Maryam's Life Struggle - Part 1

Maryam is a 15-year-old school-going girl. Along with studying, she does all the household chores. That's because both her parents work outside - her father does laundry and her mother works as a housemaid. Maryam also has a younger brother named Muntasir.

Still, Maryam's mother scolds her all day long and even beats her sometimes.

---

Mother: "Maryam, a marriage proposal has come for you. They're coming to see you."

Maryam (in her mind): 'I want to study, I want to become something big, I don't want to get married.'

Her mother called out to her in front of the guests.

Mother: "Maryam, come here!"

Maryam went in front of them a bit shyly. Her sisters-in-law had dressed her up nicely, but there was no smile on Maryam's face.

---

Groom's mother: "Where is the girl? How far has she studied?"

Mother: "This is Maryam. She has studied up to class nine."

Groom's mother (arrogantly): "What's the use of studying so much? Girls are meant to learn housework."

Mother (nodding in agreement): "You're right. That's why we want her to get married."

Groom's mother: "We like her. Does she know cooking?"

Mother: "Yes, she can do all household chores."

Groom's mother: "Alright, let's see how she walks."

Maryam walked in front of them.

Groom's mother: "She looks beautiful. She knows cooking too. Then shall we fix the date?"

Mother: "Okay. How can I refuse such a good proposal?"

---

After the guests left, Maryam asked:

Maryam: "Ma, you said they would come gradually. Why so suddenly now?"

Mother (strictly): "Be quiet! Your marriage is happening now."

Maryam (crying): "I want to study. I don't want to get married."

Mother: "Your wedding is this Friday. Now go do your work."
