After miles and miles of driving north, the GPS told us it was only 1 mile until we reached our destination- a cozy cabin nestled in the heart of the Canadian wilderness. This was not just any cabin but a place we had visited every summer since childhood, filled with cherished memories and the echoes of laughter.
As we neared the cabin, a wave of nostalgia washed over me. I couldn't help but reminisce about the countless summers we had spent here, the car always echoing with laughter. It was a journey I had never embarked on alone.
As I turned off the gravel road, I was acutely aware of the wildlife around me. Northern Canada's reputation for black bears and moose was not to be taken lightly. I dreaded carefully, knowing that a mother bear and her cubs were known to frequent the area near the cabin.it
As I reached for the key, my hand froze in mid-air. The familiar spot where the key always hung was empty. A rush of shock and confusion swept over me, only to be replaced by the sound of laughter from inside the cabin. It was laughter that didn't belong to me, a clear sign of an unexpected visitor.
Standing at the door, I was caught in a moment of indecision. I was supposed to be the only cabin member, so who could be inside? The mystery hung in the air, wrapping me in suspense and curiosity.
Peering through the window, I spotted a lone figure, a striking man with a phone in hand. His presence didn't seem menacing, so I decided to approach the door.
As I prepared to enter, something caught my eye-the welcome mat. It was different, not the one I remembered. The cabin had undergone several changes, upgrades that I hadn't anticipated. This unexpected transformation added a new layer of intrigue to the moment.
Hello, hello, is somebody here? It's Charlie.
Well, hello there. I was starting to get worried and thought you would not make it.
Well, to start, I would like to introduce myself. I am Rene Rogers. I am one of the cabin owners and hope you dont mind company.
Not at all. I was reluctant to come here on my own, and I look forward to having you here with me. I will keep to myself if you wish, and I have plenty of food to fill the fridge, so I will try not to bother you.
"Charlie," you are no bother at all; make yourself at home, and I really hope I dont get in your way. Also, there is no fee for staying here, as I am technically your guest. I feel that I will be responsible for all costs. Please dont feel you have to wait on me, relax and enjoy.
If you like boating, I have my boat in the water. If you wish to go after dinner, let me know.
Not at all what Charlie thought was going to happen, actually she felt it was going to be a lonely time there. Possibly she thought of doing some photography, maybe some writing and working on a few crafts. Having Rene with her was hopefully going to be amazing, although she had not been with a man in so many years she was a little nervous.

After unpacking and getting herself settled in the front bedroom (looking out over the lake)
Charlie just layed down on the bed and for a very long time had so much excitement running through her. How did she go from dreading a holiday to feeling like a young girl who was excited to get to know Rene.
After coming out of the room Rene had prepared a lovely display of cheese and crackers, grapes and strawberries and a nice rinot. (How on earth did he know how much she loved doing this?)
Relaxing on the deck, enjoying the snacks and looking over the beautiful lake the two of them really started to get to know each other.
Apparently Rene had taken a early retirement and was hoping to live at the cottage. After 30 years of marriage his wife left him for a younger man and he was still struggling to get over it. He was a lawyer for many years, tryed to give his wife and family the best he could but she was never happy.
Feeling bad, Rene explained to Charlie that he was so sorry for sharing all of this when she came to enjoy her vacation.
Charlie told him it was all good, we have a lot in common. Although her husband left her years ago and she raised her children. Looking back she remember how she felt when he left. Devastated to be honest.
A school teacher for years but just recently took an early retirement to possibly start travelling to just doing things that she enjoyed.
The two of them had lots to talk about so they basically sat and chatted and later walked along the lake.
