Memories flooded my mind as I walked through the old neighbourhood that day when went to work, each corner holding a story I have long forgotten. The broken benches reminded me of the chairs inside my classroom. The grass blooming with beauteous flowers brought me memories of that old garden inside my school. Everything was perfect, until that day.
Even though I was never rich and went to a public school, I had the most exquisite education, which led me to becoming a teacher. The Teachers Training Course was a challenge, ups and downs led me to thinking of giving up. However, my passion persisted. I graduated from college and was hired as an English Teacher in a private school. The kids were perfect, and the blackboard always gave me joy. Didactics were my thing, my plannings were delightful, from start to finish… yet, sadly, there was a finish line.
We were in the garden that day, learning new content and vocabulary as we played and danced, when suddenly, I pushed one of the kids by accident and his forehead reached a rock. I murdered a six-year-old kid by accident. My head was pumping out of fear. My heart was coming out of my chest, and there was nothing anyone could do to stop it. My boss came along, screaming in fear. “What did you do? Tell me why!” My body was frozen, I couldn’t move. “Alicia, do something!” one of the kids said. They were astounded, and some of them began to cry. That was it. There was only one thought in my mind: run.
I started to do so as fast as I could. However, the porter stopped me when I was just about to cross the door.
“Where are you going, miss Harrison?” he asked, gently.
I hesitated on what to say, but understood there was no escape at all.
“I murdered a kid.”
His grin turned into one of fear. The sirens began to come closer. The end was near, and it actually came.
I'm writing this down in prison, heartbroken, and my stomach revolts all the time. I've got a death penalty. That neighbourhood was no longer beautiful. However, I miss walking through it. And now, those beauteous flowers have withered.
