Wayne is happily married to his high school sweetheart Elena and they had a pair of twins Timothy and Tricia, both 3. Wayne worked as a IT specialist while Elena worked as a financial analyst at a multinational corporation in Hong Kong. Due to their busy working schedule, they hired a nanny to look after the children.
One day, Elena called Wayne and told him that she would be returning home late. Since she had told him beforehand that she would expect to return home late during the next few days, Wayne took it rather calmly. Little did he know their peaceful life would be shattered.
Elena did not return home that night. Wayne made repeated calls to her mobile phone, but it went directly to voicemail, which meant that either her phone battery died or she was somewhere where there was no coverage at that point. He called Elena's colleagues, who were shocked that she had not returned home at this late hour. As it turned out, Elena was meeting a client that day to evaluate a business proposal, but never made it to the meeting. Suddenly, the landline rang.
"Hello?" he said.
"May I speak to Mr Wayne Shum Tak-keung please?" the caller requested.
"Mr Shum, we're calling from Kowloon West Division. We found the car inside the river, which belonged to your wife, Mdm Elena Fong Yan-suk." Wayne asked the nanny to look after Timothy and Tricia. He then rushed to the scene where Elena's car was reportedly found. It was partially flooded, but Elena was nowhere to be found. The police believed that because she was running late, she had gone over the speed limit and crashed her car into the railings of the bridge and fell into the river. "The tide is high recently, so the body could have ended up even outside of Hong Kong," said the police officer in charge of the search. Wayne disputed the claims, saying that Elena had an excellent driving record. Besides the car, the police also recovered a purse at the other end of the river. It had Elena's documents inside which pointed to her supposed death. Wayne refused to believe his beloved wife had passed away. The police widened the radius of the search at his insistence, but did not find anything linked to Elena's disappearance. Even investigations into the client whom she was meeting drew a blank. As a matter of fact, no one knew who the client was, or whether he even existed. Even when the search was called off, Wayne continued to look for his wife on his own. He hired private investigators and hired some volunteers, but even that did not yield results.
3 years had passed since that fateful incident. Wayne dedicated himself to raising Timothy and Tricia, which kept him from losing his sanity as he mourned Elena's mysterious disappearance. Although friends and family had advised him to remarry to give the children a complete family, Wayne rejected the idea. He was still devoted to Elena although she was presumed dead, and held on firmly to the belief that she was still alive and would return home some day.
One day, Wayne was on his way back from work. He decided to stop by and get Timothy and Tricia some treats. At this point in their life, the nanny only took care of the children during the day while he took over their care in the evenings. Having parked his car in the parking lot, Wayne walked towards the store when he saw a crowd gather. He pushed past the crowd and saw a woman lay on the streets. He came closer and when he saw the face of the woman, he could not believe his eyes. She looked exactly like his missing wife Elena, except that she was clearly very poor and probably homeless. She was having a fever.
Wayne wasted no time in bringing the woman to the nearest hospital, where the doctors told him that it was fortunate that she was brought there in time. The woman's fever had subsided, and she could be discharged on the same day. When she regained consciousness a while later, she thanked Wayne, but did not know who he was.
"Elena, my wife. It's me, Wayne, your husband. How did you end up on the streets and why are you dressed like this?" he whispered. However, the woman shook her head in response and blushed before answering, "I'm sorry, but I really don't know you. This must have been a mistake." But it was impossible to convince Wayne, who recognized the voice and intonation of the woman as those of the love of his life.
"No, I'm very sure it's you. Look, I'll show you our family photos," Wayne exclaimed and reached into his pocket to get his mobile phone. He kept their family photos throughout the years and not a day passed that he did not look at them.
"Here, take a look. That's our wedding. Do you see us? That's me, that's you, that's Timothy and here's Tricia. Do you remember Timothy and Tricia, our children?" Wayne asked. Unfortunately, sincere confusion was written all over the stranger's face.
"No, I don't remember any of this. Maybe that isn't me but some woman who looks a lot like me," the woman suggested. Wayne turned pale but stuck to his words. He quickly realized that Elena had amnesia and needed to be examined by the doctor. "I'll call for a doctor," he told her and pressed the button beside her hospital bed. "I'm sorry, but I think you might have amnesia." At that moment, Wayne fervently wanted his wife to remember everything so they could finally put all of the misfortunes of the past 3 years behind them. But even after Elena got examined by the doctor, her problem was not an easy one to solve.
