Levin Carrick woke at 5:52 a.m., precisely eight minutes before his phone alarm. He never slept through the night anymore. Something about the cold made his body keep time like an anxious watchman. He lay under the duvet a moment longer, gauging whether the chill had crept deeper overnight. It had. He exhaled a fog of breath and swung his legs over the side of the bed.

The bedsit was small but efficient, and that was how Levin liked it. One main room, a kitchenette tucked into the corner, and a bathroom the width of his outstretched arms. Everything he needed. Nothing he didn’t.

He filled the kettle just past the halfway mark — less water, less energy — and while it hissed to life, he opened the fridge and began the Monday ritual: meal prep.

On the scratched counter, he laid out seven plastic containers in a perfect row. Each would hold the same: a chicken thigh curry made from yellow-sticker meat he’d batch-cooked last night, boiled rice, and frozen mixed veg. No waste, no guesswork. He’d calculated the cost per portion at £1.12.

While spooning in the rice, he caught a flicker of motion in the corner of his eye. A pigeon. Same one, he assumed, that sat on the ledge most mornings. He didn’t know why, but its presence reassured him. Maybe because it, too, looked like it was surviving on precision and routine.

He cycled to work. Not because he enjoyed it — he didn’t — but because it was cheaper than the bus, healthier than doing nothing, and one more line on the spreadsheet that added up correctly.

His destination: the Barclaycard processing centre in Northampton. A featureless grey rectangle of a building surrounded by two dozen others just like it. Levin worked in “Customer Resolution Data Maintenance,” which sounded more important than it was. He updated contact records. Checked flagged accounts for duplicates. Monitored the “Returned Mail” folder for people who no longer existed — or at least, no longer wanted to be found.

£24,000 a year. Full time. Pension scheme. Tea room with a microwave that smelled permanently of burnt lasagne. All things considered, a good job. Which is why he didn’t complain. Or take sick days. Or speak more than necessary.

Lunch was a jam sandwich on white bread. He’d pre-packed it, of course — cheap, soft slices from the reduced section, jam from a jar bought on offer at Morrisons three weeks ago. He ate at his desk, headphones in, watching a YouTube video titled: “UK Economy on the Brink: Real Inflation is 18%”.

The presenter was American, nasal voice, buzzcut. But Levin appreciated the charts. The bluntness. It matched what he already felt in his bones: something was cracking beneath the surface. Wages frozen. Bills up. Fuel up. Rent up. Everything creeping.

“The system’s not broken,” the man on the video said. “It’s working exactly as designed — just not for you.”

Levin paused the video and stared at his spreadsheet. His monthly cost breakdown. He’d updated it last night. Every line was accurate. Every expense justified. He was doing everything right.

And yet…

That evening, back home, he pulled off his damp socks and put them near the radiator to dry — he’d only run the heat for one hour tonight. Just enough to take the edge off.

He opened another YouTube video while he reheated one of the meal tubs.

“Living on £2 a Day – UK Challenge!”
A young woman smiling into the camera, bouncy, full of pluck. She was holding lentils. They always had lentils.

Levin watched silently. He didn’t dislike her. But she had hope, and that made her a different species.

When the video ended, he didn’t click another. Instead, he turned the lights off, sat in the dark, and listened to the faint hum of his neighbour’s television through the wall.

He wasn’t suffering. Not really.

Not yet.

But he was balancing.

Always balancing.

And in Britain, in 2025, that was the same as falling.

2e:Tcf7,

Levin knew something was coming. You could feel it in Britain, like a draft under the door.

Prices rising. Faces tense. People lingering longer in the reduced aisle, hands hovering over yellow stickers like they were scratchcards.

The letter arrived on a Monday morning. White envelope, bold print: Notice of Rent Adjustment – Effective March 1st.

He opened it before taking off his coat. The numbers were brutal.

“Your monthly rent will increase from £750 to £950. This new rate reflects local market conditions…”

He stopped reading. £200. A 20%+ percent hike.

