"That's it. I've had enough. You'd better do as I say, or I'll file for divorce," Desiree threatened. Her husband Ben, however, barely looked up.
"Go ahead," he said coldly.
"Are you being serious?" Desiree asked in disbelief. "Aren't you going to ask me to stay?"
"Why?" Ben challenged her. "It isn't the first time you threatened to divorce me anyway. In fact, you have used this threat multiple times over the past 6 months. Every week, you would pull off this same stunt over trivial matters. I've had enough." He then threw a stack of photos on the coffee table, which showed Desiree with another man. "I've been trailing you over the past few weeks. You've been having an affair with another man. No matter what you say, I'll divorce you."
"Wait," Desiree said. "If we get a divorce, what will happen to Saul and Gillian? They will grow up without a mother." The mention of their children Saul and Gillian made Ben's blood boil. "The nerve of you to mention Saul and Gillian," he said angrily. "Do you know what you've done? You left them alone when you go out to meet your affair partner, and the door is left open. How can you do such a thing?"
"Saul is already 7 years old. He can take care of things," Desiree argued, but Ben raised his hand to dismiss her.
"That's enough," he said. "The fact that you left a 7 year old and 5 year old alone at home to meet your lover and with the door wide open shows that you don't care about the children at all. Stop using them as an excuse. And to be exact, it was you who wanted a divorce, so I'm just granting your wish. If you don't agree to the divorce, I'll bring this matter to court."
Realizing the gravity of the situation, Desiree panicked. She tried to get Ben to change her mind, but he took the kids and left. Eventually, Ben filed for divorce. Owing to irrefutable evidence that Desiree had an affair and the fact that she left 2 young kids alone at home with the door wide open, the court granted Ben full custody of the kids, while Desiree was left with nothing. In addition, she had to pay damages to Ben and child support. Ben moved on from the divorce and devoted his time and effort into raising Saul and Gillian, while Desiree was left alone to reap the consequences of her actions.
