Sometimes I wonder what kind of world we are becoming. I find myself asking this question whenever I read some of the stories that appear on the internet—stories so horrifying that, for a moment, you want to believe they cannot possibly be true. Then you read the details, and you realize they are. A husband and wife murdered in their own home. An elderly person attacked by the very person employed to care for them. A child harmed by someone the family trusted. A business owner betrayed by an employee. A friend turning against a friend.

What troubles me most is that, in many of these stories, the person responsible is not a complete stranger. It is someone who had been allowed into the home, someone who knew the family's routines and vulnerabilities, someone who had been trusted. Recently, I came across a story about a man and his wife who were allegedly murdered by their houseboy. I read it once, then found myself going back to it. The details stayed with me long after I had stopped reading. It was not only the horror of two people losing their lives; it was the thought of what it means when the person accused of taking those lives was someone who had been welcomed into their home.

A home is supposed to be the place where we feel safest. It is where we close the gates, lock the doors and allow ourselves to relax. We sleep there believing that the people and things within those walls are familiar and secure. Yet sometimes, the danger we spend so much time looking for outside may already be inside. That thought is frightening, but it also raises another question: how are we supposed to live if we become afraid of everyone we allow into our lives?

We cannot regard every house help as a potential murderer, every employee as a potential thief, every neighbour as a possible threat or every stranger as an enemy. Trust is woven into almost every part of human life. A mother must trust someone to care for her child while she works; families depend on people to help run their homes; employers entrust their businesses to employees; neighbours depend on one another; friends share things they would never tell strangers; and husbands and wives build their lives around the belief that they can rely on each other. Without trust, relationships become impossible. But perhaps these disturbing stories remind us that trust should never mean blindness. We can trust people while maintaining sensible boundaries, give opportunities without surrendering our judgment, and remain compassionate without becoming careless. We can believe in the goodness of people while accepting that we will never know everything about another human being.

Human beings are complicated. We often see only the part of someone they choose to show us. We may know how a person behaves at work, how they speak to us in the morning or how respectfully they treat our family, but we may know very little about what they are carrying inside. Someone may be struggling with anger, disappointment, resentment, financial pressure or personal pain that we know nothing about. None of these things makes a person dangerous, and it would be wrong to assume that they do. They simply remind us that the person we think we know may have a private world we cannot fully see.

That is why the aftermath of tragedy can be so painful. People often say, “I never thought he could do that,” or “She was such a nice person,” or “There was nothing to suggest this would happen.” Sometimes, that is undoubtedly true. People can commit terrible acts without giving those around them any obvious warning. But sometimes, when the shock begins to settle, people remember things they had previously dismissed—a strange comment, an unusual change in behaviour, growing resentment or an incident that seemed too insignificant to matter. Then comes the question that can haunt people for years: Why didn't we see it?

Perhaps because we do not expect darkness from people we have welcomed into the light. Familiarity makes us comfortable. We see someone every day, watch them perform their duties, exchange greetings with them and gradually stop thinking of them as someone we need to know more about. They become part of the background of our lives, and in that familiarity we may forget that every person has a private world we cannot fully see.

The horrifying stories we encounter online therefore deserve more than a moment of shock before we scroll to the next story. They should make us think about the fragile arrangements on which much of our everyday lives depend. They remind us that life can change unexpectedly, that people can surprise us, and that the people around us may have stories we know nothing about.

I do not ask these questions because I want us to become suspicious of one another. I ask them because perhaps we have sometimes confused familiarity with knowledge, kindness with safety and trust with certainty. There must be a way to remain compassionate without becoming careless and trusting without becoming blind.

Maybe that is where this journey begins.

Because sometimes the stranger we fear is not standing outside the gate.

Sometimes, the stranger was never outside.

Sometimes, we invited them in.

Most people do not become part of our lives all at once.

It happens gradually.

Someone is introduced to us by a friend. Someone applies for a job and, after the necessary conversations, begins working in our home. A neighbour moves in next door. A new colleague joins the office. Someone begins helping an elderly parent. Before long, the unfamiliar face becomes familiar, and familiarity has a way of making us lower our guard.

