AS an only child I can definitely identify with this story.

The Myth About Alone

This feels most powerful when it stays inside the child’s limited understanding: the cold cereal, mud pies, swamp bank, and the assumption that this small, unsupervised life is simply normal. The repeated return to “alone” creates a quiet, almost numb rhythm that fits the narrator’s innocence, though it also makes the early section feel deliberately lingering. The mention of cousins, farms, and holiday baking briefly widens the world, and the final move toward adolescence gives the chapter a welcome sense of change beginning. I was especially drawn to the contrast between the child’s contentment and what the adult narrator can now recognize in hindsight.
