Simon Holdsworth clocked off at five, signed his name in the Tesco logbook, and stepped out into the thin, pink light. He’d been stacking shelves since midnight. His ears still hummed with the drone of the refrigerators.

He sat in his car, rubbed his eyes, and felt the vibration of his phone against the dashboard. A ping from the group:

“New formation, Upton Scudamore. Big one. Looks legit.”

Simon straightened a little. He’d driven those lanes a hundred times, always looking for the shimmer of flattened barley. Upton Scudamore was ten minutes away.

The roads were empty. The hedgerows gleamed wet in the dawn. A kestrel hung in the still air over a field already silvered with mist. When he reached the gate there were three other cars, a few figures with cameras, one with a thermos. He recognised one of them from the forums — FieldWatcher82 — though no one used real names here.

Simon kept a respectful distance. He always did. He lifted the boot of his car, took out the case, and unfolded his drone. Battery full, SD card clean. The blades whirred into life, high and thin like gnats.

From the ground, the circle just looked like disturbance — barley bent with a certain logic. From forty metres up, the screen on his controller blossomed into geometry: a flower of life, crisp, unbroken, almost luminous against the gold of the crop.

He felt the old familiar ache in his chest — beauty disguised as mathematics.

Then he saw them: four circles, set apart to the left.

Not decorative. Not random. A column of four — one small, one slightly bigger, one enormous, the final one a similar size to the second — as if arranged deliberately.

He took stills, switched to measure mode. The drone traced their diameters:

He opened his AI app and asked, “Give me the size ratios of the planets, with Earth as 1.” Within seconds, the numbers blinked back — neat, obedient, cosmic.

Mars, Venus, Jupiter.

He matched them, one by one. The ratios were exact:

He posted the thing at 3:17 a.m., from his phone in the back office of the Warminster Tesco — in between stacking bananas and binning the out-of-date hummus.

The thread was posted on Reddit in r/conspiracy. The title: “Crop Circle near Upton Scudamore: 3I/Atlas connection???”.

A nothing title, a midnight doodle.

By breakfast it had 2,000 upvotes.

By tea-time, forty thousand.

By midnight, it was a meme.

The internet took it like a communion wafer — thin, flavourless, instantly dissolved into meaning.

There were charts. Simulations. A man on TikTok explaining planetary ratios in the voice of a priest performing last rites. Someone slowed Simon’s drone footage and added that funereal music you get in UFO documentaries from the ’90s.

And yet — the ratios held. The damned numbers matched. From Earth as one: Mars 0.53, Venus 0.95, Jupiter 10.97. It was almost too good.

And that was what made it viral. Because everything viral has to sit on the knife-edge between obviously bollocks and just maybe.

He watched his own discovery proliferate like mould on warm bread. “The Warminster Witness,” one YouTube channel called him. It had a kind of ring to it, didn’t it? Something biblical, something doomed.

Two days later, a BBC South West van appeared in the car park at the end of his shift. They wanted to film him at work, the poor sod — the prophet among the punnets. He stood by the trolley bay while the reporter, all gloss and grin, asked her question.

“Simon, crop circles aren’t exactly new around here. But your theory — the link to comet 3I/Atlas — that’s got the internet buzzing. What’s different about this one?”

He gave her the talk. The numbers, the orbits, the ratios. “It’s a message,” he said, quietly, as if addressing the air itself. A warning, perhaps. Atlas isn’t due to pass anywhere near Earth — unless it changes course. And these circles—these are in scale. They know something.”

The segment ran six and a half minutes.

When Simon watched it on YouTube later, he saw a man who looked both older and newer than himself. A man selected by history for a particular kind of attention.

Comments poured in: finally someone with brains, Warminster’s Galileo, don’t laugh, he’s onto something.

The other half laughed anyway.

At Tesco next morning, Kev from produce clapped him on the shoulder. “Fair play, mate. Always thought you were a bit of a space cadet, but that was a proper interview. You looked sharp.”

