The bus looked like it had survived several wars and was still waiting for someone to apologise.

Its faded blue paint had surrendered years ago, leaving behind patches of rust that climbed the body like old scars. One headlamp was slightly higher than the other, giving the bus the permanent expression of a tired man who had heard the same story too many times.

It coughed when it started.

Not metaphorically.

It actually coughed.

The engine growled, rattled, paused, reconsidered its life choices, then roared awake in a cloud of black smoke.

A conductor hanging halfway out of the door shouted the destination as though announcing the final departure from earth.

“CITY! CITY! CITY!”

People ran towards it.

Tetu watched them and wondered what was wrong with humanity.

Then he ran too.

Because this was the cheapest bus.

And when you are a university student going home for the long holiday, the difference between a comfortable bus and an uncomfortable one is sometimes the difference between eating supper tonight and drinking water confidently while telling yourself you are not hungry.

The bus filled quickly.

Too quickly.

Passengers squeezed into seats that seemed designed for people who had never heard of personal space. Those who missed seats stood in the aisle, gripping thin metal bars fixed along the roof.

The bars rattled whenever the bus moved.

So did the passengers.

Every bump sent a small wave of humanity backwards and forwards.

Tetu watched one man grab the metal rail with both hands as the bus lurched out of the station.

For a moment, the man’s feet left the ground.

Tetu almost laughed.

How does someone willingly pay money to suffer like this?

Then he remembered he had paid the same fare.

He looked out the window.

Some judgments are best abandoned before they become autobiographies.

The bus pulled away.

And with it came the smells.

Sweat.

Petrol.

Perfume.

Roasted maize.

Mandazi.

Boiled eggs.

Someone had packed meat.

Someone else had packed bananas.

There was also a smell Tetu could not identify, and after three minutes of trying, he decided that some mysteries were better left unsolved.

The windows rattled.

The metal bars clanged.

Someone’s child cried.

Someone’s phone played music from the back.

The conductor shouted.

The driver honked.

The bus groaned its way towards the city.

It was going to be a long journey.

Tetu settled into his seat and accepted his fate.

He had one goal.

Get home.

Save money.

Survive the journey.

Then he saw her.

And suddenly, getting home didn’t seem quite so urgent.

She was sitting a few rows ahead.

Lala.

He did not know her name yet.

He only knew that she was beautiful.

Not loudly beautiful.

Not the kind of beauty that demanded the room stop and look.

Hers was quieter.

The kind you noticed once, looked away from, then found yourself looking back at before you had even decided to.

She had deep brown skin that seemed to hold the afternoon light, soft features, full lips and an effortless elegance that made the battered bus around her look even more exhausted.

White headphones covered her ears.

Her attention was somewhere inside her phone.

She was completely unaware that a young man three rows behind had suddenly forgotten the entire purpose of his journey.

Tetu looked away.

Then looked again.

He adjusted himself in his seat.

For reasons he could not explain, he suddenly became very conscious of how he was sitting.

He was well built.

That much he knew.

Kefi had made sure of it.

Back in the neighbourhood, the two of them had built a makeshift gym out of stones, metal scraps and the sort of confidence possessed only by young men who have never consulted an actual fitness professional.

They lifted stones.

They carried stones.

They compared stones.

There was one problem.

None of the stones weighed the same.

“Bro,” Kefi had once told him, “one day you will have more muscle on one side than the other.”

Tetu had laughed.

“Then I’ll train the other side.”

“With what?”

Tetu had looked at the stones.

Kefi had looked at the stones.

Neither had an answer.

So Tetu had become strong anyway.

Strong enough to carry water.

Strong enough to work.

Strong enough to survive.

But apparently not strong enough to stop his heart from behaving foolishly around a beautiful stranger.

The bus grew hotter.

Lala removed one headphone.

She looked uncomfortable.

Then he noticed the little fan in her hand.

She waved it gently across her face.

Once.

Twice.

Again.

The window beside her was shut.

Tetu saw his opportunity.

He leaned forward.

“Excuse me.”

She turned.

For half a second, their eyes met.

Tetu forgot the sentence he had prepared.

“Can I… help you open the window?”

She glanced at it.

Then at him.

“It’s stuck.”

Tetu smiled.

“I can try.”

He stood.

This was good.

This was confident.

This was going somewhere.

He grabbed the window.

Pulled.

Nothing.

He pulled harder.

Nothing.

He adjusted his grip.

Pulled again.

The window remained exactly where it was.

A few passengers looked over.

Tetu could feel his reputation leaving his body.

He gave the window one final pull.

Nothing.

Lala smiled.

“It’s really stuck.”

Tetu nodded as though he had conducted a thorough engineering assessment.

“Yes.”

He sat down.

“I can confirm that.”

She laughed.

It was small.

But he heard it.

And suddenly losing to a window didn’t feel entirely like losing.

The bus continued.

Minutes became hours.

The landscape slowly changed outside.

Buildings disappeared.

Then shops.

Then crowds.

The city loosened its grip.

But inside the bus, the heat remained.

And then something happened.

Lala’s phone went black.

She pressed the power button.

Nothing.

Again.

Nothing.

Tetu noticed.

He had been noticing everything.

The time.

The distance.

The stops.

The way she kept checking the dead phone.

He knew exactly how many hours were left before they reached their destination.

And for the first time in his life, Tetu found himself hoping the journey would take longer.

He didn’t want to say goodbye to someone whose name he didn’t even know.

So when the bus stopped for a toilet break, Tetu moved quickly.

Too quickly.

He climbed down, stretched his legs and hurried back before Lala returned.

He did not want to miss his chance.

He sat there pretending he had simply returned early.

She came back.

Sat down.

Looked at her dead phone.

Tetu smiled.

“Phone finished?”

She nodded.

“Completely.”

“That is unfortunate.”

She looked at him.

“Why?”

He leaned back.

“Because now you have no choice but to talk to people.”

She laughed.

“And you’re volunteering?”

“I believe in community service.”

That was the beginning.

Not fireworks.

Not music.

Just two strangers on the cheapest bus travelling the longest possible route home.

They talked.

Small things at first.

Campus.

Home.

The journey.

The ridiculous bus.

The people standing.

The heat.

The food smells.

Then bigger things.

Dreams.

Family.

Life.

The things they wanted.

The things they feared.

The strange little hopes people carry quietly because saying them aloud sometimes makes them feel too fragile.

Tetu listened.

Really listened.

He liked the way she spoke.

He liked the way she laughed before finishing some of her own sentences.

He liked how she occasionally looked out the window as though the passing landscape had something to tell her.

And somewhere between one conversation and the next, Tetu stopped counting the hours until home.

He started counting the hours he had left with her.

Then the bus climbed a hill.

The engine groaned.

The passengers swayed.

Someone complained that the driver was killing them.

Then…

BOOOOM.

The bus jerked.

Everyone went silent.

The driver slowed.

