There are moments in life when everything seems to go wrong at once, leaving you wondering how a simple plan could turn into such an unsettling experience.
I had been invited to a programme and, because I did not have my car with me, I arranged for it to be brought from a place about seven hours away. I was looking forward to attending the programme, but my heart was also set on something far more personal. My sister was in the country for only one week, and I wanted to spend time with her and my parents before she left.
I knew how precious that time was. There are some opportunities we can postpone, but time with loved ones is not always ours to reschedule.
Then came the first disappointment.
I woke up on the day I had planned to move forward with my activities, only to be told that the car had broken down. A replacement part had to be brought from Accra, and it took three days to get the vehicle repaired. Three days of waiting, uncertainty and watching the little window of opportunity I had with my family slowly close.
Eventually, I told the driver to take the car back. I thought it was better to stop the arrangement than to lose more time waiting. But then I was told that the driver was already on his way to where I was.
I could only hope that things would finally work out.
They did not.
At about eight o'clock that night, the car broke down for the second time, before the driver could even reach me. This time, the only consolation was that the vehicle was close to a police post. In the darkness of the night, that small detail offered some reassurance in an otherwise frustrating situation.
But what happened next left me even more concerned.
I have been calling the driver, but my calls are not going through. Up to now, I have not heard from him. I do not know exactly what is happening, and the silence has left me with questions I cannot yet answer.
I find myself thinking about the entire experience. The first breakdown, the three days lost waiting for repairs, the decision to send the car back, and then the second breakdown in the middle of the night. Everything happened so unexpectedly, and at a time when I was trying to make the most of a rare opportunity to be with my family.
It is difficult not to wonder why things have unfolded this way, especially when I have never experienced anything quite like this before.
Yet, I am learning that not every unfortunate experience comes with an immediate explanation. Sometimes, there are practical reasons behind what happens. Sometimes, people become unreachable for reasons we do not know. And sometimes, uncertainty itself is the hardest part of an experience.
I do not want to assume the worst, nor do I want to attach a meaning to events before I understand what has happened. For now, I can only hope that the driver is safe and that the situation will become clearer.
But beyond the car and the unanswered calls lies another disappointment: the time I had hoped to spend with my parents and sister. That was the part of my plan that mattered most to me, and it hurts to think that circumstances beyond my control may have taken some of those precious moments away.
Perhaps this experience is a reminder that life does not always respect our schedules. We can make arrangements, anticipate beautiful moments and do everything within our power to prepare, yet still find ourselves facing situations we never imagined.
The lesson is not that every setback is a warning or that every closed road carries a mysterious message. Rather, it is that we must learn to remain calm when circumstances become confusing, seek answers where answers can be found, and protect our peace while we wait for what we do not yet understand.
Sometimes, the greatest challenge is not the problem itself but the uncertainty that follows it.
And sometimes, when the road refuses to open, we must find the courage to pause, gather ourselves and decide how best to continue.
For now, I am left with unanswered questions, a disrupted plan and the hope that everything will be well. But I remind myself that one difficult experience does not have to define the days ahead.
Life may interrupt our plans, but we must not allow uncertainty to take away our hope.
