Iwas sleeping in a flower bed last winter after being pushed out the
attic window of my girlfriend’s –make that former girlfriend’s -
parents house. I had a thorn in my side and in other places. After awaking,
I laid there for awhile thinking this bed is so comfortable and I felt like a part of
nature. The fresh aroma of flowers, the soft cool breeze…
I stood up, slapped the dirt and debris from my clothes, began walking
down the sidewalk. I became aware of a ladybug in my hair. I released her from my scraggly mop.
It came into mind that today is Thursday. Thirsty. I was thirsty. I went
to a park and sipped the dew off a walnut tree. I took a walnut, cracked
it open and ate it. I ate a couple more to sate my hunger. I sat on a bench.
It was too early for anybody else to be there. I began reading the names
and curses etched onto the bench. I thought back to a time a year ago when me and my girl were the center of attention, dancing at a small concert
venue. We really impressed the crowd and we danced out the door in order
to leave while we were the hot thing. We ran across the boulevard and Kathy’s shoe broke and she slid on the street face first. She laughed, unhurt. We
got into my car then noticed a donut shop and got back out of the car and
went into the store. It was quiet in there and brightly lit. Staring at
the donut case, I was unsteady. We had been drinking. We got half a dozen
pink donuts and went back to the car and stuffed ourselves.
Now back to the park bench. Kathy came over and sat on my lap. I
reminded her about the night we were dancing stars.
It was peaceful. We got up and walked toward a donut store.