He stood in his bedsit, coat still zipped, the cold from outside now spreading inside in a different way.

That evening, he added the new figure to his spreadsheet. His carefully balanced formula — the one he'd tweaked for five years — stuttered.

Rent: £950

Council Tax (pending rise): £167

Energy: £160

Water: £55

Food: £200

Transport: £60

Phone/Internet: £50

Other: £100 to £130

It didn’t work. Not even with the razor-thin margins he was used to. He cleared around £1650 a month. Now his costs added up to £1750 a month.

His savings were already down to £340, and he refused to let them go below £250. That was Levin's personal red line. Cross that, and it meant panic mode.

He didn’t panic. Not visibly. Not yet.

But he did sit very still, for a very long time.

The next morning at Barclaycard, he ran through records in the Customer Resolution Data Maintenance team — a glorified name for chasing down misspellings and stale addresses. The same four applications had bounced from his queue all week: duplicated forms, a missing postcode, a dead email address.

At 10:46 a.m., Dean strolled past his desk.

“Morning, Levin. Got your reports yesterday — top work, mate. Keep it going.”

Levin nodded. Smiled, briefly. Said thanks.

It wasn’t much — but it was enough to sting.

Because as of that morning, he was already planning another spreadsheet. One that didn’t have room for failure. Or for rent at £950. Or, soon, for shame.

He cycled home slowly that night, cold air biting through the fleece under his jacket. Chain clacking, brakes squealing — he needed to oil them again.

He passed the same Co-op he always passed, and caught himself glancing at the cameras. Not because he was planning anything. Just because something in him had started thinking differently. In margins. In micro-gains. In exit routes.

He turned away, disgusted at himself.

At home, he boiled rice and scrambled eggs — dinner in one pan. Salted it. Ate it at the counter. Didn’t bother heating the room.

Didn’t turn the radio on.

Before bed, he updated his notes.

“£200 increase in rent.
Council tax projected rise 8%
Energy up again.
Savings goal: £50/month (impossible after rent rise)
Investigate side hustles?”

He opened YouTube:

“5 Items to Resell from Charity Shops – Start with £10!”

He stared at it for a long time.

Didn’t click.

2f:Tb2d,

The council tax hike was confirmed on a Tuesday morning.

“Your new monthly payment will be £187.33”

Levin stared at the figure. Not round. Not even. Just enough to feel vindictive.

He added it to the spreadsheet, deleting the old value with a sigh. Then he opened his email, and there it was: “Your new car insurance renewal quote is ready.”

He clicked it, already bracing.

“This year’s premium: £742.10. That’s a 10% increase.”

No claims. No points. No change.

Just more.

“Broken Britain is writing to me,” he muttered. “One envelope at a time.”

He reloaded the spreadsheet.

Reran the numbers.

This time, the shortfall was clear. He was losing £168 per month.

Later that day, at Barclaycard, he processed address changes and stale phone numbers with robotic precision. No one noticed his silence — Levin was always quiet. But inside, the maths had taken over. Every tap of the keyboard echoed with figures. Rent. Tax. Fuel. Bread.

At lunch, he didn’t eat. Just drank a lukewarm tap water from his flask and stared at the floor tiles.

He thought of a phrase he’d once heard on a YouTube documentary:

“The illusion of middle-class life on a working-class income.”

He felt that like a bruise.

That evening, he cycled to the Co-op as the sun dipped behind the tower blocks.

The sky was a washed-out orange, the kind that made everything look cheaper.

He locked up his bike and walked in with his reusable bag, but he wasn’t just shopping.

He was scanning. Not the shelves — the ceiling. The corners. The blind spots.

Where were the cameras? Where did the security guard hover?

Did the staff ever leave the till unmanned?

He caught himself.

“What are you scoping for?”
“You’re not going to do anything.”

He shook the thought off. Moved to the back where the yellow-stickered items lived.