The conductor jumped down.

A few seconds later came the announcement nobody wanted.

“Tyre.”

The passengers sighed.

Everyone climbed out.

The road stretched ahead in two narrow lanes, almost empty beneath the afternoon sky.

On both sides, wheat fields rolled across the countryside, golden and heavy, their heads bending gently in the wind.

The harvest was close.

The sun had begun its slow descent.

For the first time all day, there was silence.

No rattling metal.

No conductor shouting.

No crying child.

No engine coughing.

Just wind.

Wheat.

Sunlight.

And Lala.

She stood beside the bus, her white headphones resting around her neck.

The afternoon light fell across her face.

Behind her, the wheat moved in waves.

For one suspended moment, Tetu forgot the bus.

Forgot the broken tyre.

Forgot the long road.

He simply looked at her.

There are moments that arrive quietly.

They do not announce themselves.

They do not ask permission.

They simply appear, stay for a few seconds, and leave you with the uncomfortable feeling that something important has just happened.

This was one of those moments.

Lala turned.

Caught him staring.

“You’re quiet.”

Tetu smiled.

“I was thinking.”

“About?”

He looked at the bus.

Then at the endless road.

Then back at her.

“I think this bus should take longer.”

She laughed.

“But you’ve been complaining about it the whole day.”

“I’ve reconsidered.”

“Why?”

Tetu looked towards the road.

Then at Lala.

“Because maybe…”

He smiled.

“…the long way home isn’t always a bad thing.”

The conductor shouted that the tyre was fixed.

Passengers began climbing back into the bus.

Lala picked up her headphones.

Tetu followed.

Neither of them knew it yet.

They had boarded that bus trying to save a few coins.

But somewhere along that long, uncomfortable road, between a stubborn window, a dead phone and a punctured tyre, they had stumbled into something neither of them had budgeted for.

A beginning.

2d:T2c3c,

A beginning.

2e:T404d,

The tyre was fixed, and the bus groaned back onto the road.

Nobody applauded.

Nobody trusted it enough for that.

But everyone climbed aboard.

This time, Tetu found himself beside Lala.

He tried not to look too pleased about it.

Tried.

The bus lurched forward, throwing everyone slightly to the left.

Lala grabbed the seat in front.

Tetu grabbed the same seat.

Their hands almost touched.

They both pulled away.

She laughed.

“You’re still afraid of this bus.”

“I’m not afraid.”

The bus hit another bump.

Tetu’s shoulder slammed against the window.

Lala burst out laughing.

“Clearly.”

He straightened his shirt.

“I was just testing the suspension.”

“On your body?”

“Very advanced technique.”

She laughed again.

And just like that, they were back in conversation.

The road rolled beneath them.

Fields replaced buildings.

Buildings returned.

Then disappeared again.

The bus stopped at small trading centres where people seemed to materialise from the dust.

Every stop brought another wave of sellers.

They squeezed through the aisle carrying sweets, groundnuts, mandazi, boiled eggs and bottles of water.

“Chicken! Chicken! Fresh chicken!”

That caught Tetu’s attention.

A woman was carrying a tray of fried chicken pieces threaded onto little wooden sticks.

Mshikaki style.

He looked at the woman.

Then at Lala.

Then at his pocket.

His pocket gave him a very clear answer.

No.

His heart gave him another.

Buy it.

The heart won.

“Two.”

The woman handed him two sticks.

Tetu passed one to Lala.

She looked at it.

“You bought me chicken?”

“It’s part of the journey.”

“Are you sure?”

“Absolutely.”

She took a bite.

Her eyes widened.

“This is actually good.”

Tetu smiled.

“Of course.”

He had just spent money he was supposed to be saving.

But watching her enjoy it somehow made the transaction feel financially responsible.

At the next stop, a man climbed aboard selling sweets.

At another, someone sold roasted maize.

At another, a woman walked through the bus with packets of crisps hanging from both hands.

The journey had developed its own rhythm.

Stop.

Shout.

Buy.

Drive.

Bump.

Laugh.

Repeat.

Tetu barely noticed the hours passing.

He was too busy listening to Lala.

The conversation had moved beyond the safe little subjects strangers use to test one another.

They spoke about home.

About the people waiting for them.

About childhood.

About university.

About the things they wanted from life.

Sometimes they talked.

Sometimes they simply watched the world pass outside.

And Tetu discovered that he liked even the silences.

Especially the silences.

Because he could sit beside her without needing to perform.

Then the jewellery hawker arrived.

He appeared in the aisle carrying a small case that seemed to contain an entire shop.

Watches.

Bracelets.

Rings.

Chains.

Necklaces.

Tetu glanced at it.

Then looked away.

Then looked back.

And there it was.

A small necklace.

Simple silver-coloured chain.

Tiny pendant.

Two letters.

L&L.

Tetu stared at it.

His eyes moved slowly towards Lala.

She was looking out the window.

He looked back at the necklace.

There are moments when a man’s financial situation and his romantic ambition enter a heated argument.

This was one of them.

“How much?”

The hawker told him.

Tetu almost laughed.

Almost.

He checked his money.

Not enough.

Not even close.

But he wanted it.

Not because it was expensive.

Because it was L&L.

And he had already decided, somewhere between the chicken and the conversation, that this girl was becoming a story he wanted to remember.

He stood.

“Come.”

The hawker followed him outside.

Tetu leaned closer.

“I like it.”

“Then buy it.”

“I can’t pay that.”

“That is the price.”

Tetu shook his head.

“That’s not a price. That’s a personal attack.”

The hawker laughed.

They began negotiating.

Tetu had suddenly transformed.

The quiet university student was gone.

In his place stood a man who had apparently been appointed Minister of Bargaining.

The seller refused.

Tetu refused.

The seller lowered the price.

Tetu lowered his.

The seller walked away.

Tetu let him.

Three steps.

Four.

Five.

Tetu’s heart started beating faster.

Six.

The hawker turned.

They negotiated again.

This time, Tetu spoke with the precision of a man defending a national budget.

Eventually, the seller stretched out his hand.

Tetu shook it.

Deal.

The necklace disappeared into his pocket.

So did most of the money he had left.

He climbed back onto the bus.

Lala looked at him.

“You took forever.”

“Network.”

She raised an eyebrow.

“Network?”

“Very poor network.”

She smiled.

Tetu looked away before she could see how pleased he was with himself.

Outside, the afternoon was beginning to surrender to evening.

The sunlight softened.

The fields turned gold.

Long shadows stretched across the road.

Inside the bus, conversations became quieter.

People who had spent hours talking were now leaning against windows.

Children slept across their mothers’ laps.

A man at the back snored with the confidence of someone who had paid for the entire bus.

The driver turned on the headlights.

The road ahead became a ribbon of darkness cut by yellow beams.

Lala’s energy slowly disappeared.

Her replies became shorter.

Her eyes blinked longer.

Then her head tilted.

