The bus looked like it had survived several wars and was still waiting for someone to apologise.
Its faded blue paint had surrendered years ago, leaving behind patches of rust that climbed the body like old scars. One headlamp was slightly higher than the other, giving the bus the permanent expression of a tired man who had heard the same story too many times.
It coughed when it started.
Not metaphorically.
It actually coughed.
The engine growled, rattled, paused, reconsidered its life choices, then roared awake in a cloud of black smoke.
A conductor hanging halfway out of the door shouted the destination as though announcing the final departure from earth.
“CITY! CITY! CITY!”
People ran towards it.
Tetu watched them and wondered what was wrong with humanity.
Then he ran too.
Because this was the cheapest bus.
And when you are a university student going home for the long holiday, the difference between a comfortable bus and an uncomfortable one is sometimes the difference between eating supper tonight and drinking water confidently while telling yourself you are not hungry.
The bus filled quickly.
Too quickly.
Passengers squeezed into seats that seemed designed for people who had never heard of personal space. Those who missed seats stood in the aisle, gripping thin metal bars fixed along the roof.
The bars rattled whenever the bus moved.
So did the passengers.
Every bump sent a small wave of humanity backwards and forwards.
Tetu watched one man grab the metal rail with both hands as the bus lurched out of the station.
For a moment, the man’s feet left the ground.
Tetu almost laughed.
How does someone willingly pay money to suffer like this?
Then he remembered he had paid the same fare.
He looked out the window.
Some judgments are best abandoned before they become autobiographies.
The bus pulled away.
And with it came the smells.
Sweat.
Petrol.
Perfume.
Roasted maize.
Mandazi.
Boiled eggs.
Someone had packed meat.
Someone else had packed bananas.
There was also a smell Tetu could not identify, and after three minutes of trying, he decided that some mysteries were better left unsolved.
The windows rattled.
The metal bars clanged.
Someone’s child cried.
Someone’s phone played music from the back.
The conductor shouted.
The driver honked.
The bus groaned its way towards the city.
It was going to be a long journey.
Tetu settled into his seat and accepted his fate.
He had one goal.
Get home.
Save money.
Survive the journey.
Then he saw her.
And suddenly, getting home didn’t seem quite so urgent.
She was sitting a few rows ahead.
Lala.
He did not know her name yet.
He only knew that she was beautiful.
Not loudly beautiful.
Not the kind of beauty that demanded the room stop and look.
Hers was quieter.
The kind you noticed once, looked away from, then found yourself looking back at before you had even decided to.
She had deep brown skin that seemed to hold the afternoon light, soft features, full lips and an effortless elegance that made the battered bus around her look even more exhausted.
White headphones covered her ears.
Her attention was somewhere inside her phone.
She was completely unaware that a young man three rows behind had suddenly forgotten the entire purpose of his journey.
Tetu looked away.
Then looked again.
He adjusted himself in his seat.
For reasons he could not explain, he suddenly became very conscious of how he was sitting.
He was well built.
That much he knew.
Kefi had made sure of it.
Back in the neighbourhood, the two of them had built a makeshift gym out of stones, metal scraps and the sort of confidence possessed only by young men who have never consulted an actual fitness professional.
They lifted stones.
They carried stones.
They compared stones.
There was one problem.
None of the stones weighed the same.
“Bro,” Kefi had once told him, “one day you will have more muscle on one side than the other.”
Tetu had laughed.
“Then I’ll train the other side.”
“With what?”
Tetu had looked at the stones.
Kefi had looked at the stones.
Neither had an answer.
So Tetu had become strong anyway.
Strong enough to carry water.
Strong enough to work.
Strong enough to survive.
But apparently not strong enough to stop his heart from behaving foolishly around a beautiful stranger.
The bus grew hotter.
Lala removed one headphone.
She looked uncomfortable.
Then he noticed the little fan in her hand.
She waved it gently across her face.
Once.
Twice.
Again.
The window beside her was shut.
Tetu saw his opportunity.
He leaned forward.
“Excuse me.”
She turned.
For half a second, their eyes met.
Tetu forgot the sentence he had prepared.
“Can I… help you open the window?”
She glanced at it.
Then at him.
“It’s stuck.”
Tetu smiled.
“I can try.”
He stood.
This was good.
This was confident.
This was going somewhere.
He grabbed the window.
Pulled.
Nothing.
He pulled harder.
Nothing.