He grabbed a small tin of tomatoes, reduced to 39p, and some instant coffee sachets.

Then he stopped. Held a packet of green tea powder in his hand. A six-pack of slim sachets. £2.60. He turned it over, looked at the nutritional info, the barcode, the weight. Too light to trip a sensor.

He put it back.

He left the shop with his paid items.

Walked past the security guard.

Felt nothing but cold.

At home, he ate rice and scrambled egg.

He didn’t turn on the heating. He didn’t watch any videos.

He sat with his spreadsheet, now colour-coded red and amber.

He added a note at the bottom:

“Shortfall: ~£168/month (projected)
Options: ???”

He stared at the question marks.

Then closed the laptop and sat in the dark again.

30:Td10,

The flat smelled like steam and overcooked rice. Levin had left the lid on too long.

He didn’t care.

He was sitting in front of his laptop, half-eaten dinner beside him, staring at the screen with the same look he’d once reserved for unpaid bills.

YouTube was open. Search bar filled with the hopeful lie:

"UK side hustles 2025 - earn extra cash"

The results were a digital graveyard:

“AI Took My Job: The Death of Online Work”

“Print-on-Demand is Dead in 2025 – Here's Why”

“Don’t Bother With Fiverr Unless You’re a Machine”

“Passive Income Is a Lie (Here’s My Burnout Story)”

He clicked through one after another.

A man explaining how AI now writes the ad copy.

A woman showing how stock photo sites were oversaturated.

A teenager ranting about how he made £9 in six weeks selling eBooks.

Every thumbnail a face. Every face strained. Every voice flat.

Levin sat there, something in his chest sinking without splash.

He’d always told himself there were backups.

That if things got bad, he’d hustle. Flip something. Learn a skill.

Everyone said there were options.

But now the options were dead links, and the gig economy had become just another queue he was already too far back in.

He closed the tab.

Didn’t eat the rest of his rice.

Didn’t wash the plate.

He got up, put on his coat, and walked to the Co-op.

It was quiet inside. Fluorescent lighting. Two old women by the milk. A lad stocking shelves at the back.

No security guard at the door tonight. Budget cuts, probably.

Levin walked with purpose, but not to shop. He wasn’t thinking about dinner.

He was just trying to feel different.

He stood in front of the hot drinks aisle and stared at a packet of Matcha sachets.

Slim. £2.60.

Then something strange happened.

His arm moved.

His coat pocket opened.

The packets went in.

He didn’t think it.

He watched it.

8 packets of Matcha. 4 in each pocket. 20 quids' worth.

It was like watching a stranger move your own limbs. No fear. No thrill.

Just blank inevitability, like flushing a toilet or closing a drawer.

He grabbed a tin of chopped tomatoes and a bag of oats — paid for those.

Card machine. Beep. Bag. Exit.

The whole thing took four minutes.

Walking home, he felt the sachets pressing lightly against his leg.

Weightless. Silent.

He didn’t speed up. Didn’t sweat.

Didn’t feel victorious.

Didn’t feel guilty.

What he felt was:

"Well. That was easy."

Back at the flat, he laid the stolen sachets on the counter like evidence.

Then made a cup. Matcha, hot water, powdered milk.

It tasted bitter. He drank it all.

He stared at the cup afterwards, long after it was empty.

Then rinsed it, wiped it, and dried it carefully.

He updated the spreadsheet.

Didn’t write anything about the tea.

Just a new note at the bottom:

“Extra food sourced. £20.80 saved.”

Then, finally, he added something new.

“You do what you have to do.”

31:Td08,

The morning started better than most.

Dean waved him into the glass office before his coat was even off.

“Levin, sit down, mate. Got something for you.”

Levin sat, nervous by default, but Dean was smiling — genuinely smiling.

“You’ve been solid. Steady. I’ve already spoken to Projects — they’ve got a vacancy in Audit Review. Bit more technical. Bit more scrutiny, but you’re built for it. I’ve recommended you directly.”

Levin blinked.