Tetu looked at her.

She was asleep.

Before he could move, her head settled gently against his sweater.

Tetu froze.

Completely.

The bus rattled beneath them.

Her hair brushed against his neck.

She was close enough that he could feel the warmth of her breath.

The tiny hairs along his neck lifted.

He swallowed.

He didn’t dare move.

Not even when his arm began to go numb.

Not even when the bus hit another bump.

He simply sat there.

A man who had spent the entire day trying to impress a girl was now terrified that breathing too loudly might wake her.

He looked through the window.

Darkness had swallowed most of the landscape.

Occasional lights appeared in the distance.

A farmhouse.

A roadside shop.

A passing motorcycle.

Then darkness again.

Tetu smiled.

He had forgotten all about the journey home.

He only wanted the road to keep going.

Just a little longer.

But roads have no sympathy for young men in love.

The city began appearing ahead.

More lights.

More traffic.

More horns.

They were close.

Too close.

Tetu looked down at Lala.

His heart sank.

He had minutes.

Maybe less.

The bus slowed.

Passengers began gathering their bags.

Then a pothole the size of a small political constituency launched the entire bus into the air.

Lala woke with a startled movement.

She blinked.

Headlights from an approaching vehicle flooded through the window.

She shielded her eyes.

“Are we home yet?”

Tetu smiled.

“Home?”

She nodded sleepily.

“Not yet.”

He paused.

“But one day.”

She laughed softly.

“You’re impossible.”

He reached into his pocket.

The necklace.

His fingers searched.

Nothing.

He pushed deeper.

Still nothing.

The chain had somehow disappeared into the bottom of the pocket.

Lala watched him struggle.

“What are you looking for?”

“Nothing.”

“You’ve been fighting your pocket for thirty seconds.”

“It started the fight.”

She laughed.

Finally, his fingers caught the chain.

He pulled it out.

“Here.”

She looked at the pendant.

“L&L?”

Tetu scratched his head.

“Yes.”

“What does it mean?”

He looked at her.

Then at the necklace.

Then back at her.

“Lala and Later.”

She laughed.

“Who is Later?”

“That would be me.”

He pointed at the pendant.

“Although I think I should replace that second L with a T.”

She smiled.

“L&T?”

“Exactly.”

She took the necklace.

For a moment, she simply looked at it.

Then she put it around her neck.

Tetu watched the little pendant settle against her skin.

“I’ll get you a proper one,” he said.

She touched it gently.

“This one is proper.”

She looked at him.

“It’s the thought that counts.”

Neither of them said anything after that.

They didn’t need to.

The bus was almost empty now.

The conductor walked through the aisle collecting forgotten bottles and checking underneath seats.

Then he shouted toward them.

“You two! We have arrived!”

Tetu frowned.

The conductor pointed toward the door.

“Out! We need to lock the bus and go sleep!”

They climbed down.

Tetu turned once.

The old bus stood beneath the evening lights, its faded blue paint almost grey now.

The crooked headlamp still stared into the night.

The tyre that had delayed them looked perfectly innocent.

Tetu placed his hand on the metal handle.

Tapped it twice.

“Thank you.”

Then he followed Lala.

They walked through the bus park.

The place had changed.

The afternoon chaos had become evening chaos.

Drivers called out destinations.

Passengers negotiated fares.

Bags rolled across the dusty ground.

Motorcycles weaved between people.

Someone shouted.

Someone laughed.

Someone was already arguing over twenty shillings.

Tetu walked beside Lala, quietly enjoying every remaining second.

Then she stopped.

“That’s my ride.”

Tetu followed her eyes.

A black Range Rover stood near the edge of the bus park.

It was spotless.

Glossy.

Completely ridiculous among the ageing buses and battered matatus surrounding it.

Tetu stared.

Then looked at Lala.

“Wait.”

She smiled.

“Yes.”

“That is your ride?”

She nodded.

Before Tetu could process the information, the driver’s door opened.

A man stepped out.

Kato.

He looked to be in his sixties.

His black coat had clearly lived through several seasons, but somehow still carried itself with dignity.

His hair was neatly kept.

His face was calm.

And when he smiled, there was something reassuring about him.

“Good evening,” he said.

His voice was smooth and measured.

He opened the rear door.

Lala turned to Tetu.

“What about you?”

That question landed differently.

Tetu looked at the Range Rover.

Then at the road beyond it.

Then at her.

For one brief second, he pictured his home.

The narrow path.

The old mabati houses.

The rubbish gathered along the edges.

Dogs digging through it.

The thin stream of dirty water flowing between the houses.

Small stones arranged across it as makeshift bridges.

The house with iron sheets so old that even daylight could enter without knocking.

He wasn’t ashamed of home.

Not exactly.

He simply wasn’t ready for her to see it.

Not tonight.

So he smiled.

“I have to pass somewhere first.”

“Where?”

“I need to get some music.”

She looked confused.

“Music?”

“My playlist.”

She laughed.

“Now?”

“It’s urgent.”

Kato watched him quietly.

Tetu could almost hear the old man’s thoughts.

Still, after a few minutes of polite negotiation, they agreed on where they would part.

Lala climbed into the Range Rover.

Before the door closed, she looked at him.

“Goodnight, Tetu.”

He smiled.

“Goodnight, Lala.”

The door shut.

The Range Rover pulled away.

Tetu watched the red tail lights disappear into the traffic.

Then he reached into his pocket.

He counted his money.

Once.

Twice.

He was short twenty shillings.

He looked at the matatus.

He could already imagine the makangas.

“Boss, pesa iko wapi?”

No.

He wasn’t going through that.

So he walked.

At first, the city swallowed him.

Then slowly, the lights thinned.

The roads narrowed.

The buildings became smaller.

The polished parts of the city gave way to the places that survived without polish.

Tetu kept walking.

His feet hurt.

His shoulders were tired.

His stomach reminded him that the chicken had not exactly been dinner.

But he was smiling.

Because his mind wasn’t on the road.

It was still on her.

Her laugh.

Her voice.

The necklace.

The way she had slept against him.

The way she had said, It’s the thought that counts.

He walked through the narrow paths of his neighbourhood.

A dog nosed through a pile of rubbish.

Another barked from behind a rusted gate.

Children played beside the houses.

Music leaked through corrugated walls.

Someone was cooking.

Smoke drifted low beneath the evening air.

A narrow stream of grey water trickled between the houses, squeezing its way around stones and bits of plastic.

Where the water widened, residents had placed flat rocks across it.

Tetu stepped over them without thinking.

He had done it a thousand times.

Ahead stood the little mabati house.

His home.

The iron sheets were old enough to have stories of their own.

Tiny holes had opened in several places, allowing thin shafts of light from outside to pierce the darkness inside.

There was no alarm.

There didn’t need to be.

If someone tried to enter quietly, the door would announce them to the entire neighbourhood.

His mother sat near the wall peeling potatoes.

