The ocean in Jamaica didn't just shimmer-it pulsed. Layla sat on the edge of the beach, her feet buried in warm sand, her phone silent beside her. The breeze teased her braids and tasted like mango and salt, but even paradise couldn't numb the ache in her chest.
Eli hadn't called. Not since the fight.
The words still echoed in her head, that bitter heat between them. She had stormed out with nothing but her carry-on and a broken heart, convinced that space would give her clarity. But now, on this stunning island, surrounded by paradise, all she felt was hollow.
That was until she met Jace.
He was a stranger in the same resort, someone she bumped into at the bar when her glass slipped from her hand. "You okay?" he had asked, eyes kind, voice warm like spiced rum.
At first, Layla brushed him off. But Jace was persistent in a gentle, non-pushy way. He didn't ask too many questions. Just listened. He'd sit with her by the water, play cards under the palm trees, and share stories that made her forget how much she missed being understood.
She never told him everything-not about Eli, not about the argument-but he seemed to sense the weight she carried anyway.
"Can I tell you something weird?" Jace said one night, under a sky littered with stars.
Layla smiled, sipping her rum punch. "Only if it's really weird."
He grinned. "Sometimes I think certain people... show up in our lives not to stay, but to help us heal. Like the universe sends placeholders until we're ready to face what's broken."
Layla froze. Her heart clenched. Was she the broken one? Or was Jace?
She didn't sleep that night.
The next morning, she stood by the sea, watching the sunrise paint everything gold. She thought about Eli. The love they had. The pain. The fear of losing herself. And then, she thought about Jace.
She realized something that felt like magic and mourning at once.
Jace wasn't a rebound. He was a reflection. He mirrored everything she'd forgotten about herself-her softness, her laughter, her power. And through his presence, she didn't fall in love with him...
She fell back in love with her.
That afternoon, she found Jace one last time by the pool.
"You were right," she said, touching his hand gently. "Some people are meant to help us heal."
His eyes searched hers. "And some people are meant to go back to what they're ready to fight for."
She nodded. "I'm going home."
As the plane lifted off the runway, Layla looked out the window at the sparkling coastline of Jamaica fading below. She didn't know what would happen with Eli. But she knew who she was again.
And that was the beginning of everything.