“Wait. You mean…?”

“It’s yours if you want it. Thirty six grand a year. Start next month. Bit of a learning curve, but honestly? You’ve earned it.”

For a moment, Levin just sat there. His brain felt like it had stepped outside for a smoke.

“I… thank you. Thank you, Dean. I didn’t think I’d…”

“Don’t thank me. Thank your work.”

The rest of the day passed in a strange glow. He typed faster. Smiled, briefly, when someone made a joke near the break room. Didn’t even flinch when he saw an email from HR — just an onboarding link for the new role.

He left work with a rare lightness. The wind felt less sharp. The walk to his bike shorter.

He almost forgot what he’d done.

That evening, he allowed himself a minor luxury: real chicken breast from the Co-op. No yellow sticker. Full price. He made a curry from scratch, not bulk — just one portion. No spreadsheet entry. No calorie count.

He watched a video about how people from the 70s lived on a single income and bought homes. He laughed — out loud, actually. Not in a bitter way. Just the absurdity of it.

He went to bed at 10 p.m., belly full, feeling something he hadn’t felt in years:

Possible.

At 7:43 a.m. the next morning, just as he was lacing his shoes, the knock came.

Three short raps. Official rhythm. Not a neighbour. Not a parcel.

He opened the door.

Two uniforms. One taller, taking the lead.

“Mr. Carrick?”

“Yes?”

“We’d like to speak to you about an incident that occurred on the 14th at the Co-op on Lings Road. May we come in?”

He didn’t remember sitting down. One of them was talking. The other opened a tablet.

“CCTV shows you placing approximately eight packs of green tea powder into both jacket pockets. Estimated value: £20.80”

The figure seemed absurdly specific.

“This is a voluntary interview. You’re not under arrest. We just need to clarify your intentions.”

“Intentions?” Levin said. “I don’t… I didn’t…”

He stopped.

He remembered the way it felt — light, automatic. Almost outside of him.

They asked him if he understood the caution. He said yes.

“We’ll treat this as a community resolution. It’s not a conviction, but it will be visible on certain background checks. The Co-Op have agreed not to press further if you reimburse them for the items.”

The words felt like someone sanding the bone.

After they left, Levin sat in silence.

He didn’t move for a long time.

Eventually, he opened the spreadsheet. His fingers hovered over the keyboard.

He didn’t type anything.

Finally, he muttered to the room:

“Did I miss a camera?”

32:Tce9,

Levin was called into Dean’s office just after lunch.

There was no smile this time. No energy. Just a stillness that felt unnatural.

Dean looked like he hadn’t slept.

“Close the door, mate.”

Levin sat down. The air felt heavy.

Dean took a breath.

“Right. I’m gonna get straight to it. HR ran your background check — standard thing. Always do it for Audit roles.”

He paused. Levin said nothing.

“There’s… a caution. Community level. Theft of around twenty quid. Co-op. Tea sachets.”

Levin’s stomach folded in on itself.

He didn’t say yes, or no, or I’m sorry. He just looked down at the corner of the desk and blinked.

Dean pressed on, voice tight.

“Mate, they were ready to let you go. I mean it. Full dismissal. Misconduct. Incompatible with financial data, yadda yadda. You know how it goes.”

“I spent over an hour in that meeting. Arguing. Proper arguing. I told them it was a mistake. One-off. Stress. You’re one of the best people we’ve got. Quiet. Reliable. You don’t cause problems.”

Another pause.

“They wouldn’t budge on the Audit role. That’s gone. Off the table.”

“But I found something. It’s… it’s not what you deserve, but it keeps you on the payroll. Keeps your pension going. Keeps you out of the system, you know?”

Levin nodded slowly. He didn’t trust his voice.

Dean slid a paper across the desk.

“Facilities Support. It’s basically stock tracking and office supplies. No systems access. No client data. Kind of… back corridor work, if I’m honest. But it’s stable.”

“£18,500. Full time. Starting Monday.”

