For several months, humanity had tomorrow on its phone.

It arrived at eight in the morning as a single AI-generated image: one scene from the following calendar day. Not necessarily an important scene, or a scene in which the recipient appeared. Sometimes it showed an object in isolation, enlarged against a neutral background. Sometimes the perspective was architectural, a wall or ceiling removed for clarity. VUBU did not claim to have sent a camera ahead. The image was an AI representation. And what it represented would happen the following calendar day.

The first images were treated with religious attention. People woke early for them. Families gathered around phones. Couples compared details, enlarged reflections, searched backgrounds for weather, money, strangers and signs of disloyalty. The company repeatedly advised customers not to infer more than the image contained. This warning, being sensible, was ignored.

VUBU’s one inviolable rule was that the images must concern matters of low consequence. No deaths. No diagnoses. No market movements, lottery results or political events. The system was permitted to show only tomorrow’s minor furniture: a wet pavement, a folded shirt, a parcel beside a door.

Each image was cryptographically signed at the moment of generation. Its unique fingerprint and timestamp were entered into a public blockchain and confirmed across thousands of independent nodes. The arrangement had been designed to answer the obvious accusation: VUBU could not quietly replace an unsuccessful prediction. A single altered pixel would produce a different signature.

Nobody found an unsuccessful prediction.

They found ambiguity, certainly. They found coincidence, imperfect interpretation and a great deal of human eagerness to call an approximation exact. Universities tested the system. Magicians tried to embarrass it on television. People destroyed pictured objects, cancelled journeys and confined themselves to known locations. The results were debated until the debates became repetitive. VUBU survived them without ever becoming entirely respectable. It occupied that irritating region between the inexplicable and the merely clever.

The Vale family subscribed during the expensive period.

For £59.99 a month, Owen Vale received tomorrow on his phone and complained about the price to anybody who asked. He nevertheless checked it every morning.

One Monday, VUBU showed a cardboard box resting beside the front door at an angle. The shipping label was indistinct except for the final digits of a tracking number. Owen recognised them. A pair of speakers he had ordered was still registered at a freight depot in Rotterdam.

The tracking service estimated delivery on Thursday. VUBU had shown the box on Tuesday.

At half past three on Tuesday afternoon, a courier placed it by the front door. At an angle. One upper corner had collapsed slightly inward, exactly as rendered.

Owen photographed the box from several angles and uploaded the comparison to a verification forum. The post attracted nine thousand reactions. A local news site asked to use his photographs. For twenty-four hours, the Vale family became minor custodians of the impossible.

Mara Vale was less impressed by the delivery. VUBU knew the tracking number, the courier’s route and presumably the location of every vehicle involved. However extraordinary the computation might be, a parcel already travelling towards their home seemed a modest conquest of time.

Her own test came several weeks later.

The image showed a red woollen scarf resting across the back of a wooden chair in a café. Mara owned an identical scarf and usually wore it when meeting a friend there. The conclusion appeared almost insultingly obvious.

She left her scarf at home.

Mara did not cancel the meeting. That would have granted VUBU too much authority. She went to the café, ordered tea and spent an hour discussing her friend’s kitchen renovation. Her own chair remained bare.

As she stood to leave, she noticed the scarf.

It hung from another wooden chair across the room. Same red wool, same pattern, same short fringe. A woman Mara had never seen was fastening her coat beside it.

At home, Mara found her own scarf exactly where she had left it.

This result interested her more than the parcel. VUBU had not shown her scarf. The ownership had been supplied by Mara, and the attempted contradiction had attacked an assertion the image had never made.

For a time, such stories sustained the app. VUBU became a source of parlour philosophy and practical hints. People used it to anticipate rain, deliveries and forgotten appointments. One could feel pleasantly cunning when an image revealed information that another service had failed to provide.

But tomorrow was parsimonious.

Some mornings brought only a blade of grass. Its meaning, if it possessed one, might become apparent when the gardener arrived. Other images showed condensation, paving stones, an open drawer or the corner of a blue towel. They came true, insofar as anyone bothered checking.

The novelty passed first. Utility lasted slightly longer.

Subscriber-count plateaued. Daily engagement declined. Most users stopped sharing their images unless they were unusually attractive or funny. VUBU lowered its subscription fee, introduced a family plan and began sending notifications reminding customers that tomorrow was ready to view.

The notifications were increasingly dismissed.

A widely circulated article supplied the intellectual conclusion for which boredom had prepared the public. VUBU, it argued, did not see the future. It saw calendars, purchase histories, delivery networks, weather systems, household routines and the movements of millions of interconnected devices. A gardener came every Wednesday; VUBU showed cut grass. A parcel left Rotterdam; VUBU placed it beside the purchaser’s door. This was prediction of a remarkable order, but prediction was not prophecy.