We stop wondering who they are because we see them every day.

That is how relationships are built. It is also how trust develops.

In many homes, the people who work there eventually become more than employees. They become part of the rhythm of family life. They know who wakes up early, who comes home late, which child is preparing for examinations and which parent is usually away on business. They may know when salaries are paid, where important documents are kept and which family member is likely to leave the house unlocked.

Most of the time, this knowledge is harmless.

It is simply what happens when people share space.

But when we hear stories of terrible crimes committed by someone within a household, that ordinary familiarity suddenly looks different. We begin to understand how much access another person may have had without anyone thinking of it as access at all.

The person who knows your routine does not necessarily intend to harm you. The employee who knows where you keep your valuables is not automatically a thief. The neighbour who knows when you travel is not necessarily watching your house for the wrong reasons.

That distinction matters.

Fear can easily turn ordinary people into suspects, and suspicion can destroy the very trust that allows communities to function. The purpose of being cautious should not be to see evil everywhere. It should be to recognize that good judgment is part of protecting the people and things entrusted to us.

Perhaps we have become too comfortable with the idea that knowing someone for a long time means knowing them completely.

But time reveals habits, not necessarily hearts.

We may work beside someone for ten years and know very little about what they struggle with privately. We may greet a neighbour every morning without knowing what is happening in their home. We may employ someone for years and never understand the pressures they carry outside the workplace.

This does not mean that everyone has a hidden agenda. Far from it. Most people go about their lives without wanting to hurt anyone. But human beings are capable of change, and circumstances can expose parts of a person that have remained hidden for years.

Sometimes financial desperation changes a person's judgment.

Sometimes resentment grows quietly.

Sometimes an unresolved grievance becomes an obsession.

Sometimes anger is allowed to mature until it becomes something much darker.

And sometimes there is no warning at all.

That is perhaps the most difficult part to accept.

We like to believe that terrible things come with obvious signs. We imagine that the dangerous person must look dangerous, speak differently or behave in a way that immediately alerts everyone around them.

Real life is rarely so convenient.

A person capable of doing something terrible may still laugh with you at breakfast. They may greet your children warmly. They may attend family gatherings and appear perfectly ordinary.

That is why, after a tragedy, people often struggle to reconcile the person they knew with the person who committed the act.

It couldn't have been him.

She would never do such a thing.

We trusted him completely.

Sometimes those statements come from people who simply cannot accept what has happened. At other times, they reveal something deeper: we construct versions of people in our minds, and once that picture is established, we tend to interpret everything through it.

The reliable employee remains reliable even when something begins to change.

The quiet neighbour remains harmless.

The friendly house help remains trustworthy.

The person we have known for years remains the person we believe we know.

Perhaps that is one of the reasons warning signs can be so difficult to recognize. We do not always ignore them because they are invisible. Sometimes we ignore them because they do not fit the story we have already created about the person.

A strange remark becomes a joke.

A sudden change in behaviour becomes a bad week.

An argument becomes a disagreement that will eventually pass.

A growing distance becomes something we decide not to question.

And life continues.

Until something happens that forces everyone to look back.

Then the insignificant details suddenly seem significant.

The conversation nobody thought much about.

The behaviour that seemed unusual.

The complaint that was dismissed.

The anger that was explained away.

The question that nobody asked.

But hindsight is cruel. It gives us clarity after we no longer have the opportunity to use it.

Perhaps that is why these stories should not simply leave us frightened. They should leave us thoughtful.

We should learn to pay attention without becoming paranoid. We should establish boundaries without treating people with contempt. We should know who has access to our homes, our children, our finances and our private lives without assuming that everyone with access intends to misuse it.

There is wisdom in knowing people gradually.

There is wisdom in checking what needs to be checked.

There is wisdom in listening when someone raises a genuine concern.

And there is wisdom in remembering that kindness does not require us to surrender common sense.

The people we let into our lives deserve dignity and respect. But the people we love also deserve protection.

