The last thing I remember from last night was walking through the woods. Did something happen to me on my way home?
And then there's Levi. Why was he talking to himself? Why did he say, "Why did you do this to me?" Why would he ask that? He knows something, and I am going to find out exactly what happened last night.
As I walked back toward the path I took home last night, I noticed my bracelet lying on the ground. Levi had just given it to me at lunch yesterday afternoon. Why was it on the forest floor?
I decided to go to Levi's house. I walked straight into his room and found him sitting in absolute silence, his face entirely pale.
"What did you do?" I asked him.
He looked up as if he heard me, but all he whispered was, "Sorry."
"Sorry for what, Levi? What did you do to me?"
Levi dropped to his knees beside his bed. "Lord, forgive me for what I did," he prayed.
"What did you do?!" I screamed.
Levi spoke aloud, his voice trembling. "Tiffany, if you can hear me... I'm so sorry. I didn't mean for you to die. I just wanted to scare you. But when you tripped and fell, you hit the side of your head against the rock. All I saw was blood pouring out. I didn't run for help... why didn't I run? Why did I leave you all alone? Please, forgive me."
His tears fell onto the floorboards, and for the first time, the anger inside me began to hollow out, replaced by a profound, freezing emptiness. Levi hadn't hated me; he had just been stupid, reckless, and terrified. I looked down at my hands, noticing how the light from his window filtered right through them. I was gone. No amount of screaming or crying would bring Tiffany back to life. Leaving Levi to his knees and his guilt, I walked out of the room, stepping forward into an unknown darkness, guided only by the faint memory of a bracelet left behind in the dirt.
