With more stars long dead, the Witness lay down. They knew it might take a couple millennia before anyone could even realize what was happening.
The world was ending, and no one had the power to stop it.
The world was ending, yet everyone was still focused on their meaningless fights with their own kind.
The world was ending, and the humans are spearheading its doom.
Except, a certain twins were born today.
The Witness noticed a different light coming from the dying planet— a light that signified hope.
The twins were born to an average family. Their parents were middle class workers, their house has been passed down from generations and was almost already crumbling to dust— one big shake and it might go down.
The eldest was a happy baby boy, and his twin was a fierce baby girl. Elio and Luna, named from Helios, the sun, and Luna, the moon.
The Witness smiled bitterly and shed a single tear as They lay with the stars that night. They knew the twins were destined for greatness... or they might hasten the end of the world.
Years passed and the twins grew up to be strong and resilient. Elio was tall for his age, towering over his peers, and Luna was only a few inches behind. They both faced a lot of hardships, and was bullied a lot especially after both their parents died due to a road accident.
Elio went on to be a skilled mechanic, while Luna worked hard to become an entrepreneur. A few years passed and Elio got accepted as a mechanic at NASA, and Luna successfully launched her own technology-related business.
A few more years passed, and the Witness shed another tear as They watched the twins.
Elio, with his exemplary performance as a mechanic, went on to lead the creation of the best rocket which NASA sent to space to destroy an incoming enormous space rock headed directly towards Earth. Elio successfully saved the planet from ending that day.
Luna, a few hours after watching the success of her brother on television, went on to sign a contract with a businessman, which netted her millions of dollars, only to end up killing life on Earth slowly but surely over the course of a year. Her contract turned out to be the key to unlocking the worst biological weapon of all time.
The Witness, feeling lost and tired, closed Their eyes one last time. They knew there was no more hope to hold on to. No matter how hard They try, no matter what intervention They do, there's no escaping life.
After all, every good thing is met with an equal bad, and that's just the way of life.