"It's highly likely you're suffering from temporary amnesia caused by a head injury. Right there, at the top of your head. Do you see it? There's a small scar there. I think you got it about 2 to 3 years ago," the doctor said, pointing to a small scar on Elena's head. Only then did Wayne realize that his wife was attacked by some carjackers 3 years ago.
After collecting Elena's medicine, Wayne decided to take her home. When Elena's relatives learnt the good news, their happiness knew no bounds. However, their happiness was short-lived. Not only did Elena not remember any of her relatives, but she clearly felt uncomfortable being back home. Seeing her twin children Timothy and Tricia did not bring back memories either, even though she interacted with them.
Trying to find a way out of the situation, Wayne hired a hypnosis specialist who conducted hypnotherapy sessions in order to help Elena regain her memory. Collecting information by tiny bits and pieces, the hypnosis specialist found out that Elena had been living with a man named Leslie and a woman named Bianca all this time. Saying that her life was prison life would be a huge understatement. The couple kept Elena in some old, run-down house and treated her horribly. At first, Wayne did not pay much attention to the name of the man that Elena had been living with. But suddenly, he remembered Leslie Yuen Kei-cheung, his nemesis from high school. This name seemed all too familiar to Wayne. Leslie had constantly bullied Elena in high school due to her underprivileged background. Wayne, who was her classmate and good friend back then, would defend her against Leslie's constant bullying. Once, Leslie went too far and cut up Elena's school shoes. It was the only pair of school shoes she had and they were quite worn out, but Elena's mother had painstakingly repaired them. As such, Elena was quite upset. When Wayne found out what happened, he confronted Leslie, who not only was not remorseful but insulted Elena for being a 'dirty beggar'. Their form teacher, Miss Yip came into the classroom and heard everything. She scolded Leslie for bullying Elena and lauded Wayne for defending her. Leslie had looked at Wayne and Elena with hate in his eyes and threatened to get back at them. As Wayne was recounting the incident, the puzzle pieces started gathering in his head. Fortunately at that moment, Elena's memory started returning. With tears in her eyes, she confirmed that it was Leslie Yuen Kei-cheung who had attacked her 3 years ago, and he had an accomplice, a woman named Bianca Hung Nga-lam.
It turned out that on the day of the incident, Elena was on her way to meet her client when Leslie stopped her car. He asked for a ride to the nearest cafe. Since it was on her way, Elena agreed to help him. But halfway through, Leslie asked her to stop the car. He then alighted and pulled her out of the car, which shocked her. Elena told him that she was meeting a client, but Leslie told her that it was not necessary. He then called out to Bianca, who appeared and revealed that she was in cahoots with him. She was secretly in love with Leslie and would always take his side, even though she knew he was at fault. They conspired to get back at Wayne and Elena, whom Leslie felt had caused him to get scolded by Miss Yip back then. Bianca had called Elena using a SIM card bought from the black market. Posing as a client, Bianca requested to meet up, claiming she had a business proposal for Elena to evaluate. Elena had taken the bait, and fell right into Leslie and Bianca's trap. Upon hearing the revelation, Elena tried to escape, but Leslie knocked her unconscious. He and Bianca then pushed Elena's car into the river and threw her purse several miles from the scene, thus creating the illusion that she was dead. Throughout the 3 years, Leslie and Bianca did nothing but bully Elena, who had lost her memory, all the while pretending to be her family. One day, Leslie and Bianca went out in a hurry and forgot to lock the door. Elena sneaked out of the house when they had left, and started living on the street. Since she had neither money nor documents, she could only beg for money to earn a living.
After Elena gave official testimony to the police, Leslie and Bianca were arrested and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. Now that the guilty had been punished, Wayne and Elena went back to being a loving family together with Timothy and Tricia, finally getting their lives back.
One day, Elena called Wayne and told him that she would be returning home late. Since she had told him beforehand that she would expect to return home late during the next few days, Wayne took it rather calmly. Little did he know their peaceful life would be shattered.