Perhaps the real challenge is learning to hold both truths at the same time.

Because the world does not need us to become afraid of one another.

It needs us to become wiser about one another.

And sometimes, wisdom begins with something very simple:

Pay attention.

After a tragedy, everyone becomes a detective.

People begin going through old conversations, remembering incidents that seemed insignificant and connecting details that had once appeared unrelated. Someone suddenly remembers a strange comment made months earlier. Another recalls a change in behaviour. Someone else remembers an argument that was dismissed as ordinary.

And then someone inevitably says, “There were signs.”

But were there?

Or do we simply become better at seeing patterns after we already know the ending?

That question has stayed with me.

When something terrible happens, hindsight can make everything look obvious. The angry conversation suddenly appears important. The unusual behaviour seems like a warning. The complaint that was ignored begins to look like evidence of something much bigger.

But life does not come with subtitles telling us which moments matter.

Most of the time, we are simply living.

We wake up, go to work, take care of our families, pay bills, answer messages and deal with the ordinary frustrations of everyday life. Someone may have a bad day, lose their temper, become withdrawn or complain about their circumstances, and we may think nothing of it.

People have problems.

People have difficult days.

People disagree.

People become frustrated.

We cannot treat every change in behaviour as evidence that something terrible is about to happen.

Yet there are moments when our instincts tell us that something is not quite right.

A person may suddenly become unusually secretive. Someone who was once calm may become increasingly aggressive. A long-standing employee may begin behaving differently. A relative may repeatedly express resentment. Someone may begin crossing boundaries that they previously respected.

What do we do when we notice these things?

Often, nothing.

We tell ourselves that we are probably overthinking.

We do not want to offend anyone.

We do not want to appear ungrateful.

We do not want to judge someone unfairly.

And sometimes, we simply do not have enough information to know whether what we are seeing is meaningful.

That is the difficult space between intuition and evidence.

Our instincts can sometimes alert us to something we have not consciously processed, but instincts can also be wrong. Fear, prejudice, past experiences and assumptions can make an innocent person appear threatening.

So the answer cannot be to follow every suspicion.

Perhaps the answer is to become more observant without becoming judgmental.

There is a difference.

Observation says, “Something has changed.”

Judgment says, “I know why it has changed.”

We may notice the first without pretending to know the second.

That distinction can protect us from two very different mistakes: ignoring genuine concerns and unfairly accusing people who have done nothing wrong.

I think about families who discover, after a tragedy, that someone had complained about a particular person long before anything happened. Sometimes the complaint was taken seriously. Sometimes it was dismissed. Sometimes nobody remembers it until afterward.

Why do we dismiss warnings?

Because accepting them can be inconvenient.

Taking a concern seriously may mean having an uncomfortable conversation. It may mean investigating someone we have known for years. It may mean admitting that our judgment about a person might have been wrong.

And human beings do not like being wrong.

We also do not like disrupting peace.

In families, we often hear, “Leave it. It is nothing.”

At work, we say, “That is just how he is.”

In relationships, we say, “She is only angry.”

Sometimes those explanations are perfectly reasonable.

Other times, they become excuses for avoiding a problem.

There is another reason we miss warning signs: we often judge behaviour according to the version of the person we already know.

If someone has been dependable for years, one troubling incident may be explained away because it does not fit our understanding of them. If someone has always been friendly, we may find it difficult to take seriously the possibility that they could behave badly.

Our history with people influences what we are willing to see.

That does not make us foolish.

It makes us human.

The danger is allowing familiarity to become an excuse for ignoring reality.

Perhaps one of the greatest lessons from these disturbing stories is therefore not that we should become suspicious of everyone, but that we should become more willing to pay attention when something genuinely changes.

Ask questions.

Listen.

Observe.

Set boundaries when necessary.

And when a concern is serious, do not silence it simply because discussing it makes everyone uncomfortable.

None of this guarantees safety. There is no perfect system for predicting human behaviour, and no amount of caution can eliminate every danger.

That is a painful truth.