Simon smiled, half-gracious. “Yeah, it’s gone global. Fortean Times DM'd me on X - asking for some quotes for their next edition. Couple of American stations want the interview footage. It’s all… really happening.”

Kev grinned. “Big time, mate. Astronomical.”

Simon gave a small, strange laugh — thin as static. The kind that lingers in the air long after the speaker’s walked away.

MILES: Yeah, if it wasn’t him, it’d have been someone else within hours. That was the whole point. We designed the bait.

NARRATION (Arlo): We planned it for a month. Worked out the ratios on CAD software — one circle for Mars, one for Venus, Jupiter, Earth. Proportional. Exact. Because we knew 3I/Atlas was trending. Everyone online’s been talking about it — “interstellar comet,” “possible alien craft,” all that jazz.

MILES: The flower pattern was the boring part. Every crop circle artist since 1992’s done one. It’s wallpaper now — new-age IKEA. We wanted something that looked meaningful, but wasn’t.

MATT: That’s the sweet spot. You give people almost a reason. Then they fill in the rest.

ARLO: We’re not trying to be cruel. We’re just showing how belief works now. Paranormal stuff, conspiracies — they’re the new religion. People want mystery, apocalypse, significance. Something to save them from, I don’t know — the algorithm, probably.

MILES: It took about an hour and a half, start to finish. We started at three a.m. and were gone before sunrise. Had a bit of a scare when a car slowed down near the ridge, but otherwise — smooth.

MATT: You can see the dawn light on this drone shot. [Points to footage.] That was literally us packing up.

ARLO: We’re not saying don’t believe in anything. We’re saying, question what you want to believe in. You know that X-Files line — “I want to believe.” That’s the problem, isn’t it? Wanting.

MILES: Belief’s not the issue. It’s the wanting.

[Beat. They all nod gravely, as if they’ve just said something profound.]

The viral crop circle near Upton Scudamore — first hailed as a possible message from deep space, later revealed to be an elaborate prank by three Oxford graduates — continues to divide opinion. Joining us this morning is Arlo Pennington, one of the trio behind the so-called “Rationalist Circles.” Arlo, thanks for being with us.

ARLO: Morning. Thanks for having me.

PRESENTER: Now, first off — this has been quite a week for you. You’ve been accused of everything from satire to sacrilege. Why did you do it?

ARLO: Well, I suppose we wanted to test something — not people’s intelligence, exactly, but their appetite for meaning. You know, there’s this huge appetite for the unexplained these days. Crop circles, alien visitations, ancient prophecies, you name it. Conspiracy has become a kind of comfort. It’s the new religion — you don’t need faith, you just need a good Wi-Fi signal.

PRESENTER: Right. And the comet connection — 3I/Atlas — that wasn’t accidental, was it?

ARLO: No, not at all. We were quite deliberate. We designed the four circles to mirror the relative sizes of Mars, Venus, Jupiter, and Earth. The ratios are exact, within a few decimal points. We knew someone would take the bait, because people want patterns. We just supplied the lines for them to colour in.

PRESENTER: And that “someone” turned out to be Simon Holdsworth — the man who first proposed the theory. We did reach out to Mr. Holdsworth for comment, but he hasn’t replied to our emails or phone calls.

ARLO: Yeah, that’s a shame. I mean, genuinely. I’ve got respect for people like Simon — they’re imaginative, curious. They make the world more interesting. We weren’t trying to pick on him personally. It could’ve been anyone.

PRESENTER: Still, some would say it’s a little cruel. Millions of people believed him for a few days.

ARLO: Well, all it took was three Oxford grads, some rope, and a bit of wood to convince millions that aliens were about to attack Earth. I think that says something important about the culture, don’t you?

PRESENTER: You’re clearly proud of what you pulled off — do you see this as art, as social commentary, or just a prank?