A small television played the evening news.

The picture flickered.

Static crawled across the screen.

The news returned.

Then static again.

Behind her, a faded piece of cloth separated the sitting room from the small sleeping area.

Everything was exactly where he had left it.

Nothing had changed.

Except him.

He stood at the doorway.

His mother looked up.

“Tetu?”

He nodded.

“You’re late.”

He smiled.

“Yes.”

“You ate?”

There was a pause.

“Yes.”

His mother looked at him.

Then at his empty hands.

Then back at his face.

She didn’t ask again.

Tetu walked inside.

Sat down.

The television continued murmuring in the background.

His mother returned to peeling potatoes.

Tetu leaned against the wall.

He closed his eyes.

And there she was.

Lala.

Standing beneath the evening lights.

Laughing.

Wearing a little necklace that had cost him almost everything he had left.

L&L.

Lala and Later.

He smiled.

He had walked home with twenty shillings less than he needed.

But somehow, for the first time in a long time, he felt like he had arrived somewhere.

2f:T3c84,

Supper was ready.

By the time Tetu settled onto the floor, the entire family had gathered behind the faded curtain that divided the house into its two great territories: the sitting room and the bedroom.

Calling them territories was generous.

The entire house could be crossed in about six steps.

Eight if you were avoiding the bucket.

The curtain had once been white.

It had now developed a colour that could only be described as life experience.

On one side, the family slept.

On the other, they sat, ate, watched television and did everything else a family needed to do.

The bulb hung from a wire on the sitting-room side, its weak light struggling to reach the bedroom.

Behind the curtain, the darkness was softened only by the flicker of a small kerosene lamp.

Tetu’s younger brother sat beside it, bent over his exercise book, finishing his homework.

The lamp hissed quietly.

Every few seconds, he moved the book closer to the flame.

Not too close.

His mother had warned him enough times.

On the far side of the room stood ten yellow jerrycans.

All neatly stacked.

Five at the bottom.

Five above.

Tetu looked at them and smiled.

“Look at my plumbing system.”

His brother glanced up.

“You’re still calling that plumbing?”

“Of course.”

Their mother laughed.

It had started as a joke.

Then Tetu had actually built it.

He had poked small holes into the jerrycans and connected them with bits of plastic piping.

The arrangement wasn’t pretty.

It looked more like a science experiment that had escaped from a laboratory.

But it worked.

Together, the ten jerrycans held nearly two hundred litres of water.

“You only need to fill one,” Tetu explained proudly.

His father looked at the strange network.

“And how does that work?”

“Pressure.”

His father nodded slowly.

The sort of nod fathers give when they don’t completely understand something but don’t want their sons to know that.

Tetu continued.

“Fill the first one, the water moves through the pipes, and they all fill.”

His mother loved it.

For once, nobody had to keep carrying jerrycans around the house every time they needed water.

Even better, there was one small bottle connected to the system.

Open it, and the pressure pushed the water out.

It wasn’t elegant.

It wasn’t modern.

It definitely wasn’t something you would find in an architecture magazine.

But it worked.

And in that house, anything that worked was worth celebrating.

They ate.

The meal was simple.

Potatoes.

A little stew.

Enough for everyone.

Conversation moved around the room as naturally as the steam rising from the plates.

Tetu barely spoke.

His phone sat beside him.

He checked it.

Nothing.

He checked again.

Nothing.

His mother noticed.

She said nothing.

Yet mothers possess a strange surveillance system that requires neither cameras nor Wi-Fi.

She knew.

When supper ended, Tetu helped clear the plates.

Then he lifted the small wooden table from the centre of the room.

The table had spent years carrying meals, homework books, cups of tea and the occasional argument.

Now it was pushed against the wall.

His mattress came next.

He dragged it into the middle of the room.

One side had completely flattened with age.

It wasn’t really a mattress anymore.

It was a mattress with one side that had retired.

Tetu didn’t care.

He dropped onto it.

Phone in hand.

He waited.

The house slowly became quiet.

His younger brother finished his homework.

His father settled down.

His mother moved around the little kitchen area, putting things away.

Tetu stared at his phone.

Nothing.

He smiled at the memory of Lala.

Then checked again.

Nothing.

He put the phone on his chest.

Closed his eyes.

Opened them.

Checked again.

Nothing.

Eventually sleep began pulling him under.

And then…

BZZZT.

His phone vibrated.

Tetu shot upright.

He completely forgot where he was.

He leapt from the mattress like he had just received news of a national emergency.

His leg struck a cooking pot beside him.

CLANG!

The entire house shook.

His mother turned.

“Tetu!”

He froze.

His younger brother looked over.

His father lifted his head.

Tetu grabbed the phone.

The message was from Lala.

He opened it.

Thanks for an amazing day. Can you please come to my place tomorrow for a proper thank you?

He read it once.

Twice.

Then a third time.

His smile grew.

He had forgotten the pain of the journey.

Forgotten the bus.

Forgotten the walk.

Forgotten the twenty shillings.

He had even forgotten the pot currently sitting beside his leg.

There was only one problem.

Morning was many hours away.

And suddenly, time became his enemy.

He lay back down.

Checked the message.

Closed the phone.

Opened it again.

Read it.

Smiled.

Turned over.

Read it again.

His mother finally lost patience.

“Sleep!”

“I am sleeping.”

“You have been staring at that phone for twenty minutes.”

“I’m thinking.”

“Think tomorrow.”

He smiled into the darkness.

Tomorrow.

That word had never sounded so beautiful.

The night dragged.

Every minute seemed personally committed to frustrating him.

At some point, Tetu looked through the tiny holes in the iron sheets.

The stars were visible.

He imagined Lala looking at the same sky.

Then smiled at the ridiculousness of the thought.

Eventually, sleep came.

But dawn arrived before he was ready for it.

Or perhaps he had never really slept.

The first light entered through the holes in the mabati walls, drawing thin golden lines across the floor.

Tetu’s eyes opened.

He was already awake.

His father wasn’t.

That alone was historic.

His father, who could wake before the rooster and somehow make the rooster feel late, was still sleeping.

Tetu quietly grabbed a bucket.

Outside, the morning air was cool.

The bathroom stood at the far end of the compound.

Calling it a bathroom was another generous decision.

It was a small makeshift structure patched together with old iron sheets and plastic.

The family latrine was inside.

So was the shower.

A worn plastic sheet hung across one side for privacy.

An old metal tin had been placed over the toilet hole when someone needed to shower.

It wasn’t luxury.

It wasn’t even particularly comfortable.

But it was theirs.

Tetu hung his towel over his shoulder.

In one hand was a brown bar of soap.

It had been used so many times that it had become thin, sharp-edged and almost impossible to hold without dropping.

He washed quickly.

Today was not a day for lingering.

He had somewhere to be.

By the time he returned, the sun had climbed above the rooftops.

The neighbourhood was waking.

