“You look exactly the same,” I managed to say, after being constantly ignored, but he didn’t react, his hazel eyes glued on his phone.
“Hmm…” he gave a cold response, making me feel as if we had just met for the first time. There has been an awkward silence between us since we met. I chose this place to meet him because it used to be his favourite coffee shop.
I tucked a hair strand behind my ear, before my eyes caught a cute puppy, sitting at the front table with an old man looking to be in his sixties or seventies.
He was eating cookies while sharing it with the puppy. Maybe it would be an amazing gift for Allie, as my little sister loves dogs.
“But you have changed…” now his eyes were looking into mine. “It’s true that success changes you,” his tone was more like he was taunting, now I could see where was this going.
“True…” I agreed, forcing a small smile. “So, what are you up to now, still in your family business?”
He adjusted himself to make his posture a little more stable, “It’s not just a family business, I know for people like you it is just a small business of selling lamps, but for me it’s keeping the light of soul illuminated.”
He shifted his body more on the table by keeping his hands crossed on it, “Most importantly it keeps me attached with my roots unlike some people who forget everyone for their so-called success!” His tone in the last words was much more cold and sharp.
He was staring at me as if he wanted me to say something. My breathing was getting heavy.
I sighed, “I’ve already apologised three times, how many times I have to say that I’m sorry?” my voice was shaking and so were my hands.
“Three times! A mistake that you repeated doing for ten years cannot be forgiven by apologising for just three times,” he snapped, his voice getting louder after every word.
I was keeping my mouth shut because the fault is mine and I have no right to defend myself.
“Ten years ago, I loved a girl, she had dreams, ambitions and my dream was only to make her dreams come true, but I never knew that after spending the most beautiful years together, one day she’ll forget me just for the damn success!” He was not yelling, but his eyes were showing the fire burning in his heart, making me tearful.
He closed his eyes, running a hand through his hair.
“I felt sad when she cried and happiest when she laughed and also today, I can’t see that girl crying, that too because of me…” he said, his eyes looking a little greasy before he quickly got up and left without saying a word, leaving me wondering if I’d be able to get him back or he has gone more away.
