I. The Haunting Begins
The house on Blackthorn Hill had been abandoned for years. No one dared to step inside, for the whispers in the wind told stories of those who had entered but never returned. When Alex and his friends heard about it, they saw only an opportunity for adventure.
"Just one night," Alex insisted. "If we stay until dawn, we’ll prove it’s all just stories."
His friends—Liam, Sophie, and Mark—hesitated but eventually agreed. They packed flashlights, sleeping bags, and a camera, determined to document their night inside the house that never slept.
II. The First Signs
As they stepped inside, the air grew cold. The floorboards groaned beneath their weight, and the walls, covered in peeling wallpaper, seemed to exhale dust. A grand staircase stood at the center, winding up into darkness.
"Creepy, but not haunted," Liam muttered.
Mark set up the camera in the living room while Sophie inspected an old piano. The moment her fingers brushed the keys, a single note rang out—long, shrill, and unnatural.
"I didn’t press anything!" she whispered.
The room fell silent, but the shadows in the corners seemed to stretch closer.
III. The Whispers
Hours passed. The friends laughed off the small incidents, convincing themselves it was all their imagination. But as midnight approached, the whispers began.
At first, they were faint, like the wind rustling leaves outside. But soon, distinct voices echoed through the halls, muttering incoherent words.
Alex grabbed the camera and whispered, "Did you hear that?"
A whisper responded, "Yes."
The friends froze. The voice had not come from any of them.
IV. The Unseen Presence
Panic set in. Sophie clutched Mark’s arm. "This isn’t funny, Alex. Stop."
"That wasn’t me!" Alex hissed.
Footsteps echoed from the upper floor, slow and deliberate. The friends turned toward the staircase, their breaths shallow. A shadow moved, shifting unnaturally against the dim light.
"Who’s there?" Liam called out, his voice breaking.
Silence.
Then, in a guttural whisper, a voice answered: "We never sleep."
V. The Escape
The friends bolted for the door, but it slammed shut before they could reach it. The room darkened as the shadows thickened. Mark fumbled for the camera, trying to turn on the flashlight, but the battery was dead.
"Try the windows!" Sophie cried.
But the windows were no longer there. The walls stretched endlessly, warping into a maze of darkness.
The whispers grew louder. Laughter. Screams. Crying.
A figure emerged from the shadows—a woman, her face obscured, her body shifting like mist. She reached out, her fingers elongating unnaturally. "Stay with us," she whispered.
Liam screamed as something unseen pulled him backward. His form twisted, his body disappearing into the darkness as the others watched in horror.
Alex, Sophie, and Mark grabbed each other, pushing forward blindly. A door materialized before them. They lunged for it, bursting through into the cold night air.
The house stood behind them, silent, unmoving. The door was gone. The windows were back. The whispers had stopped.
Except…
Liam was nowhere to be found.
VI. The Aftermath
The police searched the house. There was no trace of Liam, no evidence they had ever been inside. Their camera, found near the entrance, showed only static—except for the last frame.
A blurred image of Liam, standing in the doorway, his mouth open in a silent scream, as shadowy hands pulled him into the darkness.
Alex and the others never spoke of that night again. But sometimes, when the wind howled through Blackthorn Hill, they swore they could hear a whisper.
"We never sleep."
