The receipts kept coming.

Always under the phone. Always folded just so. Always typed in the same thin, slightly off-center font. Like a receipt printer trying to whisper.

Peter stopped reading them after a while.

He’d glance at the top line—just enough to see that it was a new one—and then bin it. Same store, same format, same game. He wasn’t playing anymore.

But he still went in sometimes.

Three, maybe four times over the next few weeks. Just to watch.

The first time, it was a box of crackers. Nothing unusual. He didn’t buy it—but he stood near the counter with a bottle of water in his hand, pretending to shop.

A woman came in. Walked straight to the shelf. Took the exact box. Same brand. Same size. Same shelf spot.

She brought it to the counter.

No receipt was printed.

Peter didn’t say anything.

Second time, it was a lighter and a pack of gum.

Third time, a men’s razor and a Coke.

Each time, someone else fulfilled the receipt.

Each time, the till was silent.

Always the exact same item(s), at the exact same date & time printed on the receipt.

After a while, he stopped bringing his wallet.

He didn’t mention it to Janice. She seemed lighter lately, more cheerful. She hummed while she cooked. Kissed him on the cheek when she left for knitting group.

Peter said he was tired a lot. Stayed in. Listened to the house creak and settle around him.

The receipts still came. Every morning. Every one of them fulfilled.

Just not by him.

Then one Friday afternoon, Peter found himself on the other side of town for work—some software update on a point-of-sale system for a little insurance office. After it was done, he popped into a general store nearby to grab a drink.

It wasn’t a 7-Eleven. Just a regular corner store, half convenience, half junk.

As he stood in the back aisle by the fridges, he heard a voice rise near the counter.

“You keep giving me these receipts!”

It was a man’s voice—frustrated, shaking with anger.

“I don’t know how you’re doing it, but it’s not funny anymore, alright? You need to stop messing with me!”

Peter turned.

A guy in his late thirties—flushed face, sweating through his T-shirt—was holding a crumpled receipt in his hand and yelling at the woman behind the counter.

“Even when I don’t buy it, someone else does. I see what you’re doing.”

The woman just stared at him. Maybe confused. Maybe scared.

The guy crumpled the receipt tighter in his hand and backed away.

Peter couldn’t help himself.

He followed him out.

Outside, Peter caught up to him near the sidewalk.

“Hey,” he said. “I—I heard what you said in there. That’s happening to me, too.”

The guy turned fast, eyes wild.

“What?”

“I’m not part of it. I just—same thing. I get receipts. Mine are from a 7-Eleven across town. It’s been happening for months.”

The guy squinted, stepped back.

“So what, now you’re following me?”

“No. I just—look, at first I thought it was a prank. My wife, the cashiers—there was this whole thing. But it kept happening, way beyond a joke. And if it’s happening to you too—”

“You think that helps?”

Peter stopped talking.

“You think telling me you’re not in on this makes me feel better?”

“I’m not in on it.”

“Sure.”

The guy turned to walk away, then paused.

“You’re all in on it. You just don’t admit it.”

Peter reached out, but the guy flinched and pulled away.

“Don’t talk to me. Don’t follow me. Just leave me alone.”

Then he was gone.

Peter stood by the curb for a long time.

A car passed, then another. Somewhere, a dog barked.

He looked down and realized he had a receipt in his hand.

Not the man’s. His own.

He didn’t remember pulling it from his pocket.

But there it was.

Go to the store.
Hear him shout.
You talk to him.

He folded it, slowly, and walked to his car.