The article did not explain the red scarf. It did not explain the system’s perfect verified record. It did not need to. It gave the culture a phrase with which to stop thinking.

It’s just predictive.

The company denied that its technology could be reduced to data aggregation. Its statements were earnest, lengthy and lightly attended. VUBU’s share price descended without drama. There was no scandal, no revelatory failure, no morning when the app ceased to work. People simply became unwilling to pay for an AI image telling them what a delivery notification already had.

Many cancelled. Others forgot to cancel. The service survived as subscriptions often do: not through devotion, but through the small administrative burden of ending them.

The Vales kept theirs.

Owen no longer checked every morning. Mara occasionally opened the app in the evening and inspected the image after its promised event had occurred. Their daughter Liv had silenced the notifications months before.

A year after the box from Rotterdam, VUBU still delivered tomorrow to the Vale family at eight each morning.

Most days, nobody looked.

2e:T1eba,

Davey Mann was nine years old when he vanished somewhere between his front door and the school gates.

The distance was seven hundred metres. He had walked it alone since spring, after several weeks of advancing arguments about his age, his reliability and the acute embarrassment of being seen with his father. There were two roads to cross, both supervised during school hours, and a narrow passage behind the library where the municipal cameras had been broken since June.

On Tuesday, 19 September 2034, Davey left home at 8:12.

He wore grey trousers, a navy school jumper and white trainers whose purchase he had defended on the grounds that everybody had them. His mother watched him from the upstairs window. At the corner, he kicked something—probably a bottle cap—into the gutter and disappeared behind a delivery van.

The school registered his absence at 9:06.

The notification reached his mother’s phone at 9:08. She read it twice before calling the school, expecting the usual administrative correction. A secretary checked the classroom, the medical room and the late-arrivals register. Davey had not been seen.

By ten, two police officers were standing in the Manns’ kitchen.

The first hour was consumed by questions whose ordinariness felt insulting. Had Davey been unhappy? Had he argued with anyone? Did he carry money? Was there somewhere he liked to go?

His parents answered carefully, as though one incorrect detail might cause the morning to harden permanently around them.

Davey had been cheerful at breakfast. He had complained about the banana in his lunchbox. He had asked whether he could stay at a friend’s house on Friday. He carried twelve pounds in the inner pocket of his school bag.

His room was searched. So were the garden shed, the loft and both family cars. Police examined his tablet and spoke to the parents of his friends. The school emptied cupboards and opened rooms that had not been used since the previous term.

Officers began walking the route.

The city offered fragments. A door camera showed Davey passing at 8:16. A traffic camera caught the back of a child in a navy jumper at 8:19, although the image was too poor for certainty. The crossing supervisor remembered several children arriving together and could not place Davey among them. Nobody had seen a struggle. Nobody had heard a shout.

By lunchtime, his face was moving through private messages and neighbourhood groups.

The photograph chosen by his mother had been taken the previous summer. Davey stood beneath a striped beach umbrella, squinting into the light. It was not the photograph she would have selected for school records. It was the one in which he looked most completely himself.

A local man named Julian Mercer offered to make the posters.

Mercer lived two streets away and ran a small graphic design and print shop on the high street. He knew the family slightly—the thin knowledge of neighbours who accepted parcels for one another and sometimes discussed refuse collection. He asked for Davey’s photograph, his height, the clothes he had been wearing and the number established by the police.

The first design arrived twenty-three minutes later.

Across the top, in heavy black letters, was the word MISSING. Beneath it sat Davey’s photograph, his name, his age and the date and place he had last been seen. Cross had given the poster a narrow red border so that it would remain visible beneath glass and in poor light.

He printed two hundred copies at his own expense.

By four, Davey’s face had appeared on shop doors, bus shelters and lampposts. Volunteers moved through the neighbourhood carrying rolls of tape and bundles of paper. A supermarket donated bottled water. The school opened its assembly hall as a coordination point. People who had never spoken to the Manns began saying Davey’s name with the confidence of relatives.

His father, Graham, searched the passage behind the library three times.

The first time he looked for Davey. The second time he looked for signs of Davey. The third time he no longer knew what he was looking for.

The passage contained weeds, a drinks can and a child’s blue glove hardened by old rain. Graham photographed the glove before realising it was far too small.

At dusk, the search expanded towards the canal.

Police lights moved soundlessly across the houses. The neighbourhood acquired the unnatural wakefulness of a place refusing to let the day end. Curtains remained open. Porch lamps illuminated empty paths. Every adult seemed to be holding a phone, waiting for it to become the instrument through which relief would arrive.

It did not arrive.

Shortly after ten, the Manns were persuaded to return home. One police officer remained outside. Another sat in the kitchen and spoke quietly into a headset.

