With a hollow chest, I cast a tethering spell. I anchored it to his very soul, using every ounce of my remaining strength to drag him back across the miles, straight into my waiting hands. The effort drained me, twisting my magic into something jagged and sharp, but my vengeance required his presence. I designed a beautiful, lingering torment for him. He would pay for every beat my heart could no longer make. I could feel the darkness bleeding into my light, transforming the pure magic I once cherished into a cold, consuming abyss. I was crossing a line from which I could never return, and I welcomed it.
The curse started small, settling into his bones like winter frost. I made him believe a mortal sickness was taking him, watching with quiet satisfaction as the constant, gnawing hunger and unexplained nausea broke his spirit. He thought he was dying of a natural plague, completely unaware that his slow demise was just the opening act of my design.
His end did not come quietly, for the woods themselves demanded a piece of his suffering. As he lay gasping on the mossy floor, the surrounding trees began to shift and groan, their branches bending low to trap him in a cage of living wood. Thorns ripped through his skin and roots forced their way into his clothes, binding him tightly to the earth as the forest slowly, methodically began to swallow him whole.
I watched his terror unfold, and inside me, the final transformation took hold. The last spark of light in my spirit snapped, releasing a wave of pure shadow that washed over the clearing. The white light that once defined me turned to ash, reshaping my form into something magnificent and terrifying. My hair darkened like midnight, and a crown of black wood wove itself into my brow. He begged for mercy as the mud and roots choked out his final breath, dragging his body down into the deepest belly of the woods. I didn't feel a shred of pity, only the immense, intoxicating weight of my new power as the undisputed queen of the dark forest.
It did not take long for the forest to bring me a new plaything. A weary traveler wandered into the clearing just after midnight, his horse shivering with fear as it sensed the heavy, suffocating aura of my domain. The man saw my cottage and called out, looking for shelter from the biting cold, completely blind to the fact that he had walked straight into a trap.
Standing in the shadows of the ancient trees, I tested the limits of my new magic with a simple tilt of my hand. The shadows at my feet detached themselves from the ground, stretching upward like living silk to wrap around the traveler's horse, freezing the beast mid-stride. Before the man could even scream, I whispered a word, and a swarm of black moths erupted from my palms, completely clouding his vision and choking the air from his lungs.
I stepped into the moonlight, my obsidian eyes reflecting his absolute panic. The forest floor groaned beneath him, the roots already shifting beneath the soil, eager to swallow another victim at my command. I smiled, feeling the cold thrill of absolute control. This forest was no longer a sanctuary for the lost; it was a graveyard, and I was its executioner.