ARLO: (laughs) A bit of all three, I think. Art because it took planning and precision. Social commentary because it says more about the audience than the artist. And yes, a prank — in the sense that it exposes something about belief. But we’re not vandals or hoaxers. We’re more like — anthropologists.

PRESENTER: Do you think you’ve crossed a line, though? The people who believed — some of them were sincere.

ARLO: Well, I’d say sincerity isn’t a substitute for truth. People can be sincerely wrong. What matters is whether you’re willing to be corrected. We just provided the correction a bit sooner than usual.

PRESENTER: You talk about belief as a kind of sickness. Isn’t there a risk of condescension in that?

ARLO: Maybe. But I think there’s a worse risk in leaving it unchallenged. We live in a world of algorithms — the most shared idea wins, not the most accurate one. The only antidote is to shock people into scepticism.

PRESENTER: Would you say you feel sorry for Mr. Holdsworth?

ARLO: Honestly? I feel sorry that the world made him so hungry for meaning. It’s not really his fault. We’ve all become dependent on wonder. It’s just... some of us prefer to manufacture it.

PRESENTER: (laughs) That’s quite a line. Do you mind if we use that for the headline?

ARLO: Go for it.

PRESENTER: Arlo Pennington, thank you very much for joining us.

Arlo switched off the car stereo in the drive and sat there for a second, smiling at his own voice. It had come out smooth, unflappable — the tone of a man who’d made his point neatly and without malice. The message was serious, even noble, he thought: people should think harder.

Inside the kitchen, his mother was slicing an apple, Radio 4 still playing faintly in the background.

“Sounded very good, darling,” she said, not looking up. “You’ve got a nice clear voice for radio.”

“Cheers, Mum.”

His father looked up from the paper. “I thought you were too soft on them, frankly.”

“Dad—”

“Well, I did! You could’ve gone harder. They make up nonsense and everyone applauds them. You should’ve said as much.”

Arlo smiled, half-indulgent, half-defensive. “It’s not about that, Dad. We’re not trying to humiliate anyone.”

His father shrugged. “Well, I’d say mission accomplished, anyway.”

Arlo escaped into the garden. It was a mild afternoon — light cloud, the smell of cut grass. But something felt off: a small subtraction he couldn’t name at first. Then he realised — his drone should’ve been on the patio table, battery charging in its case.

It was gone.

He frowned, checked the lawn, then the shed. Nothing.

Back in the kitchen: “Dad, where did you put my drone?”

His father looked over the top of his glasses. “Haven’t touched it.”

“I left it out on the patio.”

“I’ve been here all day. Ask your mother.”

Mum shook her head, knife still working at the apple. “Haven’t seen it, love.”

Arlo went upstairs, checked his room, the boot of his car. The case, the charger, the spare propellers — all there. Just not the drone.

He stood on the back step for a long minute, scanning the sky, as though expecting to see it hover back into view.

Then, quietly:

“Dad,” he called. “I think my drone’s been stolen.”

Miles woke to a low hum — the kind of sound that makes you think a machine has been left running somewhere. He leaned out of bed, blinked at the clock: 7:38. He was going to be late again.

Down on the street, the hum was nothing — just silence, heavy and waiting. Four tyres slumped flat as puddles, their rubber lips torn ragged.

For a moment, Miles just stared, unable to make sense of it — as if his brain refused the data. He stood in the morning air, then....phone in hand, taking a photo for the insurance. A bead of sweat ran down his back.

He crouched, touched the edge of one of the slashes — clean, deliberate. Not kids. Not random. Someone who meant it.

A man in a hi-vis jacket ambled past with a takeaway coffee.

“Hell of a job, that,” he said. “All four?”

“All four.”

“Must’ve been personal.”

Miles gave a small, crooked smile. “Yeah,” he said. “I think I know who.”

The man nodded in that way people do when they don’t really want to know.

Miles straightened, stared down the empty street. He didn’t say the name, but it sat there anyway, buzzing in his head. He almost admired the symmetry of it. Four circles, four tyres. A message written in rubber.

