This story is one of the most heartbreaking pieces I have read in a long time. What begins as a simple classroom scene slowly unfolds into a tragic tale of abuse, neglect, and lost dreams. The author does an excellent job of building sympathy for Mint, a young girl whose quiet suffering is hidden behind silence and poor academic performance. The conversation between Mint and Ms. Quinnzel about dreams is the emotional core of the story. Mint's innocent question, "Am I allowed to dream?" is both