Davey’s mother went upstairs and lay on his bed without removing her shoes.

Graham stayed downstairs.

A stack of Julian Mercer’s posters occupied one end of the kitchen table. One copy lay apart from the others, beside Davey’s tablet. The red border seemed too bright for the room.

Graham read the poster again.

MISSING

DAVEY MANN, AGED 9

LAST SEEN TUESDAY, 19 SEPTEMBER 2034

He had spent the day learning that despair did not arrive as a single emotion. It arrived as administration. Names, times, passwords, photographs, permissions. He had repeated the description of Davey’s white trainers until they no longer seemed attached to feet.

His phone lay on the table.

He picked it up and checked again. No new messages since the last time, fifteen minutes earlier.

Then he noticed the VUBU icon.

The app had been relegated to a folder months earlier. Its subscription renewed automatically on the twenty-second of each month, and every renewal produced a brief intention to cancel it. He had not opened an image in weeks.

A thought came to him without conviction: tomorrow.

Perhaps the system had shown a road. A railway station. A hospital entrance. Anything that might acquire meaning when viewed by a desperate man.

He opened the app.

Tomorrow’s image showed a small silver dolphin against a field of green fabric. The framing was too close to establish whether it was jewellery, an emblem or part of some larger object; the dolphin’s curved back caught a hard white light.

Graham stared at it, enlarged it and found nothing useful.

“What the hell could that possibly mean?” he said.

He closed the image.

“I’ll cancel this damned app when this nightmare is over and Davey’s found.”

His thumb remained on the screen.

VUBU kept thirty days of previous images. A row of dates ran beneath the current picture.

Something in Graham—not hope exactly, but its exhausted reflex—made him swipe back to Monday, to the image generated before Davey vanished: a glimpse of something that would happen today.

Monday’s image appeared.

Graham stopped breathing.

The screen showed a sheet of white paper lying on a kitchen table. It had a narrow red border. Across the top, in heavy black letters, was the word MISSING.

Beneath it was the photograph of Davey under the striped beach umbrella.

His name. His age. The police number.

And the date on which he had last been seen.

Graham looked from the phone to the poster beside Davey’s tablet.

They were identical.

At the bottom of the screen, beneath the image, was its generation record:

MONDAY, 18 SEPTEMBER 2034 — 08:00:03

2f:T2898,

“You know the image has gone everywhere.”

“Yes.”

“The family released it.”

“I know.”

“They believe somebody here knows where their son is.”

Eleanor Shaw looked through the glass wall of the meeting room. Beyond it, VUBU’s headquarters had the depleted air of a building evacuated without instructions. Half the desks were empty. Those employees who remained worked beneath the mute agitation of their phones.

“Most of the country believes that,” she said.

Detective Chief Inspector Helen Ward placed a printed copy of the image on the table.

Monday’s VUBU rendering appeared on the left. Julian Mercer’s missing poster appeared on the right. They shared Davey Mann’s photograph, the narrow red border, the same line breaks and the same police number.

Between them lay one day.

The Mann family had released the image on their solicitor’s advice. Publicity, however grotesque its origin, meant more eyes searching for Davey. By morning, the comparison had become the principal news story in the country. VUBU’s old verification page received so much traffic that it failed twice. Amateur investigators downloaded the relevant blockchain record and confirmed what the company had already confirmed: the image’s fingerprint had been registered at eight o’clock on Monday morning.

Davey had left home on Tuesday.

VUBU lost forty-two per cent of its remaining subscribers before lunch.

Ward was accompanied by Detective Sergeant Amir Shah, a digital-forensics specialist whose laptop contained an isolated copy of the material surrendered by the company. He had spent most of the previous night examining it and had acquired the reddened, overdeliberate gaze of a man who had not found the error he required.

At the other end of the table sat VUBU’s chief executive, its security director and two senior developers. None had brought legal representatives into the room, although lawyers occupied a neighbouring office in sufficient numbers to form a second management structure.

The chief executive, Simon Rook, leaned towards the printed images.

“This is the worst thing our product could possibly have done.”

“That doesn’t mean you didn’t do it,” Ward said.

“No. But it should establish that we have no conceivable motive. VUBU was already declining. This image will finish it.”

“A competitor might have a motive.”

“I would be delighted if a competitor had done it.”

Ward watched him.

“Delighted?”

“Sabotage would give us an exit. We could identify a vulnerability, publish the findings and repair it. I’m afraid we haven’t found one.”

Shah turned to Eleanor.

“Who developed the image-selection system?”

“Anton Vey.”

“Then we need to speak to him.”

The silence that followed was slight but unmistakable.

Eleanor said, “Anton died in 2030.”

Ward looked at Shah. He lowered his eyes briefly towards his notes.

“I knew the name,” he said. “I didn’t know he was dead.”