He adjusted his grip.
Pulled again.
The window remained exactly where it was.
A few passengers looked over.
Tetu could feel his reputation leaving his body.
He gave the window one final pull.
Nothing.
Lala smiled.
“It’s really stuck.”
Tetu nodded as though he had conducted a thorough engineering assessment.
“Yes.”
He sat down.
“I can confirm that.”
She laughed.
It was small.
But he heard it.
And suddenly losing to a window didn’t feel entirely like losing.
The bus continued.
Minutes became hours.
The landscape slowly changed outside.
Buildings disappeared.
Then shops.
Then crowds.
The city loosened its grip.
But inside the bus, the heat remained.
And then something happened.
Lala’s phone went black.
She pressed the power button.
Nothing.
Again.
Nothing.
Tetu noticed.
He had been noticing everything.
The time.
The distance.
The stops.
The way she kept checking the dead phone.
He knew exactly how many hours were left before they reached their destination.
And for the first time in his life, Tetu found himself hoping the journey would take longer.
He didn’t want to say goodbye to someone whose name he didn’t even know.
So when the bus stopped for a toilet break, Tetu moved quickly.
Too quickly.
He climbed down, stretched his legs and hurried back before Lala returned.
He did not want to miss his chance.
He sat there pretending he had simply returned early.
She came back.
Sat down.
Looked at her dead phone.
Tetu smiled.
“Phone finished?”
She nodded.
“Completely.”
“That is unfortunate.”
She looked at him.
“Why?”
He leaned back.
“Because now you have no choice but to talk to people.”
She laughed.
“And you’re volunteering?”
“I believe in community service.”
That was the beginning.
Not fireworks.
Not music.
Just two strangers on the cheapest bus travelling the longest possible route home.
They talked.
Small things at first.
Campus.
Home.
The journey.
The ridiculous bus.
The people standing.
The heat.
The food smells.
Then bigger things.
Dreams.
Family.
Life.
The things they wanted.
The things they feared.
The strange little hopes people carry quietly because saying them aloud sometimes makes them feel too fragile.
Tetu listened.
Really listened.
He liked the way she spoke.
He liked the way she laughed before finishing some of her own sentences.
He liked how she occasionally looked out the window as though the passing landscape had something to tell her.
And somewhere between one conversation and the next, Tetu stopped counting the hours until home.
He started counting the hours he had left with her.
Then the bus climbed a hill.
The engine groaned.
The passengers swayed.
Someone complained that the driver was killing them.
Then…
BOOOOM.
The bus jerked.
Everyone went silent.
The driver slowed.
The conductor jumped down.
A few seconds later came the announcement nobody wanted.
“Tyre.”
The passengers sighed.
Everyone climbed out.
The road stretched ahead in two narrow lanes, almost empty beneath the afternoon sky.
On both sides, wheat fields rolled across the countryside, golden and heavy, their heads bending gently in the wind.
The harvest was close.
The sun had begun its slow descent.
For the first time all day, there was silence.
No rattling metal.
No conductor shouting.
No crying child.
No engine coughing.
Just wind.
Wheat.
Sunlight.
And Lala.
She stood beside the bus, her white headphones resting around her neck.
The afternoon light fell across her face.
Behind her, the wheat moved in waves.
For one suspended moment, Tetu forgot the bus.
Forgot the broken tyre.
Forgot the long road.
He simply looked at her.
There are moments that arrive quietly.
They do not announce themselves.
They do not ask permission.
They simply appear, stay for a few seconds, and leave you with the uncomfortable feeling that something important has just happened.
This was one of those moments.
Lala turned.
Caught him staring.
“You’re quiet.”
Tetu smiled.
“I was thinking.”
“About?”
He looked at the bus.
Then at the endless road.
Then back at her.
“I think this bus should take longer.”
She laughed.
“But you’ve been complaining about it the whole day.”
“I’ve reconsidered.”
“Why?”
Tetu looked towards the road.
Then at Lala.
“Because maybe…”
He smiled.
“…the long way home isn’t always a bad thing.”
The conductor shouted that the tyre was fixed.
Passengers began climbing back into the bus.
Lala picked up her headphones.
Tetu followed.
Neither of them knew it yet.
They had boarded that bus trying to save a few coins.
But somewhere along that long, uncomfortable road, between a stubborn window, a dead phone and a punctured tyre, they had stumbled into something neither of them had budgeted for.
A beginning.
