Kolkata was one city where Arjun always cherished close to his heart; a city where there was a perfect blend of the olden charm and modern hustle and bustle. It was his native place where he had formed his roots, made friendships, and passed days of freedom. After a long gap and respite from this city, he was back to get in touch with the friends he had lost from his childhood - Priya, Rohan, Meera, and Sandeep.
They had taken totally different paths in life: Arjun, now an architect; Priya, leading lawyer in chambers; Rohan, top-notch tech entrepreneur; Meera, artist; and Sandeep in journalism. Their reunion was filled with laughter and nostalgia as they remembered their school days. On one such evening, as they gathered in a caf? in South Kolkata, the conversation meandered towards old ghost stories. The daredevil that he always was, Rohan brought up the story of Ananya's Mansion. "You guys remember that old mansion on the outskirts of the city? They say it's haunted and nobody's lived there for decades." Priya shivered just a bit. "I've heard about it. They say the place is cursed, and the last person who lived there disappeared without a trace." Owning an almost automatic penchant for journalism and digging out the facts for himself, Sandeep leant in closer to the screen. "I've read about it in local papers; it seems there's been a lot of paranormal activity reported, and the mansion's history is shrouded in mystery." Meera seemed interested, always having a bent for the morbid and artistic. "That actually would be a good inspiration for a new project; a haunted mansion can create an awesome story or painting." Arjun, as always, a conciliator, saw the fear and at the same time the interest of his friends. "What if we explore it together? Just for kicks. We could get some stories and take a few photos. It might be a great adventure and an experience we could never forget." The prospect made him both elated and a bit scared. A plan was set, and they would go to the mansion, explore its dark corners, and reveal whatever secrets hid in it. The two headed off to get a hold of cameras and equipment used to record videos, and even Meera was pursuaded to take her sketchpad so she can record the gloomy atmosphere. After some time, Priya gave in to the proactive stance of her friends and gave in to what they wanted and decided to go along with them. They decided to go on a Saturday evening, speculating that the cold chill in the air would make them feel less off should they proceed with their exploration. As the date grew closer, they prepared some more and talked about the strategy over calls and messages. The idea was plain: get to the mansion just a little before twilight and explore the main spots, taking notes on what they saw.
That mansion - ruined and set on the outskirts of the town of Kolkata - must have been the object of more ghost stories than any house in West Bengal. On the lips of the locals, it was murmured on the strange happenings within those walls and of the disappearance of its last dweller, a young girl by the name of Ananya, many decades ago. It was said to be cursed for being a place where the boundary between the world of the living and the world of the dead was dangerously thin.
Some of the members who were braver or more curious ventured into the mansion. Armed with flashlights, a couple of cameras, and a sense of adventure, they set off on one humid evening - the setting sun casting long shadows on the narrow streets of Kolkata.
An eerie quiet fell around them as they approached the mansion. The building towered before them like a ghost, its one-time grandeur now shrouded in ivy and decay. The iron gate creaked as they pushed it open, the sound echoing ominously in the still air.
"Are we really doing this?" she asked Priya, her voice tinged with both excitement and apprehension.
"Come on, Priya, where's your sense of adventure?" Rohan teased, but he really was nervous.
It was Arjun who took the lead. His flashlight cut the blackness as they stepped onto the overgrown pathway toward the entrance. The entrance to the mansion was marked by the huge wooden doors. Arjun took a deep breath and pushed them open to go inside.
Inside the air was heavy with dust and the musty smell of things long neglected. Cobwebs had taken up residence in its numerous corners, and with every step across the wooden floorboards, an awful groan went off. The feeling of foreboding within grew stronger with every step through the foyer. The mansion seemed to pulse with a life of its own, whispering its secrets inside the shadowy corners.
"Look at this place," Meera said, the demented beauty around them hinting at a certain artistic vision. "Looks like a lost piece of history."
"Or a haunted mansion straight out of some horror movie," Sandeep shot back with a click of his camera.
They explored the ground floor, and in the rooms full of dusty furniture and remnants of a bygone era, they found the diary. Its cover was of cracked leather, and on the first page was the name "Ananya."
"Guys, look at this," Meera said, holding up the diary. "It's Ananya's."
They all were curious to hear what it contained so when Priya read out a few lines, they all huddled up to hear her better. So, she began to read. The entries started innocuously enough, detailing the daily life of a young girl. But as they continued, the tone grew increasingly dark. Ananya wrote of strange noises, cold spots, and the feeling of being watched. The last entry spoke of an approaching terror and then, abruptly, the diary ended.
Arjun shuddered. "We need to be careful," he told the other two in a low voice, "something's not right here."
