The Day I Thought I Had a Guy That Cared About Me
It was a freaky Friday when I first stumbled upon his profile on Facebook. Mxolisi was charming, his smile radiant, and I couldn't help but feel intrigued. But being me, I played it cool, pretending not to be interested in this modern-day Prince Charming. We chatted, exchanged memes, and slowly began to form a connection. Three months later, we were officially dating, and I thought I had found someone who genuinely cared.
Everything seemed perfect - until it wasn't.
The trouble started innocently enough. One afternoon, I mentioned to Mxolisi that a male friend of mine, Vuyo, had bought me a birthday gift. Little did I know that mentioning Vuyo's name would set off a chain of events I couldn't foresee. Mxolisi's expression changed, and I could see a storm brewing behind his eyes.
"He bought you a gift on his birthday?" he asked, his voice tight. I nodded, feeling a pit form in my stomach. I had only intended to be loyal, to be transparent, but Mxolisi's reaction was anything but calm. He seemed to shrink in size, his confidence crumbling.
"I can't believe you'd let him do that," he said, the disappointment palpable. Two weeks passed, each day marked by an increasing distance between us. Mxolisi decided to "leave it," but I could sense the tension simmering just beneath the surface.
Then came the babysitting gig. My older brother needed me to look after my twin nieces, and I gladly agreed, especially since I was battling a flu that made me feel like a zombie. Vuyo stopped by to keep me company, a kind gesture I welcomed. I figured a friend wouldn't hurt, especially when I was feeling so under the weather.
As I sank into the couch, exhaustion took over, and Vuyo suggested I take a nap while he entertained the girls. I left my phone with Hlelo, my niece, who was eager to play games. I drifted into a deep sleep, the weight of my illness finally letting go.
When I woke up, the house was quiet, the twins still snoozing. I reached for my phone and noticed a flurry of missed notifications from Mxolisi. But something was off - his chats were cleared, and I noticed I had been blocked and unblocked. Confusion clouded my mind.
Before I could process it all, my phone buzzed. It was a call from Mxolisi. I ignored it, refusing to take late-night calls. Instead, I checked my messages. His texts were filled with anger and confusion.
"Stop giving people your phone. Vuyo and I talked on WhatsApp. He sent me pictures of you sleeping on his chest."
My heart sank. The room felt suffocating. I couldn't believe what I was reading. Vuyo had taken a photo while I slept, and now it was being used as ammunition against me. Mxolisi had jumped to conclusions, believing I had betrayed him.
From that moment, Mxolisi ghosted me. I was left with the realization that the connection I thought we had was built on shaky ground. All the moments we shared, the laughter, the plans, were reduced to nothingness because of misunderstandings and misplaced trust.
Sitting in my living room, the twins still asleep, I reflected on how quickly things had unraveled. I had thought I found someone who cared, but it turned out I was just another puzzle piece in a game I didn't even know I was playing. That day, I learned that sometimes the people who seem to care the most can be the quickest to disappear.