Roosters were already arguing with one another.

Children shouted.

Doors opened.

Someone nearby was sweeping dust from one patch of earth to another, which Tetu had always suspected was mostly an exercise in moving the dust around.

His mother was boiling water for tea.

She looked at him.

“Tetu.”

“Yes?”

“Go to Tatu’s and get some sugar.”

He grabbed the money.

Same path.

Same stones.

Same little stream.

Only today, he jumped across everything.

He returned moments later.

His mother looked at his face.

Then smiled.

“Hmm.”

Tetu stopped.

“What?”

“That face.”

“What face?”

“The exact face your father had about two decades ago.”

His father, now awake, appeared at the doorway.

Tetu pretended not to hear.

He poured himself tea.

Then looked at his mother.

“Ma, I need twenty shillings.”

His father stepped outside.

“You should work.”

His mother laughed.

“Give the young man a break. Surely you can see he has somewhere important to go.”

His father looked at Tetu.

Then at the unusually early hour.

“He woke before me.”

That was enough evidence.

His father walked back into the room.

His trousers lay folded on the bed.

He reached into the pocket.

Pulled out his wallet.

Opened it.

Inside was one thousand shillings.

He removed a note and held it out.

“Here.”

Tetu stared.

“Dad…”

“Take it.”

For a moment, Tetu didn’t move.

Then he jumped forward and hugged him.

His father stiffened.

Tetu squeezed harder.

The man eventually patted his back.

Once.

Twice.

“Enough.”

Tetu laughed.

His father pushed him away.

“Go before you become late.”

That was his father’s version of affection.

They had grown up with tough love.

Love wasn’t always spoken.

Sometimes it arrived as a thousand-shilling note pressed quietly into your hand.

Sometimes it was an extra spoonful of stew.

Sometimes it was a father pretending not to worry.

They were poor.

There was no disguising that.

The house was small.

Money was always carefully counted.

Water had its own engineering system.

The mattress had given up on one side.

But there was something inside those four walls that poverty had never managed to take.

Love.

And pride.

Tetu’s father was proud of his sons.

Both boys were bright.

Both worked hard.

Both had passed.

And Tetu, especially, had always stood out.

That scholarship to university hadn’t come by accident.

It had been earned.

His father had once told him,

“Study hard. One day you will take us out of here.”

Tetu believed him.

Maybe because his father believed it first.

By the time breakfast was finished, Tetu was ready.

He had found an old bottle of perfume buried somewhere in the house.

There wasn’t much left.

He tilted it.

Shook it.

Tilted it again.

One small drop.

Enough.

He rubbed it between his palms and carefully patted it onto his shirt.

The bottle itself had started developing rust.

But Tetu didn’t care.

Today, he was going somewhere.

Somewhere important.

He checked himself one last time in the cracked mirror.

Straightened his shirt.

Adjusted his collar.

Then stepped outside.

Back at the bus stop, he asked for directions to Palm Estate.

He tried to sound casual.

As though he had been there before.

As though he regularly visited neighbourhoods where houses had gates bigger than his entire home.

The journey took him deeper into a different world.

The change happened gradually.

The roads became smoother.

The dust disappeared.

The walls became taller.

Then taller still.

Massive homes appeared behind enormous gates.

Lawns were trimmed so perfectly they looked artificial.

Trees stood where rubbish heaps usually stood.

Cars sat in driveways.

Not one.

Sometimes three.

Tetu stared through the window.

“My God,” he whispered.

One house had a fountain.

A fountain.

People were paying money for water to come out of a hole while his family had ten yellow jerrycans connected by pipes.

He shook his head.

The bus continued.

Then finally came the sign.

99 Street, Palm Estate.

A small golden plaque hung at the junction.

Tetu stepped down.

He looked around.

Quiet.

Clean.

Expensive.

He started walking.

Lala had mentioned the location casually the previous day.

She had also mentioned something else.

The pomegranate tree.

You’ll see it at the gate.

So Tetu walked.

And walked.

And kept walking.

He counted houses.

Eighty-two.

Eighty-four.

Eighty-six.

He began to realise something.

This was not a neighbourhood designed for walking.

It was designed for cars.

His little trip from the junction had become several minutes.

“Wow,” he muttered.

“It’s quite far.”

Finally, he saw it.

88 Block.

And beside the gate stood the tree.

Pomegranate.

Large.

Beautiful.

Its branches stretched over the wall, heavy with green leaves.

Tetu stopped.

He knew immediately.

Two enormous gates stood ahead.

The grass outside was perfectly trimmed.

The driveway was paved on both sides.

There wasn’t a single plastic bottle.

Not one.

Tetu looked down at his shoes.

Then back at the gate.

A small golden bell sat beside it.

He pressed it.

Nothing happened.

He pressed it again.

Then again.

At this point, Tetu had stopped ringing the bell and had started composing a song.

“Maybe this thing needs”

A voice suddenly came through the intercom.

“Tetu?”

He froze.

His eyes widened.

He looked up.

Down.

Left.

Right.

Nobody.

He looked at the intercom.

“How does it know my name?”

Before he could answer himself, the massive gate began sliding slowly to one side.

And Tetu forgot how to breathe.

Behind it stood a house.

No.

A mansion.

It was enormous.

White walls.

Tall windows.

Perfect gardens.

Two massive pillars framing the main entrance.

The place looked less like a home and more like a hotel where Tetu would be afraid to touch anything.

And there, standing beneath the pillars…

Was Lala.

She was smiling.

Tetu’s face opened into the widest grin of his life.

His cheeks actually hurt.

She waved.

He walked forward.

Slowly.

Trying desperately to remember that his shoes were not supposed to be trembling.

When he reached her, he looked past her at the mansion.

Then back at her.

“Well, hello there, beautiful.”

Lala blushed.

Tetu pointed behind her.

“Is this a hotel?”

She laughed.

“Come inside.”

He lowered his voice.

“Or are you trying to kidnap me?”

She shook her head, still smiling.

“No.”

She stepped aside.

“Let’s go in.”

Tetu looked once more at the enormous house.

Then at Lala.

He took a breath.

And walked through the gate.

30:T2751,

Tetu stepped through the gate.

And for a few seconds, he forgot to walk.

He simply stood there.

Looking.

The garden was the first thing that got him.

The grass was so perfectly trimmed that Tetu briefly wondered whether someone came outside every morning with scissors.

The driveway was wide enough for several cars.

Several.

His entire neighbourhood could probably have held a small meeting on that driveway.

There were flowers everywhere.

Not the kind growing wherever nature had decided to place them.

These had clearly been instructed where to stand.

The house itself rose above him, clean and enormous, with tall windows reflecting the afternoon light.

Tetu looked at the walls.

Then the windows.

Then the floor.

Then his shoes.

He suddenly became very conscious of his shoes.

“Are you okay?” Lala asked.

“Yes.”

He wasn’t.

He was experiencing an architectural emergency.