We want life to give us warning before disaster arrives. We want the dangerous person to announce themselves clearly. We want the final moment to make sense of everything that came before it.

But sometimes there is no clear warning.

Sometimes the signs are ambiguous.

Sometimes people misread them.

And sometimes there were no signs at all.

That is why we must be careful about judging victims after tragedy has occurred. It is easy to sit safely afterward and say, “They should have known.”

We were not there.

We did not hear every conversation.

We did not see every interaction.

We did not know what they knew at the time.

Hindsight gives us information they did not have.

Perhaps the better lesson is not to blame those who failed to foresee the unforeseeable, but to encourage all of us to become more attentive to the people and situations around us.

Not fearful.

Not suspicious.

Just awake.

Because sometimes the smallest change in behaviour means nothing.

And sometimes it means everything.

The tragedy is that we usually discover which one it was only afterward.

Betrayal is one of the most painful experiences a human being can endure because it does not simply take something away from us. It changes the meaning of what we thought we had.

When a stranger hurts us, there is a certain distance between the wound and the relationship. We may be angry, frightened or devastated, but somewhere in our minds we understand that the person was never truly part of our world.

Betrayal is different.

Betrayal comes from someone who was already inside.

That is why the stories of people being harmed by those close to them are so disturbing. We are not only confronted with the act itself; we are forced to consider how someone could cross a boundary that had been created by familiarity, kindness and access.

Perhaps that is why betrayal can hurt more than ordinary conflict. Conflict can happen between people who disagree. Betrayal happens when one person violates something the other believed was safe.

A friend shares your confidence and later uses it against you. An employee abuses the access given to them. A relative takes advantage of the trust placed in them. A partner breaks an agreement that both people believed defined their relationship.

The circumstances may differ, but the wound has something in common:

“I trusted you.”

There are many reasons people betray others, and not all of them are easy to understand. Greed can overpower loyalty. Resentment can grow quietly. Jealousy can distort judgment. Desperation can push someone toward decisions they would once have considered unthinkable. Anger, humiliation, revenge or a sense of having been wronged can also influence behaviour.

But understanding these forces does not excuse what someone chooses to do.

A difficult life does not give anyone permission to destroy another person's life.

That distinction is important because, whenever a terrible act occurs, people sometimes rush to search for an explanation. They want to know what caused it, what the victim did, what the perpetrator had experienced and what might have pushed the situation to that point.

Those questions can help us understand human behaviour.

But explanation is not justification.

Sometimes people suffer terribly and still choose not to hurt others. Others experience hardship and respond by becoming cruel. The difference often lies in choices, character, circumstances and the support available to a person.

There is another uncomfortable reality: we sometimes create relationships in which one person becomes dependent on the other, and dependency can produce complicated emotions.

An employee may feel undervalued.

A family member may feel overlooked.

A friend may believe the relationship has become one-sided.

A person may compare their life with someone else's and begin to feel that they deserve what the other person has.

These feelings do not inevitably lead to betrayal. Most people experience disappointment, jealousy or resentment without committing terrible acts. But when negative emotions are allowed to grow without being addressed, they can change the way a person sees those around them.

The person who once represented opportunity may begin to represent injustice.

The employer who once offered a job may become, in the employee's mind, the person standing between them and what they believe they deserve.

The friend who once provided comfort may become the person they blame for their unhappiness.

That transformation can be frightening because the external relationship may appear unchanged while the internal relationship has already shifted.

And perhaps that is one of the hardest things about betrayal.

It can begin long before the betrayed person realizes anything is wrong.

One person is still living inside the relationship they thought they had.

The other may already be living inside a completely different version of it.

That is why some betrayals seem to come from nowhere.

For one person, the relationship was intact.

For the other, something had been breaking for a long time.

Still, we must be careful not to turn this into a story where every unhappy person is a threat. Life does not work that way. People are entitled to their frustrations. They are entitled to complain, disagree, feel disappointed and even walk away from relationships that no longer serve them.

The line is crossed when pain becomes an excuse for harming another person.

