As she stood in front of the mirror, Emily couldn't shake off the feeling that something was off. She gazed at her reflection, but the girl staring back at her was not quite... herself. The eyes were the same, the hair was the same, but there was a subtle difference, a slight twist to the smile, a glint in the eye that didn't belong to her.
At first, Emily thought it was just her imagination playing tricks on her, but as the days went by, she began to notice strange things. The reflection would move on its own, or be dressed in clothes she didn't own. It would whisper to her, its voice a soft, mocking echo of her own.
One night, Emily decided to confront the stranger in the mirror. She approached the glass, her heart pounding, and demanded, "Who are you?"
The reflection smiled, its eyes glinting with a mischievous light. "I am you," it said, its voice a perfect imitation of Emily's own. "Or at least, I'm the you that you could have been."
As Emily watched in horror, the reflection began to change, its features shifting and morphing until it was no longer her own face that stared back at her, but a stranger's. A stranger who looked eerily like her, but with a sinister grin and eyes that seemed to hold a dark secret.
Emily turned and ran, fleeing the mirror and the stranger who lurked within. She never looked back, afraid of what she might see staring back at her.
From that day on, Emily avoided mirrors, afraid of the stranger who lurked within, waiting to pounce. She knew that she had seen something that was not meant to be seen, something that was not of this world. And she knew that she would never be able to look at herself in the same way again.