“This is your house?”

She laughed.

“Yes.”

Tetu nodded slowly.

“Nice.”

That was the only word his brain could produce.

Nice.

Inside, things became worse.

Or better.

Depending on which side of the economic universe you were standing on.

The sitting room was enormous.

There were sofas that looked like nobody had ever been allowed to sit on them with food.

A chandelier hung from the ceiling.

Actual chandelier.

Tetu looked up.

Then looked at Lala.

“We have one bulb.”

She laughed.

“What?”

“At home.”

He pointed upwards.

“One bulb.”

Lala smiled.

“Welcome.”

He walked slowly.

Everywhere he looked, there was something.

A painting.

A sculpture.

A giant television.

A staircase that curved upwards like it had somewhere important to be.

Even the air smelled expensive.

Tetu suddenly remembered his ten yellow jerrycans.

His homemade plumbing system.

The mattress.

The curtain.

The kerosene lamp.

And for the first time that day, he understood something he had never really considered.

Two worlds could exist in the same city.

Not across oceans.

Not across continents.

Sometimes they were separated by a few kilometres.

And that morning, he had woken up in one.

Now he was standing inside another.

What amazed him most wasn’t the mansion.

It was Lala.

This girl had sat beside him on that battered bus.

The cheapest bus he could afford.

She had laughed at his jokes.

Ate chicken from a roadside trader.

Complained about the heat.

Lost her phone battery.

And fallen asleep against his sweater.

She could have been anywhere.

Yet somehow, she had been there.

With him.

Tetu looked at her.

“You really came in that bus?”

Lala laughed.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Why not?”

He shook his head.

He couldn’t explain it.

Maybe that was the beauty of the day.

Two strangers had boarded a tired old bus for completely different reasons.

Neither knowing that by evening, one would be standing inside the other’s world.

“Tetu!”

He turned.

Lala’s mother stood nearby.

She smiled warmly.

“Tetu, come. We were waiting for you.”

Waiting.

The word alone made him nervous.

He followed Lala.

Her parents were introduced almost casually.

“This is my dad.”

Her father extended his hand.

“Tetu.”

“Yes, sir.”

“Welcome.”

Her mother smiled.

“Please relax.”

Tetu nodded.

He sat.

Carefully.

Very carefully.

He wasn’t going to be the young man who broke a rich family’s furniture on his first visit.

Dinner followed.

And Tetu discovered another problem.

Rich people ate calmly.

Nobody fought for the biggest piece of meat.

Nobody checked whether everyone had eaten before taking another serving.

Nobody counted potatoes.

There was food.

Lots of it.

Different dishes.

Fresh juice.

Dessert.

Tetu looked at the table.

Then at Lala.

She caught him staring.

“Eat.”

“I am eating.”

“You’ve been looking at the food for five minutes.”

“I was appreciating it.”

She laughed.

Her father smiled.

Soon the table filled with conversation.

University came up.

Tetu spoke about his studies.

His father asked questions.

Real questions.

Not the kind adults ask simply because silence makes them uncomfortable.

He wanted to know what Tetu was studying.

Why.

What he hoped to do with it.

What he thought about the industry.

Tetu answered honestly.

At first, cautiously.

Then with confidence.

Something changed.

Lala’s father leaned back.

Listened.

Asked another question.

Tetu answered.

Another.

Tetu answered again.

The conversation moved naturally from university to business.

Then technology.

Then Africa.

Then opportunities.

Tetu forgot that he was sitting inside a mansion.

He forgot the chandelier.

Forgot the expensive furniture.

Forgot his shoes.

He was simply talking.

And Lala’s father was listening.

At the end of dinner, the older man looked at him.

“You should come to my office.”

Tetu blinked.

“Your office?”

“Yes.”

“When?”

“Tomorrow, if you’re available.”

Tetu stared.

Tomorrow?

Again?

He looked at Lala.

She was smiling.

His brain struggled to keep up.

Yesterday he had been counting coins.

Today he was sitting at a dinner table discussing business with a man who had just invited him to his office.

Life had apparently stopped using calendars.

It was moving by plot twists.

Tetu smiled.

“I’d be honoured.”

Her father nodded.

“Good.”

And just like that, another door had opened.

Tetu wasn’t sure where it led.

But he was beginning to realise that this journey was becoming much bigger than a bus ride home.

Eventually, evening returned.

And with it came the part Tetu had been trying not to think about.

He had to leave.

Lala walked him outside.

The same gates waited ahead.

The same perfectly trimmed grass.

The same Range Rover.

But Tetu felt different now.

Not richer.

Not poorer.

Just more aware.

He looked back at the house.

Then at Lala.

“Thank you.”

“For what?”

“Everything.”

She smiled.

“You’re welcome.”

For a moment, they stood quietly.

Then Tetu laughed.

“What?”

“I still can’t believe you were in that bus.”

She shook her head.

“And I still can’t believe you tried to open that window.”

“That window was defective.”

“Of course.”

He smiled.

She smiled.

Then he turned and started walking.

The gates closed behind him.

And once again, the world changed.

The smooth estate roads slowly disappeared behind him.

The perfectly trimmed lawns became walls.

The walls became smaller houses.

The houses became shops.

The shops became crowded streets.

The clean pavements gave way to dust.

The streetlights became fewer.

The noise became louder.

Then came the familiar paths.

The narrow stream.

The stones across it.

The old houses.

The dogs searching beneath piles of rubbish.

The corrugated iron walls.

The smell of cooking drifting through the evening.

And finally, his little mabati house.

The same one.

The same curtain.

The same bulb.

The same yellow jerrycans standing proudly in their corner like ten retired soldiers.

Tetu smiled.

Only yesterday, he had thought this was the whole world.

Now he knew better.

Not because his home had changed.

It hadn’t.

Because he had.

He walked inside.

His mother looked up.

She studied his face.

Again.

Mothers never miss anything.

“You went somewhere.”

Tetu smiled.

“Yes.”

“Where?”

He looked toward the curtain.

Then toward his mattress.

Then at the little house around him.

“A very far place.”

His mother raised an eyebrow.

He laughed.

“Long story.”

She returned to what she was doing.

Tetu sat down.

His phone vibrated.

He looked at it.

Lala.

Just her name was enough to make him smile.

He looked around the room.

Then at the message.

Then at the old ceiling.

Outside, the night settled gently over the neighbourhood.

Somewhere beyond those narrow streets, behind walls and gates, another world was sleeping.

And somewhere between the two worlds was a boy who had begun the week thinking only about getting home.

Now he was wondering where home might take him next.

Funny thing about life.

Sometimes the longest journeys don’t take you far at all.

Sometimes they simply show you how big the world really is.

And sometimes…

they introduce you to someone who makes you want to see it.

For now, though, Tetu had one thing left to do.

Sleep.

Or at least pretend to.

Because tomorrow, he had an office to visit.