Perhaps what we should learn is not how to eliminate betrayal—we cannot—but how to build relationships in which grievances can be expressed before resentment becomes destructive.

People need places where they can say, “I am unhappy.”

They need to be able to say, “I feel overlooked.”

They need to be able to say, “I think you have treated me unfairly.”

And sometimes, they simply need someone willing to listen.

A person who feels heard may still disagree with us, but silence can sometimes allow resentment to grow unchecked.

This is true in families, workplaces, friendships and communities.

We spend so much time talking about security in terms of locks, gates, cameras and passwords. Those things matter. But there is another kind of security that is harder to measure: the quality of the relationships around us.

Do people feel respected?

Do they feel they can speak honestly?

Are grievances handled fairly?

Are boundaries understood?

Are we paying attention to changes in relationships before they become crises?

No system can guarantee safety. No relationship can eliminate the possibility of betrayal.

But perhaps we can make our homes, workplaces and communities places where people are less likely to feel invisible, unheard or trapped by resentment.

And perhaps, at the same time, we must accept that some people will still make terrible choices.

That is the part we cannot control.

We can offer kindness.

We can offer fairness.

We can offer opportunities.

We can treat people with dignity.

But ultimately, every person remains responsible for what they choose to do with what they have been given.

Betrayal reminds us of something uncomfortable about trust: giving someone access to your life is an act of vulnerability.

We do it anyway.

Because without vulnerability, there can be no genuine friendship, no meaningful family life, no partnership and no community.

So perhaps the answer is not to stop trusting.

Perhaps it is to understand that trust is something we give, something we nurture and something we should never take for granted.

Because the deepest wounds are not always caused by people who hated us.

Sometimes they are caused by people we once believed would never hurt us.

We have been taught to be afraid of strangers.

From childhood, many of us heard the same warnings: do not talk to strangers, do not follow strangers, do not accept things from people you do not know, and never open the door to someone unfamiliar.

The message was simple.

Danger was somewhere outside.

It was the unfamiliar face. The person we had never seen before. The person whose intentions we could not read.

But life has a way of complicating the lessons we learned as children.

As we grow older, we discover that some of the greatest threats do not arrive looking threatening at all. They may come with a familiar face, a recommendation from someone we know, a polite introduction or a history that gives us no reason to be suspicious.

A stranger stands outside the gate, and we become cautious.

Someone we have known for years walks through it, and we barely think twice.

That difference is understandable. Familiarity gives us comfort. We naturally feel safer around people whose names we know, whose faces we recognize and whose lives appear to intersect with ours.

But familiarity is not the same as character.

Knowing someone's name does not mean knowing their intentions. Knowing where someone works does not tell us everything about who they are. Even knowing a person for years cannot give us complete access to their thoughts, their struggles or their private decisions.

This is not a reason to distrust everyone.

It is a reason to understand the limits of what we know.

Perhaps one of the greatest mistakes we make is assuming that people remain exactly as we first knew them. We meet someone at one stage of their life and unconsciously freeze that image in our minds. If they were kind when we met them, we continue to see them as kind. If they were dependable, we assume they will always be dependable. If they helped us during a difficult period, we may find it almost impossible to imagine them behaving differently.

But people change.

Circumstances change.

Relationships change.

Sometimes people change for the better. Sometimes they become bitter, desperate, resentful or reckless. And sometimes the change is so gradual that nobody notices until the consequences become impossible to ignore.

That is why the idea of the "stranger" can be misleading.

The real issue is not whether someone is familiar or unfamiliar.

It is whether we have allowed familiarity to replace discernment.

There is a delicate balance here. We cannot interrogate every person who enters our lives as though they are a potential criminal. We cannot create a society where every act of kindness is met with suspicion. Nor should we judge people simply because their circumstances are different from ours.

A person's background does not determine their character.

Their occupation does not determine their character.

Their social position does not determine their character.

Character is revealed through choices.

And choices are revealed over time.

That is why responsible trust matters.