“Most people didn’t know the name,” Eleanor replied. “VUBU was launched after his death.”

“How much of the current system did he write?”

“About ninety per cent.”

“And the remaining ten?”

“That’s the part we understand.”

No one smiled.

Eleanor explained that the surviving developers maintained the visible machinery: the app, customer accounts, data ingestion, rendering, encryption and the public ledger. Anton had built the predictive core and the process by which it selected a scene from the following day.

“You can maintain code you don’t understand?” Ward asked.

“We understand its operations. We don’t understand why they produce perfect results. There’s a difference.”

“Could Vey have left a back door?”

“No.”

“You answered very quickly.”

“Because that part isn’t mysterious. Anton’s core accepts signed inputs and returns a generation package. It cannot upload an image. It has no external communications channel and no administrative interface.”

“What about somebody else inside VUBU?”

“We can ask it for tomorrow. We can't tell it what tomorrow should contain.”

Shah rotated his laptop towards her.

“Every secure system is completely secure until somebody finds the part that isn’t.”

“Agreed. Which is why you’re auditing ours.”

The company had provided source repositories, deployment records, access logs and archived model states. Every production build carried its own signature. The Monday system matched the version approved and deployed three weeks earlier. No code had changed during Davey’s generation cycle. No employee account had accessed the Mann family’s output before the image became public.

The blockchain established something narrower and firmer.

VUBU stored each encrypted image in a distributed archive. Its cryptographic fingerprint was committed to a public block and verified across thousands of independently operated nodes. Alter one pixel and the fingerprint changed. Rewrite Monday’s block and every subsequent block ceased to agree with the historical copies already held across the network.

“We’ve queried archived nodes in nine jurisdictions,” Shah said. “They all return the same Monday record.”

Eleanor nodded.

“So the image existed on Monday,” Ward said.

“Yes.”

“That doesn’t prove your system created it.”

“No,” Eleanor replied. “For that, you rerun Monday.”

Ward glanced at Shah.

He sat forward. “You can do that?”

“Of course.”

“Retrieve the output?”

“Not retrieve it. Ask it again in an identical system.”

Eleanor said this with the casualness of somebody offering to resend an invoice.

VUBU preserved what it called an inference capsule for every daily generation: the model weights, source build, household inputs, software environment and deterministic seed. The archive existed for regulatory audits. Given the same capsule, the system produced the same image. Not approximately the same image. The same pixels, in the same order, yielding the same cryptographic fingerprint.

“There’s no stochastic variation?” Shah asked.

“None in production.”

“No temperature?”

“No alternate outputs. One household, one date, one image.”

Eleanor led them into a smaller room containing a terminal unconnected to VUBU’s live network. Shah inspected the sandbox himself. The archived Monday capsule had already been copied under police supervision, but he compared its signatures once more before allowing it to run.

The screen displayed lines of diagnostic text.

Nobody spoke.

After four minutes, an image began resolving from a field of grey. First came the white rectangle of paper. Then the narrow red border. Then the heavy black word at the top.

MISSING

Davey’s face appeared beneath it.

Ward looked at the copy in her hand and then at the screen. The same photograph. The same type. The same spacing. The same date.

The system completed its work and displayed the resulting hash.

Shah compared it with the hash recorded on Monday’s blockchain.

Every character matched.

“So nobody inserted the image,” Ward said.

“Not through any mechanism we can identify,” Shah replied.

“Your machine made it twice.”

Eleanor remained facing the screen.

“It will make it as many times as you ask.”

As Eleanor leaned across the terminal to close the sandbox, the silver dolphin on her green blouse caught the light.

Shah looked at it twice.

They returned to the meeting room.

Outside, VUBU’s subscriber counter continued its numerical evacuation. Rook had stopped checking it. A statement drafted by the company described the Davey image as an unprecedented failure of the low-consequence filter. It did not call the image inaccurate. Accuracy was the problem.

Ward placed both posters side by side again.

“Could somebody have seen Monday’s image before Davey disappeared?”

“The image was encrypted for the Mann account,” said the security director.

“Could it have been stolen?”

“We have found no evidence of access.”

“That isn’t the same as impossible.”

“No. But any intruder would have needed to breach the distributed archive, obtain the Manns’ encryption keys and identify their household from anonymised records. Nothing in our logs suggests that happened.”

Ward tapped Julian Mercer’s poster.

“This was created on Tuesday.”

“So we understand.”

“By a man who lives two streets from Davey.”

Nobody offered an interpretation.

Later, in the underground car park, Ward and Shah sat in their unmarked car without starting it. Rain moved in fine diagonal lines through the concrete entrance.

“Suppose somebody accessed Monday’s image,” Ward said. “They know what VUBU has produced. They find the family.”

“And then?”

“They make it happen.”

