The sky lit up as Reika threw a blast of flame into the misty battlefield. Shadows screamed and disappeared as her fire scorched the rocky ground. Her heart racing she charged forward, her red armor glowing in the dim light of dawn. Behind her, the warriors of the Fire Clans were fighting the twisted, smoky creatures—servants of the Kage-no-Yami, the dark force that had come back to claim Hinokawa.
Reika dodged a shadow’s attack and countered with a quick flame that incinerated her opponent. But she didn’t have time to catch her breath. Another creature charged and she summoned the Vermilion Flame in a wild, sweeping arc that sent the creature flying. Her father’s voice echoed in her mind: “The flame within you is powerful, but it must be controlled.”
Control. The word was almost laughable as she fought for her life, every strike met with the never-ending advance of the shadow army. She couldn’t fail; Hinokawa depended on her. But deep down she doubted, and she could almost hear the other clans’ warriors—skeptical of her youth, inexperience, and strength.
Just as Reika was getting the upper hand a cold laugh cut through the din of battle. From the darkness emerged a figure, half shadow and half man, with a sword that sucked the light out of the air. It was Hikari, once the greatest warrior of her own Suzaku Clan before he betrayed them and fell into the Shadow Realm. Now his eyes glowed with dark power as he stepped forward, the shadows moving with him.
“Little Firelord,” he sneered, raising his dark sword. “Do you think your flames can match the shadows?”
With a battle cry Reika charged at Hikari, their blades met in a blaze of light and darkness. Her flames roared wildly against his dark magic, sparks flying everywhere. But Hikari was stronger than she thought, his strikes precise and brutal, pushing her back step by step.
As she fought she remembered her father—his warmth, his strength, his unshakeable belief that she was meant to lead the Suzaku Clan and the other Fire Clans. Summoning all her courage she took a deep breath, her flame burning brighter, hotter. She wouldn’t let her father’s legacy die in the darkness.
The battle turned as Reika found her groove, her flames burning hotter, her movements smooth. She threw a blast of fire that forced Hikari to block. She struck again and again until finally with one mighty push she broke his sword and sent him flying back, wrapped in her flames.
Reika stood victorious as the remaining shadows scattered, her armor scorched but her spirit blazing. The warriors around her looked at her with wide eyes, their doubts of her completely vanished. She was no longer the untested heir; she was the Firelord, protector of Hinokawa, the blazing hope against the rising darkness.
And perched at the Ember Shrine, her father Daichi, as the final shadows began to fall back, allowed a smile of pride to melt his hardened expression. His daughter's fire, their line, would continue to burn as relentlessly for generations of time.
And so it was, the Legend of the Fire Clans returns, from the torch that is Reika's unquenchable fire.