If someone is given responsibility, there should be appropriate boundaries. If a person has access to sensitive information, there should be reasonable safeguards. If children or vulnerable people are involved, care should be taken over who is entrusted with them.

These precautions should not be understood as insults.

They are simply part of living responsibly.

We lock our doors not because we believe everyone outside is dangerous, but because we understand that security matters.

We protect our passwords without assuming everyone we know wants to steal from us.

We keep important documents secure without accusing everyone in the house of wanting them.

The same principle can apply to people.

Boundaries do not necessarily mean mistrust.

Sometimes they simply mean wisdom.

There is also something else we should remember: the person who betrays us may not have entered our lives intending to do so.

A relationship can change.

Circumstances can change.

A person's priorities can change.

Something that begins innocently can become complicated over time.

That makes the question of safety even more difficult because we are not dealing with a simple battle between good people and bad people. We are dealing with human beings, and human beings are capable of contradiction.

Someone can be loving in one relationship and destructive in another.

Someone can be generous toward one person and resentful toward another.

Someone can do good things and still make terrible choices.

Perhaps that is why we should resist the temptation to divide the world too neatly into good people and bad people.

The world is more complicated than that.

But complexity should not become an excuse for naivety.

We can acknowledge that people are complicated while still protecting ourselves and those we love.

We can offer people dignity while maintaining boundaries.

We can give people opportunities while ensuring that responsibility comes with accountability.

And we can remain open-hearted without leaving every door completely unlocked.

Maybe that is the lesson hidden inside some of the most disturbing stories we encounter.

The problem is not always that we trusted someone.

Sometimes it is that we believed trust meant we no longer needed to pay attention.

The stranger we feared was outside the gate.

We watched the road.

We watched the windows.

We worried about the unfamiliar face passing by.

Meanwhile, someone familiar was already inside.

And perhaps the most unsettling realization is this:

The person we need to understand most may not be the person we have never met.

It may be the person we think we already know.

How well do we really know the people around us?

It is a simple question, but the older I become, the less simple the answer seems.

We know people's names. We know where they work, where they live, who they are married to and perhaps the names of their children. We know the stories they have told us about their childhood, their struggles and their dreams. We know how they behave in public and, if we are close enough, we may know how they behave at home.

Yet even then, there are parts of every person that remain hidden from us.

Every human being has an inner world.

There are thoughts that are never spoken, disappointments that are never shared, fears that are carefully concealed and memories that a person may carry for decades without telling anyone. Some people become very good at keeping their private struggles separate from the face they present to the world.

That is not necessarily deception.

Sometimes it is simply being human.

We all have parts of ourselves that belong only to us.

The problem is that we sometimes mistake access for complete knowledge. Because someone talks to us every day, we assume we understand them. Because they have been part of our lives for many years, we believe there can be no surprises left.

But time does not automatically reveal everything.

You can sit beside someone for twenty years and still discover something about them that you never knew.

Sometimes that discovery is beautiful.

A hidden talent.

An unexpected kindness.

A sacrifice they made without telling anyone.

A private act of generosity that nobody witnessed.

Other discoveries can be painful.

A secret relationship.

A financial problem.

A long-standing resentment.

A decision made in silence.

A part of their life they deliberately kept away from you.

This is why the people we think we know can sometimes surprise us.

Marriage provides perhaps the clearest example.

Two people can share a home, raise children, sleep in the same bed and spend decades building a life together, yet each person still has an interior world the other cannot completely enter.

That does not mean the marriage is false.

It means that intimacy has limits.

The same is true of friendship. We may know our closest friend's laughter, their favourite food, their frustrations and the stories they tell repeatedly, yet there may still be pain they have never found the courage to share.

Even parents do not know everything about their children.

Children grow into people with experiences, relationships and fears that their parents may never fully understand.

Perhaps accepting this limitation is not a reason to become suspicious. Perhaps it is a reason to become more curious about one another.

Instead of assuming we know someone, we can continue to ask.

How are you really doing?

What is troubling you?

What are you afraid of?

What have you been carrying alone?

What has changed?

Sometimes a person does not need advice. They simply need someone to notice that something is different.

