Commander Emma Reyes floated effortlessly in the vast silence of space, her breathing steady inside her helmet. Outside her visor, the brilliant blue curve of Earth seemed almost close enough to touch. The distant hum of the spacecraft's systems was the only sound breaking the void.
It had been six months since she left home, bound for the International Space Station to oversee a new series of experiments. The mission had gone smoothly, until this final spacewalk - her last before returning to Earth. She had always dreamed of being among the stars, and now that dream was coming to an end.
As Emma adjusted the last panel on the satellite, she caught sight of something in her peripheral vision - a shimmering light, far in the distance. At first, she thought it was just a reflection or perhaps space debris catching the sunlight. But as she stared, the light grew brighter and closer. It was not debris.
Her heart quickened, but she kept her focus. She had trained for any number of emergencies, but this... this was different. The light approached, moving with an impossible grace, twisting and turning like a living entity. Emma felt a strange calm wash over her, as if the light itself was reaching out to her mind, soothing her thoughts.
She tried to radio the station, but her comms were filled with static. The light now surrounded her, its brilliance overwhelming. Yet, she felt no fear - only an overwhelming sense of peace. Time seemed to slow, and in the silence of the stars, she felt as if she was being called to something greater, something unknown.
And then, with a single blink, the light was gone. The vast emptiness of space returned. The Earth still turned below, oblivious to what had just occurred. Emma's radio crackled back to life.
"Commander Reyes, do you copy? We lost contact for a moment. Are you alright?"
She hesitated for a moment, her eyes still searching the darkness where the light had been. "I'm fine," she replied, her voice calm. "Everything's fine."
But as she made her way back to the spacecraft, Emma couldn't shake the feeling that she had just glimpsed a secret the universe had been keeping. Something far beyond human comprehension.