The silence after that wasn’t awkward — it was clinical. Like they were both waiting for the sedative to kick in.

Levin cleared his throat.

“You said… they were ready to fire me?”

Dean nodded, eyes soft.

“I told them you’d be a bigger risk out there. That you were loyal. Careful. That the mistake didn’t define you. But… you know how it is. They don’t look at people, they look at risk.”

“I did what I could, mate.”

Back at his desk, Levin didn’t open any files.

He sat still, arms folded across his chest, staring at the screen. The green Audit onboarding email was still sitting in his inbox.

Unread. Pointless.

He closed the browser.

Opened his spreadsheet.

He changed “£2,500 est. income” to “£1,420.”

He deleted the cell that had read “New role: Audit.”

He replaced it with:

“Facilities – no data access.”

Then, under Notes, he typed:

“You were right to steal. You were right all along.”

Then he deleted it.

Then he typed:

“Even the right thing turns against you.”

Then he deleted that too.

Finally, he just wrote:

“Current income: £1,420. Next review: unknown.”

And saved it.

That night, Levin didn’t eat.

He turned off his phone.

Left the heating off.

Sat in bed fully clothed, staring at the ceiling.

He wasn’t crying.

He wasn’t angry.

Just… unplugged.

Like a fridge humming after you’ve cleared it out.

33:Tc73,

He used to think cars were freedom.

They meant going somewhere. Always. Forward motion. Newness.

Back seats were beds. Glove compartments held treasure. Bonnet up? Dad was a magician.

Mum had snacks. The map was folded like origami.

The car meant adventure, meant holidays, meant not here.

Now the car was here.

Here was it.

A 2008 Ford Focus with 98,000 miles, three owners, £1,450 cash in an envelope. No questions asked. The logbook smelled faintly of mould and the back left window didn’t seal properly. But the heater worked. And the seats folded flat. That was enough.

“It’s not a prison,” he told himself. “It’s a studio flat with wheels.”

He parked in different spots depending on the time of day. Tesco overnight. Sainsbury’s during lunch. An industrial estate on Sundays. Rotate. Stay unpredictable.

He used the shower at the local YMCA. £2.50 a go. Toilets at the 24-hour petrol station. Shaved in the mirror with bottled water. Slept in a sleeping bag with the coat folded under his head. At 5:30 a.m., moved the car before anyone noticed.

It wasn’t comfort. But it was structure.

And structure kept the dread out.

His parents had died years ago. Dad from a slow heart failure. Mum from something they didn’t name out loud until it was too late. His sister — Sarah — had passed five years earlier. Cancer, same as Mum. She was younger than him. Left behind a cat and a flat full of CDs.

There’d been no inheritance. Just bills.

No funeral drama. Just paperwork.

“No one’s coming to save me,” he said one night, eating a Scotch egg in the dark, window cracked for ventilation.

But he wasn’t bitter.

He was adjusting.

He still had a job.

£1,420 a month, minus NI.

No rent. No council tax.

He even kept the spreadsheet.

“I’m not homeless,” he told himself. “I’m car-homed. It’s not the same.”

Food was the worst part.

No cooker. No fridge. No microwave.

Nothing hot unless he paid for it. So he lived off Greggs sausage rolls, Poundland pasties, meal deals if they were yellow-stickered.

He considered buying a gas burner. Go full camper mode. But something in him recoiled at the thought. Like that would be admitting it was permanent.

He kept the car clean.

Dusted the dash. Shook out crumbs.

Used wet wipes on the seats.

“If it looks like home, maybe I’ll forget it isn’t.”

Most nights he parked by the edge of a quiet park. No CCTV. No traffic. He kept a paperback in the glovebox. Sometimes he’d read two pages before sleep took him.

Other nights, he’d just stare at the windscreen, watching condensation bloom. Listening to the occasional footsteps go past.

He wasn’t crying. He wasn’t lost. He was just...learning.

Learning how to survive inside a space that once meant forward.

