PEACEFUL SNAKES

Ocheni is the strongest part of this story. His repeated encounters with snakes make him feel brave but increasingly unsettled, and I enjoyed the contrast between his practical work as a woodman and his almost philosophical worry about whether snakes are peaceful. The priest’s answer gives the story a moral and spiritual direction, though the final line about replacing Male Musa’s name feels abrupt and confusing. The numbered snake encounters create vivid moments, especially the snake between Ocheni’s legs, but I wanted more insight into Ocheni’s feelings and a clearer resolution to his fear.
