Neverheaven Chronicles: The Vaticide
The strongest material here is the family grief: Joseph’s silence, Nathan waking briefly expecting his mother, and the friendship with Enoch all feel painfully real. The stalled car on the tracks finally gives that sadness a sharp, frightening edge, especially when Joseph looks at Nathan. I did find the chapter uneven, with the political opening and outline-like fragments pulling me out of the story, but the final image creates real urgency.
