The Runes of Midnight
Deep within the forgotten forest of Nethira, where the trees whispered secrets older than time, a sorcerer named Kael tread cautiously. Cloaked in shadows, he followed the faint glow of ancient runes etched into the forest floor. These symbols, legends said, were remnants of the Midnight Pact—a forbidden magic that granted unparalleled power but at a terrible price.
Kael had spent years preparing for this moment. The moon hung high in the sky, its pale light illuminating the twisted branches above. With his staff aglow, he reached the heart of the forest—a clearing bathed in an eerie, blue radiance.
In the center stood a massive stone altar, pulsing with energy. Surrounding it, spectral fireflies swirled, their light dimming and brightening as if they were alive and watching. Kael placed his hand on the altar, and the runes flared to life, forming a spiraling circle around him.
“Who dares awaken the Pact?” a voice thundered, seemingly from everywhere and nowhere at once.
“I am Kael of Vynira,” he declared. “I seek the power to save my people from the blight consuming our lands.”
The voice laughed, deep and chilling. “To save one thing, another must be sacrificed. Are you prepared to pay the price?”
Kael hesitated. The legends never spoke of the cost. Yet the faces of his starving kin flashed in his mind, and he nodded. “I am.”
The runes rose from the ground, encircling Kael in a vortex of light and shadow. Pain surged through him as the Pact bound itself to his soul. When the light faded, Kael stood transformed—his staff blazing with untamed energy, his eyes glowing with the power of the runes.
But as he turned to leave, the voice spoke again, softer now. “Remember, sorcerer, that which is given can also be taken. Wield the power wisely, or it will consume you.”
Kael stepped out of the clearing, the weight of his choice heavy on his shoulders. The forest seemed quieter now, as though holding its breath. Behind him, the runes dimmed, awaiting the next soul bold—or desperate—enough to summon their power.