As if nature were trying to respond in agreement, a sudden gust of wind wrecked the trio's flashlights. The darkness engulfed them, and out of nowhere, they heard a faint, mournful whisper.
"Leave? now?"
In horror, they frantically fumbled to turn their flashlights back on. When the light finally sprang back, it revealed that they were no longer alone. A figure stood at the far end of the room, its features obscured by the shadows. As it took a step closer, they found it was a girl; her eyes told of sadness and rage.
"Ananya?" Priya called softly.
In the twinkling of an eye, the apparition vanished and the silence was oppressive. The group members began milling around in their thoughts. Dark secrets of the mansion were starting to strike in, and they had got started yet to have any clue about the abominable things that would wait for them.
At the moment the figure disappeared, the group exchanged uneasy glances. The tension was almost palpable, and it was clear the group members were deeply unsettled.
"We should stick together," Arjun insisted. "This place is playing pranks on us."
They continued in the mansion together without turning off their flashlights where their shadows wandered long on the walls. They saw a gigantic unsigned elegant staircase leading both upwards and into the top floors, and they continued to explore things. The cold in the air increased in intensity with each level they climbed, a dreadful sensation increasing while they climbed.
The next rooms were the bedrooms at the end of the first floor. Most were filled with pieces of decaying, dusty furniture, except for that one. It was furnished fine, with a large, four-poster bed - furnished too - and heavy curtains that could have been untouched by time.
"This has to be ananya's room," said Meera almost in a whisper.
They filed into the room. Feeling an inexplicable chill and wracked by shivers, Priya strolled over to the window and peered through it. She could only see darkness.
"This is just too much," she said to them. "I need a moment."
Arjun understood and nodded. He knew she needed distance. "We'll be right outside if you need us."
As the others drifted out of the room, Priya sank to the edge of the bed, her heart pounding, trying to compose herself. The oppressive atmosphere of the mansion had set her on edge.
Arjun stood back in the corridor while at it, growing worried for Priya. He knew she was a strong girl, but this place - it was different. This place had a way of getting under one's skin. He knocked gently on the door and went in.
"Are you okay?" His voice was soft.
Priya looked up at him; her eyes shimmered with the conflict going on in her. "I don't know, Arjun. This place. it's like it's alive."
Arjun lowered himself to the bed beside her, and both felt so weighted by the silence around them that it was almost as if they were being sucked toward each other. In the room's weak light, they took comfort in one another.
"Maybe we should leave," she said, sounding so small. "This was a bad idea."
Arjun reached for her hand. "We'll go soon, I promise. But for now, we'll just focus on each other."
The tension between them changed, becoming something more intimate. In that haunted room, with the shadows closing in around them, they turned to each other for a kind of comfort that could only be provided by one another. Arjun leaned in and kissed Priya softly, promising her warmth and security in the chilly arms of the mansion.
Their kiss deepened, and for a moment it was as though they were lost to the horrors of the mansion: they were lost in each other, their fears forgotten, as each strove to go to the fulfillment of their connection. The old springs in the bedground on soundingly and uncomfortably beneath them; a reminder of where they were, really. They paid no attention, focused solely on their shared desire.
She reached around him with quivering breath, and her hand slid lower, fingers following the line of his waistband. He gasped softly; the shivers translated into the sensation in his spine. Everything around them faded while they slipped into the intensity of their shared moment. The old bed beneath them creaked, reminding them of the mansion all around, but they ignored it, lost in their need for each other.
The room grew unbearably cold. Just as the tension reached its peak, a ghostly hand brushed against Priya's shoulder, freezing her in place. She and Arjun turned to see Ananya's figure standing at the foot of the bed, her eyes filled with sorrow and longing.
"Please. help me." she whispered, her voice a haunting echo.
Their own reality came crashing back down on them, and they quickly collected their belongings. The grip held upon them by the mansion had suddenly become tight; they knew they had to get out of the clutching of that house before it's too late.
Hearts hammering, they met in the hallway to regroup themselves, and - although they were scared - they decided to try to continue investigating. They went next into the basement, a dark and musty place that smelled of decay. They went colder and colder descending, and noticed strange symbols on the walls.
"This is not normal," Sandeep muttered as she snapped pictures of the eerie carvings.
In one of the farthest corners of the basement, they stumbled upon a small hidden chamber. It contained an altar, dusty and covered with cobwebs. There were different things lying on the top of it, serving as relics and symbols for dark rituals. Meera, who very often remained cool and rational, started behaving weird. Her eyes skimmed and her mouth muttered in some ancient language.
"Meera, what's wrong with you?" Rohan asked, trying to shake her out of the trance.
But Meera's force was of the unnatural kind, and she could easily push at Rohan's chest. Her malevolent eyes shone, and her voice thundered with a power not her own.