Now it meant pause.

“At least I’m not paying rent,” he muttered, chewing cold chicken wings from a £2.99 deal box.

“At least I’m not in debt.”

He repeated it like a spell.

34:Tdef,

He bought a cheap phone mount from Amazon.

Clipped it to the dash. Took a deep breath.

“Hey guys! Welcome back to Levin In My Car — where we make the most of living on four wheels!”

His voice sounded like someone else’s.

Like a man trying to sell himself a life he didn't believe in.

“Today I’m showing you how I store my food, how I stay warm at night, and how I manage hygiene on the go!”

He smiled. He showed the fold-up toothbrush. The packet of wet wipes. The bottle of water he kept for shaving.

He showed his sleeping setup — blanket, coat, back support cushion.

He tried to laugh.

“And no, it’s not glamorous — but it’s better than debt, right? Right?”

He uploaded the video on library Wi-Fi.

Waited.

Six views.

Then eleven.

One like. One comment.

His heart lifted for a second. Then he read it.

“Boring voice mate. Seen this a million times. Do something original.”

He stared at the comment for a long time.

Didn’t reply.

Didn’t delete it either.

Just closed the app and put the phone in the glovebox.

That night, he didn’t record anything. He sat in the car, heater off, breath fogging the glass. The battery was running low, and so was he.

Work wasn’t better.

Facilities Support was a forgotten corridor at Barclaycard. A limbo department with no windows and too much fluorescent light. He spent most of his time counting stationery. Moving toner from cupboard to cupboard. Logging supplies into a spreadsheet that nobody read.

People looked at him differently now.

Not cruel. Not hostile. Just… sideways.

As if something had been whispered.

Maybe they’d seen the police at reception. Maybe HR leaked something. Maybe someone had seen him brushing his teeth in the Tesco toilet.

He couldn’t prove it. But he felt it. The polite nods were slower. The email replies shorter.

Once, someone in the break room said, “Where do you even live, mate? You never talk about your place”. It was said like a joke. But it wasn’t funny.

He tried to start another video the next weekend.

Different tone this time. Honest. Raw.

“This isn’t easy,” he said, into the lens. “It’s cold. It’s lonely. I haven’t had a proper night’s sleep in weeks.”

“I’m trying. I’m not lazy. I work full time. I keep things clean. I stay polite. I budget like mad.”

“But… it’s not working. None of it’s working.”

He watched the footage back.

Looked too old. Too tired.

His eyes looked like they'd been left out in the rain.

He deleted it.

Later that night, parked in a cul-de-sac near the bypass, he opened the YouTube Studio app. The channel had thirteen subscribers. One was him.

He looked at the one comment again.

“Boring voice mate. Seen this a million times. Do something original.”

He closed the app.

Powered off the phone.

That night, he didn’t sleep well. Again. The cold was biting now. The car windows rattled in the wind. His back ached. His knees locked. The world outside the glass felt like a separate country.

And in his mind, the spreadsheet flickered like an old film reel.

Numbers, rows, deductions.

Costs that didn’t care how he felt.

“Even the side hustles need a side hustle,” he muttered.

He laughed once, bitterly. Then pulled the blanket tighter.

He was shivering.

35:Te2d,

His father’s hands always smelled of Swarfega.

Even after the second wash, even after dinner — it lingered. Oil and metal and that green, gritty soap that scraped the dirt off like sandpaper.

He used to come in from the driveway wiping his hands with an old tea towel. A Rover Haynes manual in one hand, a socket wrench in the other, the car bonnet still open. He never raised his voice. Never ran late. Never called in sick.

He fixed things. That’s what men did.

The house never felt poor. Not rich, but never uncertain. Mortgage got paid. Food showed up. Heat came on when it was cold. There were crisps in the cupboard. Lemonade in the garage.

And Dad fixed things.

The fence. The gutter. The kettle. The telly got a slap if it rolled. The aerial got a wiggle. The world could be mended, one weekend at a time.