“Davey’s disappearance?”

“The poster. Perhaps both.”

Shah looked at her.

“That would require somebody to commit a crime because an app had already pictured its aftermath.”

“I know.”

“And Mercer prints the poster publicly, using his own name?”

“I know.”

“What possible incentive does he have?”

“I don’t know.”

Shah rested his hands on the steering wheel.

“He made the poster because Davey went missing. VUBU made the poster before Davey went missing. You’re trying to put Mercer between those two facts.”

“At present, he’s the only living person we know who connects them.”

“He may have done nothing except help.”

“Probably.”

Ward picked up her phone.

“But he made Tuesday’s poster exactly like Monday’s image.”

She found Julian Mercer’s address and sent it to the local team.

“Let’s ask him how.”

30:Te2d,

Julian Mercer was interviewed twice and ruled out within forty-eight hours.

There had never been very much to rule out.

He had printed the missing posters because Graham Mann had asked him to and because he owned the machinery required to do it. He had never held a VUBU account, had never worked for the company, had never accessed its systems and, until Davey’s disappearance, had regarded the product as an expensive gimmick chiefly useful for telling people that tomorrow would contain a parcel.

His computers were examined. His phones were examined. His business server was examined.

Nothing connected him to VUBU except the fact that, several hours after Davey disappeared, he created a poster which VUBU had apparently generated the day before.

That was enough to make him famous.

Within hours of his name becoming public, television crews had gathered outside his print shop. Amateur investigators photographed customers entering and leaving. His business records were dissected online. Old social-media photographs were reposted and enlarged. Somebody found his home address. Somebody else found his wife’s name.

By the end of the week, police officers were stationed outside his house.

The irony was not lost on Shah. A man who had been investigated because he might have known too much now required police protection because millions of people had decided that he knew more than the police.

A statement was issued on Friday afternoon.

Julian Mercer, police said, had been fully cooperative with the investigation and had been eliminated as a person of interest. There was no evidence that he had accessed VUBU systems, no evidence that he had prior knowledge of Davey Mann’s disappearance and no evidence that the poster had existed before he created it.

Members of the public and the media were asked to respect his privacy.

Then another theory replaced him.

By November, there were hundreds.

None found Davey.

There were sightings at airports, railway stations, shopping centres and parks. A boy photographed in Rotterdam was identified with absolute confidence by thousands of strangers before his mother appeared on television holding his passport. A grainy motorway-service-station image occupied the news cycle for two days. A taxi driver became certain he had collected Davey outside a hotel. A woman in Bristol was equally certain she had seen him buying crisps.

Every possibility created its own little atmosphere of imminence.

Every one collapsed.

The physical search contracted first.

Fields had been crossed and crossed again. Waterways had been dragged. CCTV had been collected until the quantity itself became a problem. Doorbell footage accumulated by the terabyte. Police dogs returned to places they had already searched. Volunteers who had initially arrived in hundreds began arriving in tens.

Then in ones.

The posters faded.

Rain entered the paper around the staple holes. Corners peeled away from lampposts. Davey’s face remained visible longer than the telephone numbers beneath it.

Graham and Rebecca Mann continued appearing occasionally before cameras, although their appearances changed in character.

During the first week, every statement had carried the implicit assumption that Davey was somewhere nearby and about to be found.

By the third month, the language had altered.

Anyone who knows anything.

Anyone who remembers anything.

Please.

The tense had not changed.

Almost everything else had.

31:T1b20,

VUBU did not recover from the Mann image.

The company suspended public image generation four days after the story broke. Initially the suspension was described as temporary. Existing customers retained access to their archives, but no new images were produced.

A week later, subscriptions stopped being charged.

A month after that, VUBU announced that its consumer service would not return.

The statement admitted no fault. There was still no evidence of manipulation, intrusion or data corruption. No employee had been identified as responsible for the Mann image. No outside actor had gained access to the account.

The problem was more fundamental.

The system had apparently done what it was designed to do.

That was now the worst possible explanation.

Responsibility for understanding it passed gradually from the company to institutions whose names sounded less vulnerable to panic.

The National Computational Assurance Directorate began a formal audit of VUBU’s image-generation architecture. A specialist police cybercrime unit worked alongside it. Company engineers remained available under supervision, although their role increasingly resembled that of witnesses being asked to explain a machine they had helped construct.

The audit continued for two months.

It found nothing.

Or rather, it found enormous amounts of information and almost nothing that answered the question.

The production pipeline behaved consistently.

Account authentication was intact.

No administrator had inserted an image.

No undocumented external service had supplied one.

The archived inference package associated with the Mann account generated the same result when rerun.

Delete the output.

Run it again.

The poster returned.

Every time.

The investigators tested older images. They tested random accounts. They rebuilt environments from archived containers and restored models from historical checkpoints.

