Til we meet again
This feels like a quiet farewell to a former self, but it never settles into simple sadness. The repeated “until we meet again” carries both grief and tenderness, especially beside the intimate memory of late-night laughter and brushing your teeth together. I also felt the tension in saying that one of you gets to go: it sounds painful, even while the change is described as growth and victory. The chest and basement image gives those memories somewhere tangible to rest. There is comfort here, but also a real ache that the comfort does not erase.

Wait! What did you mean?...
The story kept me hooked through the eerie mismatch between what the narrator expected and what everyone else seemed to know. The empty breakfast table, the classmates’ silence, the flowers and teddy bear, and especially Scott driving away made me feel that something terrible had happened before the narrator could understand it. That repeated voice gave the whole day a sad, dreamlike pull, so the hospital reveal landed with real impact. I also liked how the ending circles back to the opening phrase through the mother, though I was left wondering whether the brother died in the accident or whether the narrator’s mind was protecting her from the full truth. That unanswered question adds to the emotional sting.

Wait! What did you mean?...
A brilliant portrayal of that state of having one foot here and the other THERE.