Levin stares at his own hands now. They’re not much older than his dad’s were back then. But they look it. Dry, cracked, faint smell of stale pastry.

He hasn’t fixed anything in years.

Not really.

You don’t fix spreadsheets. You don’t fix risk management roles. You don’t fix poverty. You navigate it. You endure it.

He remembers watching his dad at the wheel. Cigarette in the ashtray. Elbow on the window ledge. Driving back from Texas Homecare or Homebase. The boot full of something useful.

He looked so sure of himself.

Not smug. Just settled. Like he had a deal with life.

Put in the work. Get the rewards.

Raise the kids. Own the home. Die in your chair watching the news.

Levin remembers thinking: that’ll be me, one day.

It wasn’t.

There was no deal.

There was effort. Plenty of that.

Careful planning. Caution. Prudence.

He followed all the rules. Cut coupons. Made spreadsheets.

And for what?

A car full of bin liners. A toothbrush in the glove box. A polite demotion and a comment on YouTube calling him boring. Cold mornings. Wet socks. Cheap coffee. No one asking if he’s okay.

His dad never talked about dreams. Not really. But Levin suspected he had some.

And maybe that’s what men really do.

They bury their dreams somewhere behind the shed, next to the bag of cement and the tins of old paint.

But now even that feels noble.

There was a shed. There was a bag of cement.

There was room for dreaming, even if you didn’t use it.

Now?

Now it’s gig work and credit checks.

Now it’s ten-hour shifts and hunting yellow stickers in the supermarket.

Now it’s trying not to cry when the rent goes up again.

And eating in your car.

And deleting the comment.

And counting coins in your lap while the engine idles.

He thought about that last conversation with Dean.

The one where Dean said “I did what I could.”

Levin believed him.

That was the worst part. He believed him.

And now, as he watches condensation pool on the inside of the windscreen, he realises something new. Something clear:

“I’m not part of this world anymore.”

He says it out loud. Calmly. Resolutely.

Not angry. Not sad.

Just… done.

He remembers his father once fixed a broken toaster using a fork and some pliers. Took the whole thing apart on the kitchen table. When it finally popped up toast again, Dad smiled and said,

“Nothing’s ever really broken. Just waiting to be understood.”

Levin wanted to believe that. For years.

But not tonight.

36:Tfa9,

Levin spent most of his days in the car, scrolling through job sites. He still had his phone, though the screen was cracked and the charging port only worked at certain angles. He kept a power bank topped up from the sockets at the YMCA gym — shower, shave, plug in, walk out like it was normal.

His CV hadn’t changed in years.

The layout was dated. The “Key Skills” section still included words like detail-oriented and team player.

But he applied anyway.

Customer service. Admin assistant. Stockroom. Even driving jobs — though he was starting to ration petrol.

Every morning, he'd refresh his inbox. Every day, a new wave of the same corporate phrasing:

“We regret to inform you.”
“Unfortunately.”
“Despite your experience.”

Most didn’t even bother with that. Just silence. Just the no you had to figure out yourself.

He went back to the old bedsit once. Not because he missed it — but just in case a job offer had come by post. He stood outside the front door longer than he meant to, then rang the bell. The new tenant — mid-20s, trackies, wary eyes — opened without a word. Levin explained. Quickly. Respectfully. Just checking for any missed letters. Nothing more. The man didn’t speak. Just stared at him with a half-step forward that made the message clear:

“You don’t live here anymore.”

Levin nodded and left without looking back.

He tried for help.

Called three charities.

Two said they’d “review capacity” and call him back. They didn’t.

The third suggested filling out a web form he could barely navigate on his phone.

He went to a halfway home near the canal. It looked rough but stable — like it could hold a roof over your head, even if it leaked a little. He explained his situation to a man at the door. Shaved head. Clipboard. Voice like callused hands.

“So… you’re in your car, yeah?” the man said.

“Yeah. Just… for now. Until I can get something again.”