VUBU continued doing what VUBU had always claimed to do.

This became, in official language, the difficulty.

The deeper the audit went, the less the system resembled a fraud and the more it resembled a machine whose central principle had somehow escaped the people operating it.

Most of the architecture could eventually be understood.

Some of it was ugly. Some of it was brilliant. Some had accumulated in layers across years of development and survived chiefly because nobody had been brave enough to rewrite it.

And then there was Anton Vey’s code.

The auditors encountered his name repeatedly.

Not in comments.

Anton had disliked comments.

His name appeared instead in repository history, old architecture documents, internal tickets and modules that newer developers had learned not to modify unless absolutely necessary.

At the centre of several of those modules was a dependency referred to only as BU.

The designation appeared everywhere once they knew to look for it.

BU_INDEX.

BU_OFFSET.

BU_COORD.

BU_SAMPLE.

BU_RETURN.

The data itself was inaccessible.

Anton had encrypted it.

Not merely secured it behind VUBU’s ordinary access controls, but encrypted it separately using a scheme whose key had never been committed to the repository.

The dataset appeared to be enormous.

Even that was difficult to establish.

Some references treated BU as stored information. Others behaved as though it were an interface rather than a conventional database. Certain functions appeared to request records. Others supplied what looked more like coordinates.

The documentation amounted to three surviving notes.

The first read:

DO NOT MIRROR BU.

The second:

LOCAL RECONSTRUCTION IS NOT REQUIRED.

The third was longer.

BU DATASET MUST REMAIN ENCRYPTED OUTSIDE ACTIVE INFERENCE ENVIRONMENTS.

PUBLIC SAFETY REQUIREMENT.

DO NOT REMOVE.

No explanation followed.

The sentence appeared to have been written by Anton himself.

For several days, the auditors treated public safety as an old security concern: personal data, surveillance exposure, perhaps some abandoned government contract.

Then they found that Anton had used the phrase elsewhere.

Always in connection with BU.

Never in connection with customers.

By January, the audit had produced twelve thousand pages of findings and no explanation for Davey Mann.

The police investigation remained open.

VUBU remained offline.

And in a secured government facility, running on hardware disconnected from the public internet, Anton Vey’s code continued asking an encrypted dataset called BU for generated images of tomorrow.

There was one possibility the audit report did not mention.

Shah remembered Eleanor Price raising it after one of the original interviews, when the recorder had been switched off and the conversation had acquired the looser, faintly indiscreet quality of people standing up to leave.

The developers had wondered about BU themselves.

Not recently.

Years ago.

Anton had never expanded the initials in any document they could find, and when asked directly had tended to answer some adjacent question instead. But he had said enough around it that, eventually, a consensus formed among the senior engineers.

They never used it publicly.

They barely used it privately.

It sounded ridiculous, Eleanor had said. Worse than ridiculous. It made a respectable predictive technology sound like something devised in the back room of a university philosophy department.

And once VUBU worked, the question ceased to matter.

Eleanor thought Anton had understood the necessity of that misunderstanding from the beginning.

Nobody was going to fund a machine whose business plan depended upon a particular theory of time being true.

It had to be predictive technology.

It had to be AI.

Those were ideas investors recognised, with markets attached to them and language already waiting.

Anton had been pragmatic enough not to argue.

But, Eleanor suspected, he had also been incapable of leaving the truth entirely alone.

If he could not say what the machine was doing, he could at least put it in the name and wait for somebody to notice.

The company called it predictive modelling.

The engineers called it inference.

The customers called it tomorrow.

Only Anton had continued calling it VUBU.

Shah had asked Eleanor what the initials meant.

She had looked briefly uncomfortable.

“We think the first part is literal.”

“View?”

“Yes.”

“And BU?”

Eleanor had hesitated.

Then she told him.

View the Block Universe.

32:T36dd,

Anton Vey had been dead for nearly five years when Shah finally heard him explain VUBU.

The recording had been found among the material surrendered during the audit. It was not secret. That was perhaps the strangest thing about it.

Anton had given the talk at a computational sciences conference eighteen months before VUBU launched. There were forty-three people in the audience. Until Davey Mann disappeared, the recording had accumulated only a few thousand views. Then somebody found it yesterday. Over the previous twenty-four hours, it had been watched more than three million times, its least remarkable sentences dissected alongside its most extraordinary ones.

At the time of the conference, VUBU did not exist as a product. There was no company, no consumer service and no angel investment; only Anton, a small research project and a handful of people who understood enough of his work to find it interesting. Some of VUBU’s later investors would eventually discover the recording, but by then Anton spoke a different language. Observation had become prediction. Inaccessible states became predictive modelling. Whatever he believed he had found was translated into the familiar vocabulary of artificial intelligence, and money followed. Nobody appears to have gone back and asked why the man selling them a prediction engine had once spent forty minutes insisting that prediction was precisely what it was not.

