemblies, his voice unsoftened by precedent. The rules remained immaculate in theory. The headmaster remained unseen, his presence detectable only through paperwork and absence.

Life resumed.

Some months later, word spread—quietly, awkwardly—that Martin Davis had died. No announcement was made. No assembly convened. His name disappeared from the register and did not return. The hat was never mentioned again.

As for Ben Norris, two weeks after the meeting in the headmaster’s office, he was gone.

There was no farewell. No explanation. His desk was cleared between lessons. His name was removed with administrative efficiency. Another pupil occupied the space.

Rumours followed, as they always do.

Some said his family had received death threats. Others said they’d been warned to leave quietly, immediately. There were whispers of new names, a new town, a fresh start arranged in haste. No one could say who had issued the warnings, or how seriously they were meant. One girl from his class claimed he had taken his own life on train tracks outside Wellingborough, though nobody could ever find a newspaper report confirming it. In time, even the rumours exhausted themselves. Ben Norris became the sort of absence people eventually stopped checking for.

It was all second-hand. All unprovable.

The school did not investigate.

It continued.

And for a while—only a while—people spoke more carefully. Laughter hesitated before landing. Certain names were avoided. Then winter ended, and the building settled back into itself.

Whatever had passed through it had gone.

Whatever it had learned, it did not keep.