And somehow, the boy who had been twenty shillings short was beginning to wonder what else life had hidden inside his pockets.

Until then, dearest reader…

we leave him there.

31:T7877,

We leave him there.

Except Tetu did not sleep.

Not really.

For a man who could sleep through almost anything, the night was strangely uncooperative.

Tetu could sleep through rain.

He could sleep through arguments.

He could sleep through the neighbour’s radio playing the same song seventeen times.

He had once slept through a thunderstorm so violent that his mother had spent half the night moving basins around the room to catch water leaking through the roof.

When she told him about it the next morning, he had looked at her and asked,

“Did it rain?”

So yes.

Tetu was a serious sleeper.

But that night, sleep came in pieces.

Small, useless pieces.

He would close his eyes.

Then open them.

Turn to one side.

Then the other.

Pull the blanket over himself.

Kick it away.

Check his phone.

Put it down.

Check it again.

Nothing had changed.

12:17.

12:39.

1:03.

1:26.

He sighed.

The little room seemed unusually quiet.

Moonlight entered through the curtain in long pale strips, touching the floor, the wall, the edge of his mattress.

The yellow jerrycans stood in their corner.

Ten of them.

His mother had once called them ugly.

Tetu had defended them.

“They are useful.”

“They are ugly.”

“They can be both.”

Tonight, they looked almost dignified.

The moon had found their plastic sides and turned them silver.

Tetu stared at them.

Then smiled.

He thought about the mansion.

The chandelier.

The giant staircase.

The red wine glasses.

The enormous dining table.

The conversation with Lala’s father.

Kafu.

That was his name.

Tetu had heard it several times now, and yet the man still felt slightly unreal.

Kafu had asked questions.

Real questions.

The kind that forced Tetu to think before answering.

And then there had been the invitation.

Come to my office tomorrow.

Tetu had spent most of the evening wondering whether he had misunderstood.

Maybe Kafu had simply been polite.

Maybe “come to my office” meant what adults sometimes said when they didn’t actually mean it.

But Lala had smiled.

Her mother had smiled.

Kafu had sounded serious.

So tomorrow was real.

The office was real.

The invitation was real.

And somehow, Tetu had to wake up and walk into it.

He closed his eyes.

Immediately, Lala appeared in his mind.

Her laugh.

Her eyes.

The way she had looked at him when he said the long way home wasn’t necessarily a bad thing.

He opened his eyes.

“No.”

He sat up.

“This is not happening.”

He looked around the room.

Curtain.

Mabati walls.

Mattress.

Jerricans.

Old clothes hanging from a nail.

He pinched his arm.

“Ouch.”

He looked at his arm.

Then laughed quietly.

“Definitely awake.”

He lay down again.

Outside, a dog barked.

Another answered.

Somewhere down the road, a motorbike passed.

Its engine grew louder.

Then faded.

The neighbourhood at night had a different face.

During the day, it was crowded and restless.

Children shouted.

Women called to one another.

Men argued over football.

Matatus honked.

Someone was always frying something.

Someone was always selling something.

Someone was always going somewhere.

At night, everything softened.

The narrow paths became ribbons of shadow.

The corrugated iron roofs caught the moonlight.

The walls looked taller.

The little stream near the houses reflected fragments of silver.

Even the rubbish piles seemed quieter.

Tetu heard his father’s door open.

He lifted his head.

His father stepped outside.

He was going to the washroom.

The washroom sat behind the house, a short walk away.

At night, that short distance could feel much longer.

His father walked slowly.

Tetu watched through the curtain.

The old man passed beneath the moon.

For a moment, the light caught his face.

He looked tired.

Older than he had looked that morning.

Tetu watched him disappear around the corner.

He looked up.

The moon was bright.

Very bright.

He had noticed it earlier when he came home.

But now it seemed impossible to ignore.

It hung above the neighbourhood without choosing sides.

The same moon that touched their mabati roof was touching the expensive roofs behind high walls.

The same light was falling on the mansion where Lala lived.

Tetu smiled.

Maybe the moon knew something he didn’t.

His father returned.

The door creaked.

“You are awake?”

Tetu turned.

“Apparently.”

His father looked at him.

“Why?”

“I don’t know.”

The older man studied him.

Then smiled faintly.

“You are thinking too much.”

“Maybe.”

“About the girl?”

Tetu froze.

“What girl?”

His father laughed.

“Go to sleep.”

Tetu smiled.

“I am trying.”

His father disappeared back into his room.

Tetu stared at the ceiling.

The girl.

He smiled despite himself.

Then finally, sometime after two in the morning, sleep caught him.

Not gently.

It simply pulled him under.

He dreamed of a door.

A large wooden door.

He stood in front of it.

He reached for the handle.

Then woke.

He sat upright.

His heart was beating hard.

For a few seconds, he didn’t know where he was.

He looked around.

The moon.

The curtain.

The jerrycans.

The mattress.

He touched the wall.

Real.

He laughed.

“Again?”

He fell back onto the mattress.

This time, when sleep came, it stayed.

Until morning.

Tetu woke before the alarm.

That alone told him something was wrong.

He sat up.

His hair was pointing in several directions.

His eyes felt heavy.

His mouth was dry.

He looked at his phone.

He had slept for less than four hours.

“Perfect.”

He dragged himself out of bed.

His mother was already awake.

She was preparing tea.

She looked at him.

Then looked again.

“You look sick.”

“I am fine.”

“You didn’t sleep.”

“How do you know?”

“You have a face.”

Tetu laughed.

“That is not evidence.”

“It is enough evidence for a mother.”

She handed him tea.

He took it.

“What time are you leaving?”

“Soon.”

“Where?”

“The office.”

She nodded.

Then pointed at him.

“Remember what I told you.”

“Don’t forget who I am.”

“Yes.”

“And?”

“Listen more than I speak.”

“And?”

“Don’t pretend to know what I don’t know.”

His mother smiled.

“Good.”

Tetu finished his tea.

Then stood before the small mirror.

He adjusted his shirt.

His mother watched.

“You are going to an interview, not a wedding.”

Tetu looked at her.

“Who said I am nervous?”

“You have adjusted that collar eleven times.”

He looked down.

It was true.

He stopped touching it.

“Okay.”

His mother smiled.

“Go.”

Tetu stepped outside.

Morning had arrived.

The city was already moving.

He walked to the road.

He felt tired.

Excited.

Terrified.

Hopeful.

All at once.

And somewhere beneath all of it was a strange thought.

Maybe this was nothing.

Maybe he would walk into Kafu’s office, answer a few questions, shake his hand, and return home.

Maybe life would continue exactly as it had.

But another part of him knew better.

Something had already shifted.

He simply couldn’t see the full shape of it yet.

Kafu’s office building rose out of the city like a deliberate statement.

Glass.

Steel.

Stone.

Clean lines.

People moved through the entrance with the confidence of people who knew exactly where they belonged.

