As a middle-aged woman, you sit back and think of when you were little. You dreamed of being a princess to a prince. Someone who is going to sweep you off your feet, carry you in their arms, dance with you under the stars, spoil you with flowers and gifts.
Then you reach your teen years, still feeling like there's a prince out there that's going to dance under the stars, give you flowers. You imagine yourself in a princess dress, feeling all loved and being spoiled. You wait and dream for that day to come.
Then you reach adulthood, you meet a guy, you fall in love, you have children, you both have full-time jobs. Life is busy. There's always arguments, there's always apologies. It's like a routine. Everything becomes a routine.
There's no dancing under stars, no flowers and gifts. You realize you are not anyone's princess. Years go by, and you become so over productive over your children because you've lived life in survival mode, and you know for a fact that fairytales are not real. And you don't want your children to believe things that are going to hurt them.
Years later your children reach adulthood, and you see how they are planning their future, a future without you, they planning to move far and wide, away from you. Not to forget about you, but to spread their wings. To figure things out for themselves.
You sit alone...thinking of all the things they did to make you laugh and smile. You reflect on memories, good and bad ones.
All the pictures they drew for you. All the little flowers they picked and gave you. The little dances yous had. The little wounds you've kissed better. Those nights of bonfires, you would sit and watch the stars.
You sit and think of all the years you wish you could have done more. But in your heart, you know you done the best you could have.
So for me, in my heart.... Princes and Princesses do exist, my children are my true loves, my dances under the stars, all the flowers I had received, and still receive, all the special moments that money can't buy. It's more than a fairytale, more than words can describe. True love is in those cuddles, those little flowers, those drawn pictures.
So as you sit and think of the years that have gone by so fast. Just know that your little princess and princesses have grown to be beautiful people inside and out. And that is the joy in your heart. The story of your life that never ends. Your true love story.