The title was:

PREDICTION AS AN ERROR OF PERSPECTIVE

Anton appeared younger than Shah expected.

He was forty-one, narrow-shouldered, with untidy dark hair and the distracted posture of a man whose body had accompanied him somewhere his attention had not. There was no podium. He stood beside a large screen showing a white circle on a black background.

His first words were already underway when the recording began.

“—because prediction is only impressive when observation is impossible.”

Shah stopped the video.

He went back.

Anton began again.

“Prediction is only impressive when observation is impossible. If I tell you it will rain tomorrow, you might ask how I know. If I tell you it is raining in Tokyo, you don't ask how I predicted Tokyo.”

A few people laughed.

Anton did not.

“The distinction is access.”

Shah wrote the word down.

He had been keeping notes for three months, although increasingly he was unsure what they were notes towards.

Anton changed the slide.

A horizontal line appeared.

A dot sat near its centre.

“We have a habit of drawing time like this because this is how we experience it. Behind us. Here. Ahead of us.”

Three more dots appeared.

“The diagram is psychologically accurate. That doesn't make it physically accurate.”

Anton walked across the stage and stood partly in front of the projection.

“If you lived your entire life travelling north, you might develop a very sophisticated vocabulary for north. You might organise your society around north. You might build religions explaining north. None of this would prove south had ceased to exist.”

Shah paused the recording again.

He looked at the audit report open on the second monitor.

BU_COORD.

BU_OFFSET.

BU_SAMPLE.

He resumed.

Anton had not yet built VUBU.

Not publicly, at least.

He referred throughout the talk to an experimental system called V, which he described as a method of extracting visual information from states unavailable to direct observation. Whenever somebody in the audience asked whether this meant prediction, Anton corrected them.

Not impatiently.

Precisely.

“No. Prediction implies derivation.”

Later:

“No. You're adding probability because you're assuming absence.”

And, when one questioner persisted:

“You keep asking me how accurately we can guess what is in the room. I'm telling you I think I found a window.”

There was laughter at that.

Anton smiled.

It was the first time Shah saw him do so.

“I appreciate how that sounds.”

The talk moved into mathematics Shah could not follow. Much of it remained beyond the auditors too. Anton discussed information boundaries, inaccessible states, observational asymmetry and something he called temporal occlusion.

Then, twenty-eight minutes in, the tone changed.

Anton put down the remote.

“I should say something about consequences.”

He looked towards the audience.

“If this works, there will be four stages.”

Shah leaned forward.

“The first is wonder.”

Anton spoke the word almost dismissively.

“This will be the shortest stage. People will ask the large questions. Can we see our deaths? Can we prevent disasters? Can we know who wins wars? Can we look ten years ahead? A hundred? People always begin with eternity.”

The slide behind him disappeared.

“The second stage is practicality.”

A few people were still taking notes.

“This will last longer. Once people discover the system is constrained, they will stop asking what time is and start asking whether they should carry an umbrella.”

More laughter.

Anton waited for it to finish.

“They will use it for deliveries. Traffic. Clothing. Appointments. They will discover that access to another part of time is useful mainly because human beings are late.”

Shah sat very still.

He had read the early VUBU marketing reports.

Weather.

Deliveries.

Commuting.

Household planning.

Anton continued.

“The third stage is boredom.”

Nobody laughed this time.

“Anything miraculous becomes infrastructure if it works reliably enough. Reliability destroys astonishment. Nobody wakes each morning amazed that electricity has returned to the wall.”

He walked slowly across the stage.

“Eventually people will forget what the machine implies. This is necessary. You cannot live permanently in metaphysical astonishment. You still have to buy milk.”

Shah stopped the recording.

Outside the interview room, somebody walked past carrying two coffees.

For several seconds he could hear nothing except the ventilation system.

He pressed play.

Anton was answering a question from the audience.

The question itself was indistinct.

His answer was not.

“No. The fourth stage is fear.”

The room became quiet.

Anton looked down before continuing.

“People say they want to know the future. They don't. They want reassurance from the future.”

He glanced towards the screen behind him, although it was now blank.

“Those are different products.”

Shah watched the sentence again.

Then once more.

People want reassurance from the future.

He thought of Graham Mann standing beneath television lights.

Anyone who knows anything.

Anyone who remembers anything.

Please.

Anton continued.

“A useful future is one which confirms that tomorrow remains ordinary. Your parcel arrives. Your meeting happens. Your garden is wet. You are still there to see these things.”

He paused.

“What happens when the window shows you something you would rather not know?”

Nobody answered.

Anton nodded slightly, as though they had.

“Then you discover why we evolved facing one direction.”

