The Great Bird

I enjoyed how the tale keeps shifting between shipwrecked tragedy and the possibility that we’re watching a performance take shape. The elephant bird is vivid and genuinely frightening, but the final turn makes the rescued man’s grief feel newly uncertain: is he mourning, calculating, or doing both? The captain’s offer is generous on the surface and quietly predatory underneath, especially in “Or other people’s.” That closing line leaves the whole story balanced between survival, invention, and exploitation.

I loved the gradual shift in perspective here. The commander’s coffee mug, his inherited affection for the Mark I, and especially his feeling for the Mark III make this secret operation feel less like a joke and more like a disappearing naval tradition. His pride in the old machines sits beautifully beside his acceptance of progress. Then the final reveal—that all this discipline is devoted to giving people three seconds of Nessie—lands with such dry, gentle charm. It made the deception feel almost generous: a carefully maintained little mystery people are allowed to enjoy.

What an interesting take on the Loch Ness Monster! It actually seems more plausible that it's a drone created by the British military rather than a real monster.
