For some reason, this story reminded me of the “local crazy lady” my teachers used to scare us with when I was a child, saying, “If you don’t study, you’ll end up like her.” And it turned out she was actually a kind woman who fed stray animals and paid for their medical treatment out of her own pocket.

I liked how the story steadily reverses Oakhaven’s assumptions. Elias’s lantern first appears as a symbol of care, then his grief explains it, and finally the Great Storm shows the real danger it creates. Thomas’s quiet nighttime work builds toward a satisfying payoff when his “villainous” smoke is exactly what lets Daniel see the rocks. The villagers’ immediate misjudgment after the rescue reinforces the pattern, while Thomas’s refusal to wait for an apology gives the ending its calm, principled strength. The final line neatly captures the story’s message.