Tetu stood outside for a moment.

He looked at himself.

Then at the building.

Then at himself again.

“Let’s go.”

He entered.

The lobby was cool.

The floor was polished marble.

The air smelled faintly of coffee and something more expensive that Tetu couldn’t identify.

At reception, a woman greeted him.

“Good morning.”

“Who are you here to see?”

“Kafu.”

She checked her computer.

“Yes. Mr. Kafu is expecting you.”

Tetu nodded.

“Thank you.”

He walked through the security gate.

Then down the corridor.

And there he was.

Kafu.

Standing outside the office.

He looked exactly as Tetu remembered.

Well dressed.

Calm.

Composed.

A dark suit.

White shirt.

Polished shoes.

Glasses resting in one hand.

He looked at Tetu and smiled.

“You came.”

Tetu smiled.

“You invited me.”

“Good.”

Kafu stepped aside.

“Come.”

Tetu walked towards him.

And then he saw the statue.

It stood beside the office door.

A strange Roman-style sculpture of a man.

The figure was muscular.

Bare-chested.

His head was tilted slightly upward.

One arm was broken.

Part of the shoulder had cracked.

The face was chipped.

The other arm seemed to have suffered some ancient tragedy of its own.

Tetu stared.

Kafu followed his gaze.

“You’ve noticed him.”

“Yes.”

“What do you think?”

Tetu considered the question.

“He looks like he has had a difficult life.”

Kafu laughed.

“That’s one interpretation.”

“Is he real?”

“The statue?”

“Yes.”

“No.”

Tetu nodded.

“Good.”

Kafu raised an eyebrow.

“Why?”

“I was wondering who broke him.”

Kafu laughed again.

“He came like that.”

Tetu looked at the statue once more.

“Then whoever made him had a bad day.”

“Possibly.”

They entered.

The first thing Tetu noticed was the carpet.

Red.

Deep red.

Soft.

Immaculate.

It stretched through the room like a strip of theatre.

Tetu slowed down.

Kafu noticed.

“Don’t worry.”

“About what?”

“The carpet.”

“I wasn’t worried.”

“You are walking like you’re afraid of damaging it.”

Tetu looked down.

“I don’t want to be responsible for anything here.”

Kafu smiled.

“That’s a good instinct.”

The office was large.

But not excessively decorated.

It had the kind of restraint that only came when someone could afford anything and had learned that having everything was unnecessary.

Large windows overlooked the city.

A wooden desk stood near one wall.

Books filled shelves.

A leather chair rested behind the desk.

And along the walls were photographs.

Tetu moved closer.

The photographs told a story.

Not the polished story companies usually tell.

This one was different.

There was an old photograph of a tiny office.

Three desks.

Two chairs.

A single computer.

People squeezed into a space that looked too small for ambition.

Tetu stared.

Kafu came beside him.

“Do you believe we started here?”

Tetu smiled.

“Honestly?”

“Honestly.”

“No.”

Kafu laughed.

“Good.”

Another photograph.

A larger office.

Another.

The first major contract.

Another.

A group of employees standing outside a new building.

Another.

The company expanding beyond the country.

Another.

A newspaper clipping.

Growth.

Expansion.

Setbacks.

Recovery.

Success.

Tetu studied them.

“You kept everything.”

“Almost everything.”

“Why?”

Kafu looked at the photographs.

“So people remember.”

“Remember what?”

“That this…”

He gestured around the room.

“…didn’t always exist.”

Tetu nodded.

Kafu pointed at the tiny office.

“Everybody likes the final building.”

He paused.

“Very few people want to remember the first room.”

Tetu looked at the photograph again.

The room was almost laughably small.

Yet there they were.

Young.

Tired.

Determined.

Kafu smiled.

“Every big thing begins looking small.”

Tetu absorbed that.

Then a faint voice came from inside the adjoining room.

“You are quite a smart man. I truly enjoyed our conversation.”

Tetu turned.

He recognized the voice.

Kafu smiled.

“Come.”

They entered.

Tetu sat.

Kafu remained standing for a moment.

Then walked towards a cabinet.

He opened it.

Inside were drinks.

Bottles arranged neatly.

Water.

Juice.

Other things Tetu didn’t recognize.

“What would you like?”

“Water.”

Kafu looked at him.

“Water?”

“Yes.”

“Good.”

He took out a bottle.

As he poured, Tetu swallowed.

The sound seemed ridiculously loud in the quiet room.

Kafu looked at him.

“Nervous?”

“No.”

Kafu smiled.

“You just swallowed loudly.”

Tetu laughed.

“I was clearing my throat.”

“Your throat seems to have been cleared.”

Tetu smiled.

Kafu poured himself a drink.

Then reached for a cigar.

He took it from the box.

He was about to place it on the table when his glasses slipped from where he had left them.

He caught them just before they fell.

Tetu laughed.

“You nearly lost them.”

Kafu looked at the glasses.

“These are expensive.”

“So is the carpet.”

Kafu laughed.

“You remembered.”

“I noticed.”

“Good.”

He placed the cigar on the table.

Then looked at Tetu.

“This isn’t a formal interview.”

Tetu blinked.

“It isn’t?”

“It is.”

Tetu laughed.

Kafu smiled.

“I just don’t like formal interviews.”

That relaxed him.

They began.

Kafu asked about university.

Tetu answered.

He asked about Tetu’s ambitions.

Tetu answered.

He asked what Tetu believed made a company successful.

Tetu thought.

“People.”

Kafu leaned back.

“Explain.”

“People make decisions.”

“And?”

“People make mistakes.”

“And?”

“People fix mistakes.”

Kafu smiled.

“Good.”

They continued.

Kafu challenged him.

Tetu disagreed.

Kafu pushed harder.

Tetu defended his position.

At one point, Tetu realized something.

He had forgotten to be nervous.

He was simply talking.

Thinking.

Learning.

Kafu noticed.

That was what he had wanted.

Not rehearsed answers.

Not a young man trying to sound intelligent.

He wanted to see how Tetu thought.

And Tetu gave him exactly that.

Eventually, Kafu leaned back.

“I enjoyed our conversation yesterday.”

Tetu smiled.

“I enjoyed it too.”

“You have an interesting mind.”

“Thank you.”

“Have you ever considered working in business?”

Tetu laughed.

“Every day.”

Kafu smiled.

“Why?”

“Because I need money.”

Kafu laughed.

“No.”

Tetu smiled.

“That’s also true.”

“But?”

Tetu looked at the photographs.

“I want to build something.”

Kafu became quiet.

“What?”

“I don’t know yet.”

“That’s okay.”

Tetu looked at him.

“Is it?”

“Yes.”

Kafu pointed towards the old photograph.

“When we started, we didn’t know exactly what we were building either.”

He smiled.

“We just knew we didn’t want to remain where we were.”

Tetu nodded.

The interview continued.

Questions.

Answers.

Silence.

Laughter.
