The Promise Across the Mountains
What stayed with me most was how Lora’s waiting gradually changes from something active and painful into something almost spiritual. At first, every telephone ring makes her heart skip, but after years of silence she stops counting the days and places the future in God’s hands. That shift gave the story a quiet sadness rather than a dramatic one. I did find the long gap after Dorian’s promise emotionally intriguing but a little abrupt; because his call is so intimate and certain, I kept wondering what happened during all those silent years. Still, the closing idea that “some promises live not in words, but in the heart” fits Lora’s transformation and left the story feeling tender and bittersweet.
