It was a quiet Tuesday morning in the town of Pickleford, a place known for three things: the world's largest rubber duck, a mayor who only spoke in haiku, and an inexplicably high number of llamas.
Gary Bixby, a 47-year-old unemployed amateur magician (emphasis on amateur), was sitting in his mother's basement, eating a bowl of spaghetti with his hands (because he had put all the forks in the dishwasher and then forgot to turn it on). That’s when it hit him: he would become a legend.
Not by mastering magic. Not by getting a job. No. Gary would become famous by stealing something no one had ever dared to steal.
The mayor’s llama.
The llama, named Beyoncé, was the pride of Pickleford. She had won seven county fairs, starred in a yogurt commercial, and once spit on Elon Musk.
Gary knew the risks. Beyoncé was guarded 24/7 by a retired Navy SEAL named Captain Tickle, who suffered from chronic paranoia and had trained the llama in Krav Maga.
But Gary had a plan. A bad one.
Step 1: Dress up as a llama.
Step 2: Sneak into the llama pen at 3 a.m.
Step 3: Walk out with Beyoncé like nothing happened.
Simple.
Unfortunately, Gary’s llama costume was just a tan bathrobe, oven mitts, and a bicycle helmet with googly eyes glued on.
At 3 a.m., under cover of darkness (and questionable judgment), Gary approached the pen.
“Llama noises,” he whispered to himself, trying to blend in. “Mmmrrppp.”
Beyoncé looked unimpressed.
Captain Tickle, on the other hand, was in a tree nearby with night-vision goggles and a Super Soaker filled with Tabasco sauce. He had been expecting trouble ever since Beyoncé started receiving fan mail from a suspiciously persistent “Gary B.”
Gary reached the gate. It creaked open.
“Come on, Beyoncé. Let’s get famous,” he whispered, offering her a Pop-Tart.
She blinked once. Then headbutted him into a pile of manure.
Captain Tickle swooped down from the tree like a caffeinated bat. “NOT TODAY, MAGIC MAN!”
In the scuffle, Gary accidentally triggered the llama's training sequence, which involved Beyoncé doing a spinning roundhouse kick and screaming (yes, screaming) like a banshee.
The next morning, Gary woke up in the town jail wearing only one oven mitt and a sticker that said, "I got wrecked by a llama."
The mayor visited him shortly after.
“Gary, we all saw the footage,” he said, pausing to fold his haiku notebook.
“You are, without doubt—
The dumbest man in town. But—
Ten out of ten style.”
They made Gary the official Llama Wrangler (a mostly ceremonial role involving parades and not touching Beyoncé again, ever).
He still wears the bathrobe, though.
The end.
