Hey everyone, it is just me again with a new subject, Numbers, and now we get to something I have been waiting to talk about for a very long time, and I am actually smiling as I write this because numbers were one of the first things I learned that did not look like puzzles at all. They looked boring. There, I said it. Little lines and circles on a page do not exactly scream adventure. Nobody ever held up a number seven and said, "Look, Jules, a mystery!" But later I found out they were solutions in disguise.
You see, people think numbers are just for counting, or school tests, or keeping track of money and time. They think numbers sit quietly on paper and mind their own business. I learned very early that numbers tell stories. They show patterns. They point at things and whisper, "That right there is different." They can even show you where something is wrong when everything else looks perfectly fine.
When I was little, before I even thought about books as secrets, I was taught to count. That sounds normal, right? But the way I was taught was not just to say one, two, three, and move on. My mom would say, "Jules, why do we count?" and I would answer, "So we know how many." Then she would smile. Mom always smiled when she was about to completely rearrange my thinking. She would say, "No, we count so we know what is missing."
That stayed with me.
You see, if you have ten apples and now you only have nine apples, you do not just know you have nine. You know one disappeared. You know something changed. You know, there is now a mystery where there was not one before.
That is the first thing numbers teach you. They tell you when something is not there.
So right from the start, numbers were not just about how many things I had. They were about finding what was missing. And if you remember from the reading chapter, that is the first rule I learned. Always look for what is not there.
Numbers do that better than almost anything else.
Let me give you something simple. Imagine you walk into a room and there are five chairs around a table. You come back later, and there are still five chairs. Nothing looks wrong. But if there were supposed to be six, and you only remembered five, your mind might never catch it. However, if you counted them before, the numbers tell you the truth.
Something is gone.
Numbers do not lie. People do. Eyes miss things. Memories get fuzzy. But numbers will sit there all day long and quietly tell you that something changed.
That is the first way numbers help solve puzzles. They show you what changed.
Now, let me tell you another thing I learned as I got older. Numbers also show patterns. And once you can see patterns, solutions start getting easier and easier.
Think about time for a second. Morning comes, then afternoon, then night. Then it happens again. That is a pattern. Days turn into weeks. Weeks turn into months. Months turn into years. Patterns.
Even your own life has numbers in it. How old are you? How long does it take to walk somewhere? How many steps are there from your bed to your kitchen?
I know that last one sounds silly, but I actually know things like that. Karl laughs at me all the time because I somehow know exactly how many steps there are between places. I honestly do not know when I counted them. I just did. I also know exactly how many cabinets are in our kitchen and which one has the good snacks. See? Numbers can be useful.
Your brain counts things all day long, and when something breaks that pattern, you notice. Maybe not right away. Maybe not consciously. But something inside you says, "Wait a second."
If you always leave for work at seven-thirty and one day the street is empty when it is normally full, that number has changed. If a store that always has three workers suddenly only has one, that number has changed. If someone calls you every day and suddenly stops, that number has changed.
Those changes are clues.
I did not learn that from a math book. I learned it from living.
I remember sitting on the front steps when I was young and watching people walk by. I did not even know I was doing anything special. I just counted. Some days, twenty people went by. Some days thirty. Some days ten.
Then one day, there were none.
No people. Nothing.
And it felt wrong.
I did not know why. I could not explain it. But I knew something was different.
That was when I learned that numbers can tell you something is happening before you even know what it is.
If you learn what is normal, you can see what is not normal.
That is the second way numbers help solve puzzles. They show you when something breaks the pattern.
Now here is something that might sound funny, but it is very real.
Numbers can also tell you how something was built.
Think about stairs. If every step is the same height and width, you walk right up them without thinking. But if one step is taller than the others, you trip. Why? Because your body was counting. You did not know it. Your mind simply expected the pattern to continue. Then it did not.
That is how puzzles are built, too.
Someone creates a system. They repeat it. And somewhere inside that system is the key. One number does not match. One thing is different. One piece is out of place.
That little difference is usually the answer.
When I first started learning puzzles, I noticed that most things that looked complicated were actually made of repeating parts. Once you know the pattern, you can break it. That sounds a little evil when I say it out loud. I promise I only use my powers for good and occasionally to win at board games.
Take something simple like a lock. Maybe it has four wheels. It looks impossible. It looks magical. It looks like the kind of thing a villain would hide treasure behind. But it is really just choices. Each wheel goes from zero to nine. Ten choices. Four wheels.
Suddenly, your mind starts asking questions.
How many possibilities are there? How long would it take? Could it eventually be solved?
The answer is yes. Because it is not endless. That is what numbers do. They take something that feels infinite and make it countable. And anything that can be counted can be understood.
And anything that can be understood can eventually be solved.
I know this might seem short for the subject matter, since there are so many things we use numbers for; however, you must think about why explain the same thing 20 different ways when they are all the same with different headings and titles? That is right, there is no reason, you, my new sleuths, should be able to see what I gave you here can be used in many different ways.