Yet there is another side to this.

We should not imagine that if we ask enough questions, we will become capable of predicting everything another person might do. We cannot.

People retain their freedom to make choices.

Someone can be treated well and still make a terrible decision. Someone can receive love and still choose betrayal. Someone can have every opportunity to do the right thing and decide otherwise.

That is one of the hardest truths about human behaviour.

We can influence people.

We can support them.

We can teach them.

We can love them.

But we cannot completely control who they become.

This is particularly painful when the person who changes is someone we have invested years in.

We naturally ask ourselves whether we should have known.

Whether we missed something.

Whether we failed them.

Whether there was something we could have done differently.

Sometimes there may indeed be lessons to learn from those questions.

But we should also be careful not to take responsibility for another person's choices.

Understanding someone does not mean controlling them.

Knowing someone well does not mean possessing their future.

And loving someone does not guarantee that they will always make choices that honour that love.

Perhaps the healthiest way to live is to accept both sides of this reality.

We should make an effort to know people deeply, while recognizing that no human being can ever be known completely.

We should listen when people speak, but also understand that silence can conceal things.

We should appreciate consistency, while remembering that circumstances can change people.

Most importantly, we should resist the dangerous belief that familiarity makes us invulnerable.

The people closest to us can know us better than anyone else, but closeness does not make either person incapable of causing harm.

At the same time, we should not allow that truth to destroy our capacity for love.

If we become convinced that nobody can truly be known, we may stop allowing anyone close enough to know us at all.

And that would be another kind of tragedy.

Human beings need connection.

We need people who know our history.

People who notice when our voice changes.

People who recognize when we are pretending to be fine.

People who remember who we were before life became difficult.

We may never know another person completely.

But perhaps the goal was never complete knowledge.

Perhaps the goal is to keep paying attention.

To remain curious.

To listen beyond the words.

To notice without immediately judging.

And to remember that every person we meet is carrying a story that is larger than the part they have chosen to show us.

That thought should make us more compassionate.

But it should also make us humble.

Because while we spend our lives trying to understand other people, there is one person we may understand least of all:

We have become very good at looking fine. This does not mean that every difficult person is secretly suffering, or that hidden pain explains harmful behaviour. Most people experience hardship without hurting anyone, and struggling does not remove a person's responsibility for their choices. Someone's circumstances may help us understand their behaviour, but they do not automatically excuse it. Pain may explain anger, but it does not justify abuse; financial difficulty may explain desperation, but it does not justify theft; resentment may explain hostility, but it does not excuse violence.

Yet this distinction becomes important when we try to understand the disturbing stories we encounter every day. After something terrible happens, people naturally begin searching for reasons. Was there financial pressure? Had resentment been building? Was there an unresolved conflict? Had something happened that nobody knew about? Sometimes these questions reveal important circumstances; sometimes they do not. Human behaviour is too complicated to be reduced to one event, one disappointment or one emotion.

Two people can face the same hardship and choose entirely different paths. One may ask for help, another may withdraw, another may become angry, while someone else may find a constructive way through the difficulty. Circumstances influence us, but they do not determine every choice we make.

Perhaps that is why we need to learn the difference between noticing and assuming. We can notice that someone has changed without deciding that we know why. We can listen when a person seems troubled without turning their struggle into a diagnosis. We can show compassion without abandoning accountability.

Sometimes a simple question—“Are you really okay?”—can create an opening for an honest conversation. It may not solve anything, but it can remind someone that they have been seen. In families, friendships and workplaces, that small act of attention can matter.

The same applies to us. We are often so committed to appearing strong that we hide our own struggles behind routine and politeness. We say we are fine because explaining the truth feels exhausting. We smile because we do not want sympathy. We continue moving because stopping might force us to acknowledge what we have been carrying.

But what we refuse to acknowledge does not necessarily disappear. Unresolved pain can affect the way we relate to others, the decisions we make and the way we interpret the world. That is why emotional honesty matters—not because every problem will lead to something terrible, but because people deserve an opportunity to deal with their struggles before those struggles begin to consume them.