Matt’s street was all fresh brick and neat hedges, the kind of place where nothing was meant to happen.

He’d been out all day lecturing at the college — “Intro to Media Studies,” twenty-four glazed faces — and got home just after six.

He saw the door before he saw anything else.

It was grey — a single, streaky coat. Which was strange, because when Matt left for work that morning, the door had been white.

He put his key in the lock, half expecting it to smear. The paint was tacky; his fingers came away stained.

Next door’s builder, in overalls, was hauling a toolbox from his van.

“Evenin’,” Matt said, forcing cheer.

“Alright, mate.” The builder squinted. “Was that you having that door done, then?”

“Sorry?”

“Earlier on, fella turned up, paint tin, brush. Thought you’d hired him. Didn’t say much. Just got on with it. 15 minutes later, off he went. Looks, uh—” he gestured, “—looks a bit rushed, if I’m honest.”

Matt blinked. “What’d he look like?”

The man scratched his head. “Hard to say. Hoodie up. Bit scruffy. Kept his face down. Could’ve been anyone, really.”

“Anyone?”

“Well…” the builder hesitated, eyes darting sideways. “Funny, he did look familiar. Maybe off the news or something — hard to say."

Matt’s throat tightened. “What do you mean, off the news?”

“Dunno. Wouldn’t swear to it. Just had one of those faces.”

The builder climbed into his van.

“Probably some nutter,” he called through the window. “World’s full of them.”

Matt stood in his drive long after the van pulled away. The air smelt faintly of solvent and something else — fear, maybe, or damp soil.

He looked at the streaky grey paint, the uneven brushstrokes, the single attempt at transformation.

The field was nothing now. Just frozen mud, a long scab of earth under a pewter sky. Simon stood in the middle of it, his boots clicking on the hard ground. The air had that February sting, sharp as bleach.

He looked around for the old geometry — the circles, the lines, the symmetry that once hummed beneath the wheat — but there was nothing. Only the ghost of it in his head. He could still see it, as if someone had burnt the pattern onto the back of his eyelids.

Funny thing about circles, he thought. They don’t really end. They just fade till you forget where you started.

He had the date in his phone — March 16th, 2026. He’d written it down on the back of his payslip too, in case the phone died. Atlas–Jupiter fly-by. After that, it would either peel off into deep space or swing perversely inward, using Jupiter's gravity assist, toward them. Toward Earth.

He muttered it aloud, just to hear the sound of it: “That’s the countdown.”

He thought about the three graduates. Oxford boys. The smug way they’d looked into the camera, all clever angles and moral postures. He could still hear one of them saying, we did it because people want to believe. That line had looped in his mind for months, like tinnitus.

Government stooges, he thought. That’s all they were. You think they’re clever enough to pull that off alone? No. The footage, the timing — no. That was managed. That was arranged. AI fakes, deepfakes, whole thing choreographed.

He smiled a little. Not the happy kind — the kind that tightens the face.

He’d been on Reddit the night before. There were others who felt the same as him. People connecting the same dots. There were even diagrams.

I’m not ruling it out, he thought. None of us are ruling it out anymore.

The wind came in cold from the downs, biting into him. Simon pulled his jacket tighter, watched his breath drift off like smoke.

He crouched, touched the ground. It was rough, frozen hard as stone. There was no trace left, but he felt something anyway — a faint indentation, maybe just where a boot had pressed months ago. He pressed his palm there, as though taking its pulse.

Then he stood. Looked up. The sky was white-grey, that colour before snow, the kind of sky that pretends it’s infinite.

If they wanted to fake something, he thought, then the three of them got exactly what was coming. You make false stories, you reap what you sow. That’s how balance works.

He stayed there a while, until his legs ached. Then he turned back to his car — an old Civic, engine ticking in the cold — and drove off without looking back.

Behind him, the field lay empty. Yet from above, the frost carried the ghost of a pattern — faint, deliberate, as if the earth itself were trying to remember.
