The Horror of the Horror Pigeon

I was most interested in Clara’s decision to go into the woods, because her curiosity gives the legend a human focus instead of leaving it as background folklore. Her “lantern and her courage” make her feel brave, but I wondered what personal reason made uncovering the truth worth risking her life; that motivation stays fairly broad. I liked the image of her returning “trembling but alive” and warning the villagers, though the encounter moves so quickly that I didn’t get much sense of how it changed her beyond fear. The Horror Pigeon itself is an amusingly strange premise wrapped in familiar gothic imagery, and Clara could make it feel more emotionally distinctive with a little more uncertainty or inner conflict.