At the same time, we must resist the temptation to turn every hidden struggle into a warning sign. Not every quiet person is troubled. Not every angry person is dangerous. Not every unhappy employee is resentful. Not every change in behaviour points toward something sinister. Sometimes a person is simply having a difficult period in life.

The challenge is to remain observant without becoming suspicious, compassionate without becoming naive, and willing to listen without pretending that we can know everything about another person.

Perhaps that is what it means to look beyond the smile.

Not to search for darkness, but to remember that there is usually more to a person than what we see.

We should be slower to judge, more willing to listen and humble enough to admit that we do not know the whole story.

Because a smile tells us what someone is willing to show us.

It does not tell us everything they carry.

We believe we have arrived at safety.

For many people, that feeling begins in childhood.

Home is where we expect to be protected. It is where we sleep without wondering who might enter during the night. It is where parents believe their children are safe, where families share meals and where ordinary routines create a sense of stability.

That is why violence within the home feels like such a profound violation.

It does not simply take a life or destroy property. It attacks our understanding of what home is supposed to mean.

When we hear of a family being harmed by someone who had access to their home, the question is not only “How could this have happened?” We also begin to wonder how anyone can feel completely safe again.

Imagine waking up one morning and realizing that the person you allowed through your door was the person you should have been protecting yourself from. Imagine discovering that someone knew your routines, your children's movements and the places you considered secure.

After hearing enough frightening stories, we may begin to imagine danger everywhere. We start questioning people who have done nothing wrong and interpreting ordinary behaviour through the lens of fear.

That is not the answer.

The answer is not to turn our homes into fortresses or our relationships into investigations. It is to take reasonable precautions while preserving our humanity.

Good security is not an expression of hatred.

Boundaries are not an accusation.

Knowing who has access to your home is not paranoia.

Keeping important information secure is not an insult to the people around you.

These are simply sensible ways of reducing risk.

There is also a responsibility that comes with employing people in our homes. A domestic worker is not merely another pair of hands. They are entering an intimate environment where they may witness family disagreements, financial matters, children's routines and private moments that outsiders would never see.

That relationship deserves respect on both sides.

Employers should treat people fairly, communicate expectations clearly and provide reasonable working conditions. Workers should respect the privacy, property and boundaries of the households that employ them. Where either side has serious concerns, they should be addressed rather than allowed to grow silently.

None of these measures can guarantee that something terrible will never happen.

Life does not offer that guarantee.

But there is wisdom in reducing unnecessary vulnerability.

Perhaps we have sometimes misunderstood what safety means. We think safety means believing that nothing bad will happen.

Safety means recognizing that bad things can happen and taking reasonable steps to protect ourselves without allowing fear to control our lives.

After reading so many disturbing stories, it would be easy to conclude that the world has become a frightening place.

Perhaps it has.

Every day, somewhere, something happens that reminds us how vulnerable human life can be. We read the details, shake our heads, ask how such a thing could happen and then move on to the next story.

But sometimes a story refuses to leave us.

It follows us into the quiet moments. It makes us look differently at the people around us and wonder whether the person sitting beside us is truly who we believe they are. It makes us question our judgment, our relationships and even the safety of the places we once considered untouchable.

That fear is understandable.

But I do not want fear to be the final lesson.

If fear becomes the way we live, then the terrible things we hear about have taken something from us that they should never be allowed to take: our ability to trust, love, welcome and believe in the goodness of another human being.

We cannot live as prisoners of every terrible story we read. We cannot look at every house help as a potential threat, every neighbour with suspicion or every stranger as an enemy. That would mean allowing darkness into our minds before it ever reaches our doors.

There must be another way.

Perhaps that way is wisdom—not the wisdom that tells us to trust nobody, but the wisdom that teaches us to trust carefully. We can pay attention without becoming suspicious, establish boundaries without treating people with contempt and protect ourselves without losing our compassion.

We have spent much of this journey asking how well we really know other people. Perhaps we should also ask how well we know ourselves.