"She is mine now," a voice said through Meera, sending chills down their spines.
Arjun, Priya, and Sandeep all held her down, but a supernatural power was being used each time to snap free. The truth was that it was pretty obvious that an ancient entity was trying to take control of her.
"We have to help her," Arjun said in a very strong, fast tone.
On his cue, Rohan then remembered the passage he read from Ananya's diary about the rituals. "The diary mentioned something about the cleansing of the mansion and freeing of the spirits. We need to find it."
Together they rushed back to the room where they had found the diary, flipping pages frantically. Priya located the entry that described a ritual Ananya had hoped would free her from the mansion. "It says here we need to gather certain items from around the mansion," Priya read allowed shakily. "One candle from the dining room, a mirror from the master bedroom, and a piece of jewelry from Ananya's room. Then we'll have to perform the ritual in the basement." Determined anew, they split up to find the items. Rohan and Sandeep were in the master bedroom, Meera was sitting in the same pose and state, and the two hostile vigil holders were watching over her. No exception happened to the dining room, where it was dark and oppressive. As Arjun and Priya advanced in, the air around and in front of them seemed to thicken. Above the room immediately to the right was the massive room of the dining room. An elaborate candle holder with a candle almost half burnt was all they caught a glimpse of it. When they picked it, they felt a chill run down their backs but ignored it, as they knew they had no time to waste. Rohan and Sandeep, meanwhile, had located the master bedroom, where a large dusty gilded mirror stared back at them from the wall. Lifting it from the wall, a terrible cold swept through the room and left them shivering. They rushed back to the spot of meeting, from where they had first separated. Back in Ananya's room, Priya picked a very fragile locket from the bedside. She touched it gingerly, reaching out to the girl who had once worn it. They reassembled in the basement, their scavenged objects in tow. "Okay, let's see what we have here," Arjun said, placing the candle on the altar. Priya put the mirror and the locket beside it. Following the diary's instructions, they placed the objects in order and started doing the ritual. They chanted the archaic words, their voices echoing through the cold, dark basement. Meanwhile, as she was going through it, Meera's eyes went clear. The malevolent presence in her was weakening. The air turned colder, and before them a ghostly figure materialized. It was Ananya, the eyes reflecting sorrow and piteous hope. "Oh, thank you," she murmured, and found no words hissed through her voice. "You have to complete the ritual to set me free." Further with the chanting, the symbols on the walls seemed to light up in some eerie light. The ground shook, and cold wind lashed at them. The forces of the entity that had possessed Meera screamed and fell to their knees. "Keep at it!" Arjun yelled above the din. They chanted louder, their voices oozing with resolve. The light coming from the symbols grew in intensity and filled the room, almost to blindness. The entity's scream spirals to a crescendo and suddenly stops. Afterward, in complete silence, the figure of Ananya lit up a soft, peaceful glow. She gave them a small smile of thanks; her eyes were full of it. "Thank you," she said again, in clear and strong voice. "You have released me." And she was gone, and the oppressive nature of the mansion had lifted away. The symbols on the walls had faded, and the temperature had risen to normal. Exhausted but glad, the group limped outside of the mansion. They all walked out to where the cool night air embraced them with waves of serenity. Now, the house that had formerly been dark and oppressive with fear felt calm and tranquil. 'We did it,' Rohan said with something like awe in his voice. 'Yes, we did,' Priya agreed, looking at her friends with a mixture of pride and relief. Arjun put his arm around Priya, drawing her close. "Let's never do anything like this again," he commented wryly. Chuckling softly, Priya did not feel the tension of the night parting finally. As they stood together outside the mansion, the night sky was clear, and a little breeze ruffled their hair. In that moment of shared relief and new closeness, Arjun turned to Priya; his eyes reflecting the soft light of the moon. He took her in his arms, and without saying a word, he kissed her softly. An equally enthused Priya answered with the same devotion, and they kept on kissing one another, wrapped one in the stillness of the night. It was a promise, a shared gist of what was felt amidst all that hullabaloo a few minutes ago. Far from the coldness of the mansion, the warmth of their connection held an antithesis; it reminded them of their bond and the strength they found in each other. Smiling as they broke apart, their faces lit by the moonlight. The mansion behind them now seemed ironically distant, a shadow of a long-lost past. The horrors were over, and they were ready to face the future now. With one last look at the mansion, the gang started the walk back into the city. The air that night foreboded peace and hope, and they knew whatever hardships accompanied the following days, they'd face them together. And thus it happened that the haunting of Ananya's Mansion came to an end, and it left them with the memory of that terrible night and the beginning of a new chapter in their lives.
