Jake, a man whose face held the map of countless miles, gripped the wheel. "Five South," the dispatcher’s voice, a low growl, still echoed in his ears. He'd heard the tales: a teenage girl, lost to the asphalt, her spirit tethered to the lonely stretch of highway. He'd dismissed them as folklore, but the darkness pressed in, a tangible dread.
The night deepened, swallowing the truck in its vast, silent maw. The radio, usually a companion, spat static, a discordant whine. Every mile felt heavier, the air thick with an unseen presence. He noticed a flicker in his side mirror, a fleeting shape that vanished into the darkness. He dismissed it, but the unease grew.
A stop in Lynn's lone diner. The diner, a beacon of weak light, offered a brief respite. Martha, her eyes old and knowing, spoke of the highway's history. "She was young," Martha said, her voice a low murmur. "An argument, a bad choice, and then... nothing."
Back on the road, the truck became a steel coffin. The static intensified, a high-pitched scream, and a heavy bang on the door jolted him. Nothing. A moan, thin and sorrowful, cutting through the night. Then, a figure materialized in the headlights, pale and indistinct. A teenage girl, her eyes hollow, her expression a mask of sorrow. Jake slammed on the brakes, the truck swerving, nearly plunging into the ditch.
He pulled over, the engine shuddering to a halt. He knew this spot, the place Martha had described. He walked to the edge of the road, the air heavy with an unspoken grief. He saw a small ditch, overgrown with weeds, the place where the girls body was found. He placed a handful of wildflowers, their delicate petals a stark contrast to the rough earth.
He speaks to the darkness. "I don't know what happened," he says, his voice rough. "But I'm sorry. Sorry for your pain."
A stillness settled over the road. The static ceased. The girl's presence, though still felt, was no longer a threat. It was a lonely vigil, a sorrowful echo, but the anger had dissipated. He know that the road would its secrets but for tonight the young girl was at rest.
Jake climbed back into his truck, the weight on his soul lighter. He continued down Five South, the highway no longer a place of terror, but a reminder of a life lost, and a sorrow that lingered.
