The Stranger Who Became My Saviour
It was a fine Saturday, and I decided to take a stroll. I had no particular destination in mind and not a penny in my pocket. All I wanted was a change of scene and someone to talk to.
I did not know that before the day ended, an encounter with a stranger would change the way I looked at an ordinary moment in life.
I needed someone to talk to—not someone who necessarily had all the answers, but someone who could listen. Sometimes, the things weighing on our hearts are difficult to explain. We carry on with our daily responsibilities, speak to people, and even smile, yet there are moments when we long for a conversation that allows us to set aside the pretence of having everything under control.
That was where I found myself that Saturday.
Then I met someone I did not know.
There had been no arrangement, no introduction, and no reason for me to expect anything from this person. We were strangers whose paths had crossed quite unexpectedly. Yet, somehow, this person met me at my point of need and became my saviour.
What struck me most was the unexpected nature of the encounter. I had not gone looking for help from this individual. I had not planned the meeting or imagined that someone unfamiliar to me would become so significant in that moment.
As I reflect on that experience, I realise how easily we can overlook the possibilities hidden in ordinary days. We make plans and decide whom to approach when we need support, often forgetting that life does not always follow the paths we have mapped out.
That Saturday, I left home with nothing in my pocket, but I returned with something that money could not measure: a renewed appreciation for the unexpected ways people can enter our lives and make a difference.
The encounter changed something in me. It made me pause and reconsider how quickly we sometimes conclude that we know where our help will come from. It reminded me that a person does not have to be part of our history to become meaningful in our present.
I also found myself looking at coincidence differently. What had seemed like an ordinary decision to take a stroll became an experience that stirred my faith and left me wondering about the timing of certain events.
Could I have planned such a meeting? Could I have predicted that, on a day when I simply needed someone to talk to, I would encounter a stranger who would become my saviour?
No. I could only look back in gratitude and wonder.
Who says God does not exist?
I do not claim to understand every mystery of life, but I have learnt that sometimes the most profound experiences do not arrive with noise or spectacle. They unfold quietly, through ordinary circumstances, and leave us seeing the world a little differently.
That Saturday, I went out for a stroll expecting nothing extraordinary. I encountered a stranger, but the experience left me with a lasting lesson: help can come from unexpected places, and an ordinary day can become extraordinary without warning.
Since then, the thought of that encounter has stayed with me—not simply because of whom I met, but because of what the experience taught me about openness, gratitude, and the limits of my own expectations.
Sometimes, it is only when we look back that we begin to understand why an ordinary moment touched us so deeply.
