The rustling of wings is a sound so quiet that most of us do not hear it.
It's not too loud. It does not need any attention. It does not argue, protest, or fight space wars. It just glides soundlessly through the air, a reminder that the most powerful things in the world are often the most merciful.
There is no roar of butterflies. They never win. They don’t create empires or gather riches or pursue fame. But they preach sermons that no theologian can improve. They are living parables that Jesus himself might have told if he had walked among us in another form.
This is a journey through the life of a butterfly, from the fragile egg to the crawling caterpillar, from the dissolving chrysalis to the soaring wings, and all the while we will see the face of our Savior.
The Gospel in a Garden
The butterfly knows what we often forget, love is not measured by how long we hold on but by how much we give away.
Mother butterfly lays her eggs and dies. She never sees her children in flight. She never sees them drinking their nectar, nor dancing in the sun. She gives her all. Her strength. Her time. Her very life. And leaves the rest to the Creator.
Is that not the gospel?
Jesus gave His life for children. He would never see it on this earth. He bled for those who would never know His face on this side of heaven. He died for a world that did not love Him back—so that we might have the chance to live, to grow, and one day to fly.
"Very truly I tell you, unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it produces many seeds." — John 12:24 (NIV)
Where Are You Today?
Perhaps you are in a season of laying eggs, giving yourself to people who may never realize your sacrifice.
Perhaps you're going through a period of slow growth, wondering if you'll ever change.
Maybe you're in the chrysalis, dissolving, waiting, and trusting in the darkness.
Perhaps, by God's grace, you're beginning to grow and learn to fly.
Wherever you are, this word is for you.
"Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!" — 2 Corinthians 5:17 (NIV)
A Prayer for the Journey
Father,
Teach me to trust You in every season. When I am pouring myself out and no one sees, remind me that You are the One who sees. When I am waiting in the dark, remind me that You are creating something beautiful. When I am afraid to let go, remind me that surrender is the doorway to resurrection.
Help me to whisper when the world screams. Help me to give when it costs me everything. Help me to fly when the time comes—not for my glory, but for Yours.
In Jesus' name, Amen.
Your Reflection
What season are you in? Egg, caterpillar, chrysalis, or wings?
Today, take a moment to sit quietly before the Lord. Ask Him what He is forming in you. And remember: the butterfly does not seek applause. She leaves the harvest to God and just lays down her life for the next generation.
May we learn to do likewise.
Let us learn to whisper.
May we learn to soar.
And may we learn to be willing to give all—as Jesus gave all for us.
I’d love to hear from you: What season of the butterfly most resonates with your present walk with God? Tell us in the comments below.