The video continued for another twelve minutes.

It was during those twelve minutes that Shah began to understand why Anton had encrypted BU.

Not because the information was commercially valuable.

Not because it contained customer data.

Anton believed access itself was dangerous.

He described the problem as a firewall.

The term seemed deliberately inelegant.

“Every information system has boundaries. We usually regard the boundary as an inconvenience. Something to bypass.”

He picked up the remote again but did not use it.

“I made that mistake.”

There was a different quality to him now.

The earlier Anton had seemed pleased by the intellectual problem. This one did not.

“I thought the boundary was a technical limitation. Noise. Encryption, if you like. I became interested in decoding it.”

Someone asked a question.

Anton listened.

“No. Not encryption placed there by a person.”

Another question.

He hesitated.

“I don't know what placed it there.”

The room became very quiet.

Anton looked almost annoyed with himself.

“I am going to use language I dislike.”

He took a drink of water.

“There appears to be intelligence in the structure.”

Shah stopped the recording.

He sat back.

The sentence remained on the screen beneath Anton's frozen face.

There appears to be intelligence in the structure.

Shah had spent most of his career learning not to enlarge mysteries merely because they resisted explanation.

A missing child did not become supernatural because nobody found him.

An image did not become a message because nobody understood how it had been made.

Coincidence survived investigation remarkably well.

So did madness.

He pressed play.

“I don't mean a person. I don't mean a god. I don't know what I mean.”

Anton seemed irritated now, not with the audience but with the inadequacy of the available nouns.

“But there are limits to what can be extracted. At first I thought those limits were defects in my method. The better the method became, the more deliberate the limits appeared.”

Another question came from somewhere near the back.

Anton listened.

“Yes. A firewall is the least bad analogy.”

The questioner spoke again.

This time Anton laughed.

“No. I haven't hacked the universe.”

A longer laugh from the room.

Anton waited.

“I decoded a very small part of something that may be there precisely to prevent decoding.”

The laughter disappeared.

“That distinction has begun to trouble me.”

Shah thought of the note.

PUBLIC SAFETY REQUIREMENT.

DO NOT REMOVE.

Anton went on.

“The mistake engineers make is assuming that because a barrier can be overcome, overcoming it constitutes progress.”

He looked briefly towards the camera.

“It does not.”

Another slide appeared.

It contained no equations.

Only a sentence.

ACCESS IS NOT PERMISSION.

Anton turned to look at it.

“I don't know whether the boundary can respond. I don't know whether response is even the correct word. But if we continue increasing resolution, eventually I expect the system to produce something that makes continued observation undesirable.”

A woman in the audience asked what he meant.

Anton considered his answer for several seconds.

“A warning would be the human word.”

Shah felt something move coldly through him.

He stopped the video.

On the desk beside him lay a printed copy of the Mann image.

The poster.

Davey's face.

MISSING.

For months everybody had treated the image as though it belonged to Davey's disappearance.

Cause and consequence had become psychologically inseparable.

VUBU had shown the poster.

Then Davey disappeared.

Therefore the two events belonged to one another.

The hacker theories assumed it.

The conspiracy theories assumed it.

The newspapers assumed it.

The police, despite knowing better, had begun by assuming it too.

Shah looked at Davey's photograph.

A warning.

He resumed the video.

Anton was near the end of the talk now.

“What happens after the fourth stage?” someone asked.

Anton smiled again.

“We stop.”

“Why?”

“Because fear is more persuasive than wonder.”

The audience laughed softly.

Anton didn't.

“Wonder makes you open the door. Practicality makes you install the door in every house. Boredom makes you forget the door is there.”

He looked towards the blank screen.

“Fear makes you close it.”

The talk ended shortly afterwards.

There was applause.

Anton thanked the audience and began gathering his papers.

Then somebody asked one final question.

The conference microphone had already been switched off. The voice was distant, almost lost beneath the movement of chairs.

Anton looked up.

The person repeated it.

This time Shah could make out the words.

“If it isn't prediction, what is it doing?”

Anton stopped gathering his papers.

He appeared to consider whether the question required another explanation.

Then he shook his head.

“No. That's the mistake.”

The room quietened again.

“Everyone keeps imagining the machine here, looking forward to there.”

He pointed somewhere beyond the stage.

“But that's only because that's how you experience it.”

A pause.

“The machine isn't looking forward.”

Anton picked up his papers.

“It's looking around.”

The recording ended.

Shah remained where he was.

For months, they had investigated the VUBU image and the disappearance as though one must explain the other.

Perhaps that had been the mistake.

There was still no evidence that VUBU had anything to do with what happened to Davey Mann.

There was only a nine-year-old boy who had left home for school one morning and never arrived.

And somewhere, Shah thought, there was still an answer to that.