“Mate, honestly? That’s not the worst. Loads of people doing that now. Get yourself a high-tog sleeping bag and you’re golden.”

Golden.

Levin said thank you, turned around, and walked off.

He threw the folded leaflet into a bin two streets over.

He didn’t remember what it said.

His notes app was full of job links now. He had a running tally. 95 applications this week. No interviews. He started cutting and pasting the same cover letter to save battery.

"Motivated individual seeking full-time opportunity."

He no longer believed it, but the words were clean.

In the evenings, he’d sit in the car park behind an Aldi and sip bottled water like it was whiskey.

He started using Gregg’s as a co-working space. Coffee, plug socket, Wi-Fi, pasty. The closest thing he had to an office. There was a plywood shelf bolted to the window, pretending to be a desk. Three metal stools — one always wonky, the kind that spins a little when no one's touching it. A laminated sign above: “15 MINUTE SEATING LIMIT DURING BUSY PERIODS”. It was always a busy period. Levin sat there like a freelancer with nowhere to go, tea cooling in a paper cup. He’d angle his cracked phone toward the street like it was a 17" monitor. It wasn’t an office. But if he imagined hard enough — and ignored the smell of pasties and bleach — it passed.

He thought about asking Dean for help again — maybe a side project, or extra hours. But he didn’t. Because he already knew what the look on Dean’s face would be. Not anger. Not disappointment. Just pity, softened by helplessness. And Levin couldn’t take that look. Not now.

The car smelled of dry sweat and plastic and supermarket bread.

He slept curled in the back with the phone in his hand.

Still refreshing the email.

Still checking.

Still trying.

37:Ta7c,

The Ford Focus was found in a gravel layby on the A149, just outside Great Yarmouth.

A passing dog walker noticed it had been there for two days, unmoved. Condensation on the inside of the windows. No sign of movement.

Police were called. The door was unlocked.

Inside, they found a man, mid-50s, deceased. No signs of struggle. No damage to the vehicle.

Empty blister packs on the passenger seat.

A bottle of water. A half-eaten pasty on the dash.

Sleeping bag in the back. Receipts found in the glovebox showed he'd purchased packets of paracetamol and over-the-counter sedatives from several different chemists in the days leading up to his death. Individually, the quantities wouldn’t raise suspicion. But together, they painted a quieter, more deliberate picture. He’d spaced them out. Different shops. Different towns.

ID was present.

Levin Carrick, born 1972. Address listed as a flat he’d vacated months prior.

CCTV and ANPR records later confirmed the car’s route over the previous week. It had stopped briefly in Blackpool. Then Skegness. Then, finally, Great Yarmouth.

A pattern emerged — not random, not routine. Just three names.

The coroner’s report listed the cause as overdose.

Likely intentional, though not explicitly stated.

Toxicology confirmed high concentrations of over-the-counter sedatives and painkillers.

Time of death estimated at 2 to 3 days prior to discovery.

Next of kin: none listed.

No active will. No property.

Bank account showed limited activity.

Final transaction: £11.38 at a service station — sandwich, drink, paracetamol.

A file was created.

Barclaycard was notified via HR liaison. A standard bereavement letter was issued. Desk cleared. Items inventoried. A few pens, a mug, a faded high-vis vest. The Facilities Manager authorised a donation to a local homelessness charity. £50. Internal gesture.

An email circulated briefly:

“We are saddened to hear of the passing of our colleague, Levin Carrick. He will be remembered for his years of service and quiet dedication.”

The car was towed. A local wrecker yard confirmed it unclaimed after 28 days. It was stripped and scrapped.

Back at the coroner’s office, the report was uploaded to the national database. Cause of death: toxicity. Contributory factors: unknown.

Somewhere in a dusty cabinet, a brown envelope holds Levin’s personal effects.

Wallet. Watch. Phone.

The phone wallpaper is a childhood photo.

A car park. A sunny day.

A boy in the back seat of a Rover, smiling.
